Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

I had forgotten the Reds were playing a day game today. I turned on the radio just in time for the big inning. Yet another meaningless HR by Dunn, right?

The human victory cigar, Todd Coffey is in now. Let's see if he can hold a 5-run lead in the ninth. As I write this, he's allowed three hits and only recorded one out.

I wasn't sure about the pitch count at the time, but I thought when Dusty pulled Arroyo from the game after seven innings with a 9-3 lead that it was a bad move. Right now the Reds bullpen is thin, overused and lacking in confidence. It would have been nice to get them a rest and let Bronson try to take this one the distance.

Instead, we got the same old crap from the last two weeks. A perfect example of what was stated above - the Reds talent overcoming their stupidity was what allowed them to survive this one.

If you had asked me a week ago whether going 4-3 against the Mets and Padres would be a success, I would have said yes. It does not feel like one though, especially considering that the probably should have taken 6 of 7, with a complete sweep within reach.

Coffey has got to go. You can't even consider him to be providing depth. He's not even trusted (and rightfully so) to mop up in most cases. Burton being on the DL is a problem for this team, and Coffey being his placeholder only compounds it.

For whatever it is ... seven games in seven days, Dusty has mercilessly run Bray, Lincoln, Weathers and Cordero out there. The Reds had their closer in EVERY GAME of the home stand, all 7 games in a row, and only fucking go 4-3.

Dusty did everything in his power to not give Coffey a single fucking 1/3rd of an inning, but they finally hit the wall today. What does Coffey finally do on his return? Jack and shit.

Hope he didn't unpack when he got back to Cinci last week. I'd rather have Burton throw with his other fucking arm than see Coffey in there ever again.

Ridiculous.

This team should have gone 7-0, and instead they actually "lucked" their way into going 4-3. Every single player on the roster did all the little things fucking wrong to try and give away every game in this home stand, and they've held the lead or were tied going into the 9th in every single one of them. I can't even lay it all on Cordero, because the offense did a whole helluva lot this past week to NOT break open games and wreck the Mets and Padres bullpens in the first games of both series.

Crap. Losing Burton hurt. Not only did it cost the team games this week, it'll wind up coming back and biting them in the ass when the bullpen goes supernova in September.

Fucking bums should be 3 over .500 today and a legit threat in the WC hunt, not 3 under, and that's only considering the ineptitude of this week! Just think, we've got 2-1/2 more months of this!!!

FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK.

Fuck.

Right, he pulls rubber-armed Arroyo after 7, two days after sending Bailey out there for the 7th at nearly 100 pitches and one day after letting Cueto throw 120 pitches.

It just doesn't make sense.

Like Dryden states "Fucking bums should be 3 over .500 today"
I blame the injuries and Dusty Baker. Baker does some odd ball shit with the pitching staff.

I am with you guys and your feelings on this one...

Coffey gotta go...We need to bring Roenicke up...

I also agree that if someone tells me we go 4-3, split with NYM and take 2 of 3 from the Padres I would of been happy, but we had every god damn game and should of at least went 5-2 or 6-1...We stole a couple with late inning heroics of our own...

Either way we need to contiue to win series and we need 2 of 3 from Colorado...

14-9

On June 27, the Reds were 36-44 going into the Cleveland series. Since that time, they've gone 14-9 to run the record to 50-53. Three of those losses were the abominations just this past week, but to really feel the heartbreak you need to also throw in the 3-2 loss @Milwaukee immediately before the break, and the 6-5 11-inning loss against Pittsburgh back on July 1. Win those, and that swings their 14-9 record around to 19-4, which would be a 55-48 record -- 2 games back of St. Louis for the wild card. This whole run came right when it was looking like the bullpen was becoming the strength of the team. Of course, that doesn't tell the whole story, because the bullpen blowing those games (and spectacularly) isn't the only culprit. You can look at both of Homer Bailey's starts (good pitching performances, but NDs, and ultimately losses for the team) since the 13th and find at least one run in each that were his fault because he failed to hustle his ass to cover 1st, add in a throwing error by Edwin under pressure here, and one on Votto there ... and so on and so on with the defense and the base running ...

That's what I mean when I talk about the stupidity of the team as a team overcoming their talent (and rarely vice versa). On paper, this team is as good as any in the National League, even with their warts (the bench), the injuries, and the slumping production from Griffey and Harang. They just cannot get out of their own way. We've all seen glimpses of it this year too. When they're actually on, they're amazing and fun to watch. Too bad that only happens once out of every ten games.

I can't pin this season on Dusty. Maybe Krivsky, but he also built this team, and this team is good. As Jax has said, it's the culture of losing. Beyond that, it's the gross negligence of the entire organization, the scouts, the coaches, and all the managers and GMs (past and present) that these clowns still don't know how to fucking bunt or run from second to third. Really. It's been eight seasons of this shit. It directly costs the team 10 games (minimum) every year. Fucking fix it already.

A bright spot over this stretch has been Arroyo. Four of his last five starts:

Sun, Jun 29 @ Cleveland W 9-5 6.0 5 2 1 2 6 1
Fri, Jul 4 Washington W 3-0 6.0 5 0 0 3 3 0
Fri, Jul 18 NY Mets W 5-2 8.0 4 2 2 1 4 0
Wed, Jul 23 San Diego W 9-5 7.0 6 3 3 0 7 2

The one he butchered was his start against the Cubs on the 10th, though he still got the win thanks to the run support. He's really bounced back since his adventure in Toronto.
