Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

owings not placed on waivers. article on reds.com idk how to post it.

however i do have a question. given that owings has supposedly not been placed on waivers yet, does this mean he won't be one of the PTBNL's or does it just mean d-backs have just decided not to choose which players they want to send yet?

He could be a PTBNL if they wait until after the season to complete the deal when waivers aren't an issue. So, no use guessing until the PTBNL are named.

Assuming the comments about Dunn's contract demands are true I'm not sure how anyone could be upset we traded him

I think the debate has always centered around the return, not the fact we traded him.

Until we know for sure who the 2 PTBNLs are, its not worth trying to analyze.

Pirates 5, Reds 2
Fogg has another murky night

Cincinnati starter is touched up in four-run fourth-inning, as his ERA balloons to 7.95 this year.

PITTSBURGH ? Let's play Two Questions (20 takes too long).
One: Why is Josh Fogg still in the pitching rotation of the Cincinnati Reds when it is obvious that the season has been officially declared irretrievable?
Fogg has the same chance of being in the Reds rotation in 2009 as Hillary Clinton has of living in the White House next year.
Two: Why isn't Homer Bailey back in the rotation? Right now, his 0-6 record means nothing as far as where the Reds are headed this year and even if he finished 0-12 shouldn't he be wearing a Reds uniform to see if he'll be part of next year's rotation?

Continued........

Yeah but you gotta believe that we would not of done the deal if were weren't getting a solid return...They wouldn't just get rid of him...

I learned a long time ago to never underestimate the ability of this franchise to fuck things up.

We just don't know enough yet to say if the return is better than getting the two draft picks. It looks like the return is better at this point but until we know for sure its just a lot of talk.

If it was the case that everyone on a message board can see that 2 draft picks are better than the prospects we are going to pick up do you think that we would do the deal...

Most hated the Kearns/Lopez deal as well, but it looks like a win for us with Bray and Thompson...

WJ wants to build a winner as much as we want him to and he is not just reaching for straws...He is a guy that has proven he can build a winner, so why not have faith in the guy...

Because the foundation of Jocketty's success in St. Louis is at odds with the style of ball the manager of Cincinnati would like his club to play, and while St Louis was a successful franchise under Jocketty, he decimated their farm system and enjoyed the unusual (downright suspicious) good fortune of seeing player after player enjoy career ... uh ... careers in St Louis. That would suggest it probably wasn't all Jocketty. Tony LaRussa and Dave Duncan all by themselves must be worth 15-20 wins for their team. Just look at how ridiculously far this years' St Louis club has over-achieved.

My apprehension starts at the top. I don't know that having an owner who wants to win, win now, and pay money to do it is a good thing if that owner is as trigger happy as the Redskin's Dan Snyder. I think Krivsky was given just enough rope to hang himself, while Castellini simultaneously worked to tie his hands behind his back. I have the sneaking suspicion that WJ is going to learn this the hard way, once the chair has been kicked out from under him and his neck is snapped.

You can't rebuild and win now. Bob C doesn't seem to know this.

We will see how long Dusty is around...he was not Walt's guy...He decimated their farm system to make the major league team better...While that is not a great idea, if you are winning then you are fine...We have a solid foundation in the farm system right now, lets hope he continues that...I think that Terry Reynolds has a lot to do with the farm system as well and he is pretty good...

I don't see why you can't rebuild and have a win now attitude, just not the same year...Like next year, I think we could contend...

We aren't in total rebuilding mode, because the 2 guys we gave up Dunn and Griffey wouldn't be here next year, and we saved money...We will have a young team that is taking their lumps this year, and hopefully are ready to dish out some lumps next year...

A starting staff of Harang, Volquez, Cueto, Arroyo, Whoever wins the job will keep you in a lot of ball games...If we get Owings, or Homer finds his stuff, or Thompson, or Livingston, or Maloney, or whoever, then we have some barganining chips as well that we could trade and try and fill a hole at say SS or C...

I'm wondering if Owings is even coming as a SP. If he were on the roster now, he'd have the highest OPS on the team. Hell, he had a higher OPS than Dunn last year!

Jocketty did it once with Ankiel ...

FWIW, in Keith Law's ESPN chat today, he alluded to the fact that Micah Owings to Cinci was part of the deal, even saying that if he does not clear waivers now, Arizona will just put him out there again after the season.

again...its the Reds. Don't sell them short. This is the franchise that traded Frank Robinson for Milt Papas, it transcends generations and GM's.

We got a catcher Castillo, and I am kinda liking the idea of moving Owings to the outfield, if his bat hits as well as it seems he can...

Buck will make his first start in A+ tomorrow night, was suppossed to be tonight, but got rained out...

I like the trade, as Owings is hurt right now and can't be traded or clear waivers...Either way in a couple weeks or at the end of the season he will be a Red...

yesterday the reds signed LHP Matt Fairel of FSU. He was a 35th round pick who recieved a $250,000 signing bonus which they say is 4th round money. Many speculating that this is a tell tale sign Yonder won't sign and the Reds are now distributing the money they would use on him.

Just another reason to hate "the U"!
