Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

Good luck to the Donkey, glad he got out. This franchise and a lot of its fans disn't deserve him.

Team Brenaman might gets it wish and have Norris Hopper and Ryan Freel manning two of the OF spots. That should produce enough scrapiness, bunts and dirty uniforms to get us to the World Series.

:roll1:
On the other hand, the glaring lack of power bats has suddenly made me forget about the problem with guys getting on base!

The Reds runs scored for the season might just actually wind up going backwards as the season goes on.

It's a sad day in my house. He was one of my favorite Reds ever, and he was my girlfriend's favorite player. I have tickets to a game in the Brewers series in September, and I don't think we'll be going now.
Well, if you're not going, I'll take those tickets off your hands.

That is a game I really want to attend, since that is also fan appreciation day at GABP.

Someone like Juan Encarnacion, Jose Guillen, Michael Tucker, Jeffery Hammonds off of the scrap heap will be found and the OF will be fine.

I'd like to see them get 45 HR, 100 RBI, 100 Runs and 100+ BB's off the scrap heap. That should be fun.

I'm also going to enjoy the explinations as to why we don't start winning as soon as you take Dunn's strikeouts out of the equation.

The Marty's and John Fay's got their wish, the guy with a low batting average and a lot of strikeouts is gone....let the winning begin.

I'd never known the Reds for the past decade to have trouble finding competent outfielders offensively. Especially when we have a hitter's park that especially inflates left hander's numbers.

Dunn's numbers aren't going to be matched. Irregardless of Dunn, we're not winning any time soon. This teams problems are so deep it really doesn't matter what happened to him. Sign him to a five year contract and this team still won't have a winning season.

Resigning Dunn and cosmetic free agent signings like Francisco Cordero aren't going to right the ship. We resign Dunn and move foward with the current strategy and Dunn would be 38 before this team was ready to contend.

Juan Encarnacion probably still wouldn't pass a physical with the eye injury.

Jose Guillen is looking at a 25 homer season for KC AND is making $12 million per doing it. Probably not an option....

Michael Tucker isn't playing baseball and Jeffery Hammonds couldn't make a Little League team right now.

I say you should get Phil Bradley

I'm not saying those guys specifically but the Reds have had a good track record of successful reclamation projects in the OF. GABP is what arguably the best hitters park in baseball? I think Dunn will end like Barry Zito and all the A's pitchers who get exposed when they don't have the largest foul territory to bail them out.

However this team isn't close to contending so it's not like one guy whether it's Adam Dunn, Johan Santana or Jeter even matters.

Then how do you explain the offensive blackhole in CF this year?

Thats not what the reds media has been saying. They have blamed Dunn, his K's and not running out to his position(among other things) for the losing for years now. Stands to reason if the guy responsible for the losing is gone the winning should start. I happen to agree with you, the whole damn team was(and still is) a mess and would lose despite Dunn. i know it will never happen but I'd like to see some integrity from a broadcaster or writer soon in the form of admitting they were wrong for piling on the guy the way they did for the time he was here.

regardless, its going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better because they just sent their best offensive player packing for a long shot TJ rehab project and some filler.

We started off of the year with Corey Patterson but Bruce has got CF taken care of now.

I think they where too hard on Adam Dunn but the media, fans and front office of this team are ostriches when it comes to the Reds. The Twins traded Johan and still are in the thick of a pennant race this season. The A's outside of this year compete and they traded plenty of big names. Ideally like the small market teams who win we replace a Dunn with a Bruce.

The only the Reds will ever win again is do what the Marlins/Indians/Twins/Rays have done blow everything up and build from within. Drop the payroll down some but putting money into overseas scouting/player acquisition like the Dominican Republic. Give Jose Rijo even more money for his baseball academy and start signing more guys. Make sure a Jeremy Sowers situation never happens again and draft picks get signed. Up the pay for managers/coachs in the minors so we have the best teachers.

Major player acquisition through free agency isn't likely to be a strategy for the Reds nor is praying we can put together a scrap heap time like Jim Bowden dreamed.

IMO..this trading of dunn leaves me to wonder why we have coco cordero still. obviously we are rebuilding now, so the need for a big name big salary closer doesn't seem to make sense. exspecially when he will be past his prime when the reds are supposedly built back up. so i say why not ship out cordero as well and have burton get healthy, and move bray and burton into the set up closer roles. for now.

Well, since I live here in Phoenix its going to be easy to be a Dbacks fan now. Screw the Reds! Stupid pieces of shit. The front office should be taken out back with George Bush and hung for treason!

I know Dunn was a 50/50 for resigning but to get the garbage we're getting from the Dbacks in return is freaking ludicrous! It wont be Byrnes, Reynolds, Hudson or Burke or Jackson. Its sure as hell wont be someone like Webb or Haren. Great deal for the Diamondbacks and the Reds are totally dismantled in an instant.

It wont be hard switching my allegiance to the home team now for sure. This is the last official straw for me. Hope everyone in Cincinnati is happy, they finally ran the big guy out of town. The funny thing is nobody is going to the games the rest of the year you can believe that. Castellini is definitely going to feel this one in his pocket. Maybe it'll hurt bad enough to shitcan that pisshead Baker and his son in law.

As I'm watching the presser now on the evening news, Josh Byrnes is laughing his ass off because they know they stole him. The big piece the Dbacks needed on their offense. They're already talking about resigning him and the 1st round draft pick if they cant. The epitome of polar opposites in baseball management.

Dunn is going to kick ass out here. BTW, Melvin is putting Dunn in Right field tomorrow night and batting him 4th. He will stay in the 4 hole, watch closely Dusty, and might possibly play some first base.

This move in conjunction to all the other shit they've pulled just doesn't add up.

-Like you said, why get Cordero to punt now or more specifically why not trade him at the deadline?
-Why hold on to guys like Weathers, Arroyo and Affeldt? They won't make it through waivers so you can't trade them now.
-If you are trying to let the FA's walk and get the draft picks why not do the same for Dunn? At this point I'd say the two high draft picks Dunn would have brought are worth more than the bag of balls we got in return.
-Why hold on to Arroyo or Harang at this point? This is total tear it down and rebuild from scratch mode, why do we need them? They'll be too old to help if/when the young talent finally emerges.

Which leads me to another point about our current front office. Friday is the deadline to sign the first round pick we drafted back in June. Not signing 1st rounders over money is something that absolutely killed this farm system before, if this regime does the same shit you can, in the words of the cowboy, kiss the baby -they'll never get us anywhere.

I know Castellini talks about winning and WJ has a track record with St Louis. I'm starting to get that old familiar feeling with this bunch. Hopefully the do something to change that, so far I have been completely unimpressed.
