Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

Whats wrong with Danny Herrera? I thought the kid was magic when he came up and instead they bring Coffey back up here?! Stupid unless Herrera is injured.

Anyone else notice that Dunn's defense directly correlates with his hitting? When hes grooving at the plate, such as now, his defense takes a huge jump up. I think his mental approach is terribly flawed. He goes bad in the box and his glove goes with it. Could be that he's so worried about making outs at the plate that his concentration wanes in the field? Maybe. As long as he's cranking at the plate like he is right now, I dont really care!

I am with you on Herrera...Maybe they don't want to waste another option this soon, and maybe they are looking to cut ties with Coffey after this stint in the majors, or looking to trade him for a bucket of balls and a bag of seeds?

I don't think Arroyo is going anywhere. Had Krivsky left well enough alone, the Reds would have had Arroyo for $3.95M this year thanks to the home-town discount he had given the Sox, and this would have been the last year of his deal. However, after Arroyo's career year in 2006, WK tripped all over himself to lock up Arroyo w/ a generous extension, and with the $2.5M signing bonus, the Reds are effectively paying $6.5M this year, and are on the hook for $9.5M in 2009, and $11M in 2010. (ESPN - Reds' Arroyo agrees to 2-year extension through 2010 - MLB)

Half the teams in the NL aren't even paying that much for their Ace. Face it, he's not getting traded, because if the Reds are going to be stuck with the tab either way (which they will) they might as well get what they paid for in Arroyo's services.

Arroyo eats a shit-ton of innings, can start on short rest, can pitch out of the pen, and would be waaaay above league average as a #4 or #5. I don't think he's a bad pitcher, just (now) grossly overpaid. I'm fine with him staying in Cinci, especially now that he will be in his proper spot in the rotation in 2009.

My bigger concerns are getting Harang straight and locking up Dunn.

This team is better than their record. The current group is worlds better than they were just back in April & May, and they've been (mostly) playing like it, at least when CoCo isn't blowing 2 & 3 run leads. The talent is there. I think the hole they dug in the first two months is too deep to overcome, and with the Mets, Phillies, Cubs, Cards, and Brewers all in the WC race, I'd go ahead and start planning for Opening Day 2009. Arroyo is probably part of the plan for 2009, unless somebody gets REALLY desperate.

Thus you need teams like the Mets and Yankees to try and be buyers in this case...

A couple other things to comment on...I trade Dunn in a heart beat if someone gives up something worth it in return...

We have some OF's that are going to be ready in the minors either next season or the year after...No reason to overpay for Dunn...Hairston and Freel will be able to handle a spot next year or we get a 1 year FA for next
year...

I love the young core we have right now, and I think that maybe a vetran or two in the off-season wouldn't be a bad thing...Maybe a vetran LF or a vertran C or SS...A guy that knows about winning...

Also if Dunn does leave we will get a couple extra draft picks I believe if he walks..

I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure that the option is a by-the-season thing, not based on the number of call-ups. He could be called up 13 times this season and it would still count as just one option used. That's how Belisle still magically had an option this year, despite how many times he was up and down over the last few years

I am thinking the only reason they called Coffey up is that they felt they needed a hard throwing righty in the pen in place of Burton

Joey! Tie ballgame.

I'm starting to think very seriously that Votto would make a decent Left fielder. Move Dunn either in trade or to first base and move Votto to the outfield. Dunn cant be any worse at first than Votto has been and Votto would probably be better in left.

You might be right but we need people in the pen who are going to get batters out regardless of how hard they throw. Coffey will have to be much improved for me to approve of this move.

Marcus McBeth is another guy that could of got a look along with Roenicke or herrara over Coffey...

As for Bphil he is playing amazing defense...

As for Votto to left, I don't do that for Dunn, but I would do it for a guy like Alonso in a couple years...

I agree, but it wont hurt Votto now to get some experience out there as he wont stay our 1B of the future I dont think. Might as well move them now and benefit. It wouldnt hurt Dunn's trade value either to be able to play 1st at well.

I'm fine with Coffey being up as long as he's essentially trying out for the new GM. I'm hoping Coffey has fixed some things and doesn't suck now, but if he does, I hope Jocketty will do what Krivsky wouldn't and send him packing.

Six innings of two-run baseball from Fogg? I think that officially puts this game into that category of games that the Reds need to find a way to pull out.

...And how 'bout that first double play by Phillips? That was one of the most difficult infield throws I've ever seen - spinning in the opposite direction of the throw. That was some amazing arm strength he displayed there.

Yeah but it isn't something you just do midseason...Dunn would need quite a bit of work to be able to handle 1B...
