Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

I don't know which is worse, the Reds' hitting against lefties or Bronson's singing in that JTM commercial. :sick1:

The RH options off the bench are worse than either of those two things (or pretty much anything else you can think of for that matter).

WK is going to have to fix that and soon.

Why the fuck can't we get guys in...I just don't understand it...We can get guys on, we have guys that can hit the ball, so law of averages IMO says that when we get that many on base we should get them in...I just don't get it...

We are getting outstanding pitching...There is no other word for our pitching and could almost be a 2 loss team right now, instead we can push runs across the board...

Besides Kepp and Griffey every single person reached base tonite...Either by hit or BB...Maybe it is timely hitting, maybe it is not enough extra base hits...I really don't konw, but we need something...This is kinda what I am thinking Dusty means when he talks about clogging the bases...Maybe instead of taking that walk, just go up there swinging and make something happen...Now don't do this everytime, but unless the pitcher has been throwing absolute crap, there is no reason if Dunn has guys on base he shouldn't go up there and just take a crack at the first pitch and see if he can do some damage...We need to find ways to get guys across the plate...The Brewers helped us the other night with the errors and then shotty pitching, but that was the only game where we showed we were capable, but we still left a lot of guys on base...

Well, it is only the second week in April, the law of averages have plenty of time to kick in. Dunn and EE are both under the Mendoza line, that won't last... I hope.

Holy shit, I just figured it out... Dusty is right... we're CLOGGING up the bases!!!

Yeah I don't think that those two are going to do that, but honestly it doesn't seem to matter...whoever comes up with guys on, just doesn't get the job done...also we aren't getting extra base hits, but when you get 7 hits, 2 errors from the other team and a couple walks you expect to score at least once or twice don't ya?

BTW Bruce hit another homer in AAA tonight...

Pirates 1, Reds 0: Bay's home run holds up

Saturday, April 12, 2008 3:02 AM

Associated Press

PITTSBURGH -- Jason Bay homered high and deep into the left-field bleachers last night, and thought it might have been the longest ball he has hit in PNC Park.
Estimated at 432 feet, the sixth-inning drive lifted the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 1-0, rain-soaked win over the Cincinnati Reds.
"I don't want to say it's irrelevant talking about distance and how far it went, but it's more important that we got the home run and we got the win," Bay said.

First rule of offense club is don't make an out, second rule of offense club is do some damage when you do hit.

The Reds are 4th in the NL in team OBP at a very healthy .347. That is outstanding and if nothing else changes I'm ok with this we will score runs because of it in the long run.

The Reds are 9th in the NL in SLG % at .397, which is Juan Castro range.

Its just that simple, we are not accumulating enough total bases offensively. To think all the baserunners are causing the problem by clogging it up is beyond dumb.

Now, its a small sample size of games and all but one theory as to why we are SLG so badly could be this focus on going up there hacking and that walks are somehow bad. You cannot consistently hit for power at the MLB level if you are not selective in what you swing at. Just a possible explination at this point but one worth keeping in mind as the season unfolds.

One crystal clear example of whats going on is a direct shot at the crappy left hander and I just want to make sure its out there. Mr "sabermetrics are for losers" Welsh is always going on and on about JR and Dunn laying something soft down the left side when other teams put the shift on and taking the gimmie hit. Well they have both been hitting more weak oppo field stuff this year so far and look where we are at and what the chief problem of the offense is. Griffey and Dunn bunting and or slapping oppo ground balls = win for the other team. You must have a couple of mashers in the middle and let them try to mash.

Stats don't win ballgames, no one ever said they did, but they give a manager invaluable feedback into what is going on so he can make decisons to win games. Dumbfucks like Welsh ignore them at their own peril.
