Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

If that is or was his philosophy it doesnt make sense. Every team has players who are slow, especially power hitters. It is part of the game and something that you deal with. I would imagine Baker liked speed at the top of his lineup, rather than in the 3-4-5 spots. Dunn while not slow(think Casey) is below average when it comes to speed on the base paths, however more crippling than his lack of speed is his base running ability. His instincts stink and he doesnt know situations well.

Well let me say there is a reason Dusty Baker was available.....

You re-sign Dunn no matter what position he is playing at. I remember either last year or 2 yrs ago Dunn was tried at 1B in Spring Training and it didnt work out well. Contrary to popular belief, first base is not an easy position to play. While it might not seem like it, Dunn is a better LF than 1B(and we all know how horrible he is in LF).

Dunn is destined to be the DH for either the New York Yankees or the Anaheim Angels within 2 years. Until something drastic happens or Baker really falls in love with him, Dunn is as good as gone IMO.

:( As much as I hate to say it, he's a better fit in the AL as a DH... Sucks....

Wayne Krivsky's comment to The Cincinnati Enquirer that "It's tough to rely on young guys who have never been in the big leagues from the get-go" seems to indicate that the Reds general manager is still looking for a starting pitcher to add to the rotation now that talks for Baltimore's Erik Bedard apparently have fallen through.
Whether this means that the Reds might try to swing a deal with Cleveland for Cliff Lee or go after one of the remaining veterans on the free-agent market -- Bartolo Colon, Josh Fogg, Livan Hernandez, Jon Lieber, Brett Tomko, etc. -- is anyone's guess at this point. It probably depends on the cost.

In a review of a Bronson Arroyo concert at Bostonist.com, we discover that the Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher is apparently longing for a return to the Boston Red Sox.
With former Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein watching the concert from the wings, Arroyo changed the lyrics of a cover of Augustana's 2007 summer ballad Boston, and, according to the Web site, made a plea for his old job in Boston:
"I think I need to get back to Boston," Arroyo sang. The reviewer wrote, "We couldn't hear the next couple of lines because some of the women of the crowd were freaking out," but picked up the rest of the verse. "I need to get out of Cincinnati. I think I need the Olde Towne to fill my heart again."
The reviewer wrote that "there was a big 'awwwwwww' from many folks in the crowd ? "
The reaction in Cincinnati probably isn't quite so kind.

Sounds like Dusty himself talking.....

Yeah, no way to continue our amazing run of successful winning seasons if we decide to punt a year and let some talented young players take their lumps at the MLB level.

I'm much more comfortable with guys like Hatteberg, Keppinger, Freel and Hopper leading us into the playoffs again.

Luckily WK has hired a manager that sees it the same way and will pretty much guarantee the kids don't see the field as long as veteran still draws a breath. Dusty is like an NRA member with his vets, he'll stop writing them in the lineup when you take the pencil from his cold dead fingers.

I can't imagine how that could possibly be a bad thing.

Notes: Krivsky weighing options
General manager active in trying to find another pitcher
By Mark Sheldon / MLB.com

CINCINNATI -- As free-agent momentum has slowed to a crawl league wide this winter, the Reds could extend their search for a veteran starter beyond the offseason.
Trade activity could pick up during Spring Training camp, when teams will get a better idea of what they have -- and what they still might need.
"There's still a month until spring and then at Spring Training, we'll have our scouts out at games," Reds general manager Wayne Krivsky said on Friday. "Everyone will have a chance to evaluate players."
The Reds were able to add starter Bronson Arroyo for Wily Mo Pena in a March trade with the Red Sox two years ago. They made no trades last spring.
Krivsky hasn't given up hope about bringing in an additional starter before pitchers and catchers report to camp in Sarasota, Fla., on Feb. 16. Per usual policy, Krivsky would not divulge which pitchers Cincinnati is targeting.

Let's see here, he doesn't seem interested in pitching day games after night games, he apparently doesn't even want to be there and it isn't like he's Nolan Ryan or something.....

Bob Hunter commentary: Rumblings

I wonder what Boston would give up for him pitching-wise.....hmmmmmmmmmmm....

I think its more of a case where he was playing to his audience. If he was so bent out of shape about playing in Cincy he wouldn't have signed an extension.

The news on Jocketty hopefully can't be taken as anything but the death knell of Krivsky imo.

Maybe.....although the not enjoying having to pitch a day game after a night game is a valid thing or at least it was.....bad thing to have if you play for Cincy

now if only Peter Angelos could die and Cal could buy the O's.....

They signed FA lefty pitcher Jeremy Affedlt(sp?) for 1 year and 3M today.

He's cheap, under 30, left handed and used to pitching at Coors so GABP might not nuke him.

He's always sucked as a starter but had decent success in the pen. At that price who gives a fuck, lets see what he can do. If nothing else it shores up the pen some. Maybe they'll finally put Stanton out to pasture if Affedlt does well.
