Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

I don't know that it will last but I'm trying to enjoy it while it does.

Lets go take a series from the Bucco's and go from there.
Reds bring Volquez, Arroyo, and Cueto against Maholm, Snell, and Gorzelanny. No reason they can't take 2 of 3.

These are three very hittable pitchers.

-Snell pitched very well against Cincy in his first start last year, was decent in his 2nd, and got bombed in his last two. 4 starts, 1-3 record, 24 IP, 31 H, 9 BB, 5.92 ERA.

-Maholm got beat up in his first two, but was much better in his second two (7 innings of 2-run ball in each of the last two). 4 stars, 0-2 record, 23 IP, 31 H, 8 BB, 5.48 ERA.

-Gorzelanny was hit pretty hard in both stars last season. 2 games, 1-1 record, 12 IP, 16 H, 4 BB, 6.75 ERA.

Here's hoping they tee-off on them!

Reds break loose, rough up Brewers

ASSOCIATED PRESS

MILWAUKEE -- Brandon Phillips couldn't help but laugh.
No, the situation wasn't funny after he had just given up two unearned runs with an ugly error when the ball rolled right through his legs, but he quickly redeemed himself.
"You saw me laughing," Phillips said. "That (doesn't) normally happen."
Phillips scored twice off two heady base-running plays, Adam Dunn and Corey Patterson each hit two-run homers and the Cincinnati Reds scored 10 straight runs in a 12-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers last night.

It'd be more convincing if EE had more than one facial expression: the blank, disinterested frowny stare.

One of the broadcasters (Chris Welsh?) took up for Edwin the other day with regard to his expressions. Said he was reminiscent of Reggie Sanders in that he doesn't show much on the outside, but he really internalizes his struggles (and successes). It's possible he has a way of having it eat him up on the inside while making it look like he's not trying or doesn't care on the outside. For what it's worth, this wasn't the first time I've heard somebody say this about him.

Even before we got a good look at how this team would take shape under Dusty Baker, I thought that he might really be able to help Edwin with this aspect of his approach. I still think that his impact on Edwin is going to be the best measure of how well his strengths translate to this franchise and possibly the best predictor of whether or not his tenure in Cincinnati is a success.

Warning....I am about to praise Dusty baker, if this sets off some type of cosmic cataclysim I apologize to humanity in advance.

From reading the article about Dusty giving EE the day off and EE's reaction I get the feeling that Dusty is exactly what the doctor ordered for EE. Light years away from the treatment he got from Moron and "3watt" Miley. All players slump, its how they handle it and come out of it that matters.

I disagree with his base clogging philosophy and some of his in game tactics but that is no big deal in the long run. Dusty appears to know how to handle his players and get the most out of them. Given some decent talent thats all you really need a MLB manager to do.

I really don't have a problem with his in-game tactics, well, other than that whole "letting the pitcher ruin a rally by batting in the 6th when you already know you're going to yank him after recording one out in the 7th" thing, but I've become numb to that maneuver after five years of Miley and Narron.

Yesterday the Reds actually attempted a suicide squeeze. Of course, it was with Hatteberg, a 38 year old guy who couldn't run a lick even in his prime and a pitcher at the dish, but at least we tried the suicide squeeze and attempted to steal a 2-1 victory.

Since Dusty took over, the Reds look like a real major league baseball team with pitchers, base running strategies, and everything! :tongue2:
