Restoration, park on tap for Schott's former home

Wednesday, January 23, 2008 3:24 AM

Associated Press
CINCINNATI -- The 173-year-old farmhouse where former Cincinnati Reds owner Marge Schott once lived will be restored and the 50 acres around it will be turned into a park.

Green Township bought the house and the land from the Marge & Charles J. Schott Foundation in 2006 for $1.9 million. The bulk of Schott's nearly $124 million estate went to the foundation, which Schott created to honor her late husband.

Jeremy Affeldt, left, and Reds general manager Wayne Krivsky hope the left-hander can bring stability to what has been a shaky rotation.

CINCINNATI -- Jeremy Affeldt had his most significant big-league success as a reliever, but he gets the most excitement from being a starter. The Reds need help in both areas and are willing to be creative.
With spring training fast approaching, they called the left-hander recently and offered him a chance to compete for a spot in their rotation.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI -- New Reds manager Dusty Baker shook some hands, posed for a few pictures, then left town to do more of the same throughout the Ohio Valley. He has participated in at least a dozen winter caravans, and he seemed excited for one more.
"This is the official kickoff of baseball for me," he said yesterday morning, before leaving Cin- cinnati for southeast Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky.

I'm actually getting a little excited about the Reds this year. The pitching should be improved and hopefully youth will be served. With a decent rotation an improved bullpen, and most importantly playing in the Nat League Central, the Redlegs may keep this year interesting in all of Ohio instead of just Northeastern Ohio and Tribe fans.

I like what Hopper can do with his bunting, but hopefully Bruce can take the reins and run with it.

[sarcasm]
As long as Dunne and a slower Griffey don't clog the bases they may be alright.

Give em time, they'll cure you of it.

Yeah it's been a rough couple of years as a Reds fan (about 17 years to be honest :(, give or take a couple semi-competetive clubs)

With their division being so mediocre and the Reds farm system finally having some good talent the Reds can dip into, who knows, maybe they can catch lightning in a bottle (or more probably they'll drive me back to the bottle about early June)

I have lingering fears of Bruce, Bailey, Votto and any other high quality young players we have be shipped away to load up for a run this year.

Instead of building for the new GABP in 99 I got the feeling ownership thought another 99 style was right around the corner. Villone, Paris, Greg Vaughn and Pete Harnisch could get pulled off of the scrap heap every year.

Greg Vaughn didn't exactly come off the scrap heap. He had just just come off the best year of his career in San Diego (50 HR, .960 OPS, All-Star) when the Reds traded for him prior to the 1999 season.

I actually think Krivsky is smarter than that (unlike some past GMs). He had the chance to reportedly trade at least two of three of these guys for Bedard and resisted the Orioles demands.

With four prospect pitchers in the pipeline (Bailey, Cueto, Maloney, and the kid they got from Texas) now, if even half of them (two for those of you who need help with the higher math) actually live up to their press, that will be a real shot in the arm after the last several years.

I am not so worried about center field. Hopper did a good job and Ryan Freel can give you at least half a season before getting hurt if Bruce is not ready. I personally wonder if they are pushing Bruce to the bigs too soon.

Bruce' time is now. He's done everything he can in the minors its time to see if he can translate that to the bigs. Besides that fact the Reds need an infusion. New young talent can put a better face on the Reds organization that the fans surely need to see soon or they wont be around much longer. The youngsters are long on talent but short on experience so its a crap shoot this season. Hopefully Griff and Dunn make it most of the season without major injury and Edwin Encarnacion finally hears that "pop" we've been waiting for.

Couldn't agree more...Bruce is ready now...He wasn't even challenged in the minors last season...He put up unreal numbers in leagues that hitters never put up, especially at his age...

Also curious as to who the Texas guy is that we drafted that is the 4th young pitcher we have behind Bailey, Cueto, and Maloney...

Agreed- Bruce has been a top prospect long enough to be considered a MLB roster player. The minors are for developmental purposes- not for dominant players ready to go. Reminds me of the days when fans were anticipating when (Dunn and) Kearns were ready to go.
