Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

You know, being that I'm not a Reds fan I'm not usually 100% up on all of the younger players, but I will say you guys have the wrong manager for all these young kids I'm afraid. They need a manager who is good with younger players and can keep them going throughout a long season. Unfortunately Dusty Baker has never proven himself to be that guy.

I DO see the Reds having enough to stick in the race with Chicago and St. Louis (although St. Louis should be down by the end of the year). Houston sucks and will continue to suck (they are still waiting on Clemens to make a decision, not a good idea).

Milwaukee is a real wild card in the race too.

Now ask me again in May :p

Couldn't agree more...Bruce is ready now...He wasn't even challenged in the minors last season...He put up unreal numbers in leagues that hitters never put up, especially at his age...

Also curious as to who the Texas guy is that we drafted that is the 4th young pitcher we have behind Bailey, Cueto, and Maloney...

I believe he was talking about Volquez, the P acquired from the Rangers in the Hamilton deal.

Greg Vaughn didn't exactly come off the scrap heap. He had just just come off the best year of his career in San Diego (50 HR, .960 OPS, All-Star) when the Reds traded for him prior to the 1999 season.

My memory is slipping. Didn't we only get him on a one year deal? How'd that happen?

D'oh I am an idiot...I was thinking he was talking about someone we had in the minors...

Hopefully the minors have another big year this year, and another solid draft to continue to build up the talent level in the minors...

Now if only the Reds braintrust saw something so simple and clear. They finally build a team with some youth and hope for the future and turn around and hire the exact opposite type of manager needed for such a club. I ask again what exactly the fuck we did as fans to deserve this shit.

Reds fever, catch it. :ohwell:

They traded for Greg Vaughn. He was entering the last year of his contract and the Padres wanted to get something for him rather than letting him walk for nothing. He was with the Reds for one season and they let him walk because they were getting Griffey.

Being an optimist (a little out of character for me) maybe Dusty will suprise. Some coaches (Billick in Baltimore) are pigeonholed only to suprise. Hopefully the same thing happens in the Queen city in 2008 (the realist in me doubts it very much :()

I agree. I'm not an optimist by any means but I'm ready for baseball, so I'm buying. (i'll reserve my right to bitch about Dusty for a later date, if necessary...)

Blanton IMO would not be a good option for the Reds. He doesnt posses great stuff, which would probably lead to an increase in his ERA in GABP. If we were going to go after anybody from the A's it should have been Haren.

I wouldn't mind another proven, servicible, MLB avg arm. I would mind if they over paid for it.

This guy is another Arroyo(probably without the miracle first 6 months), think of it like that. Would I give up a single high level prospect for him? Maybe. Would I give up multiple lower grade prospects? Absolutely.

Blanton has value but its not like he's the missing piece to a WS contender. Pay accordingly.

I agree, you can win the NL Central with a good offense, Harang, and 4 league average starters. Blanton would be league average to slightly better. If you can get him without giving up the farm, then do it.
