Johnny Cueto struck out the first five batters he faced, but he was unable to hold a 5-2 lead.

CINCINNATI -- The Reds fought two-time Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana for four innings last night, then scratched and clawed against the New York Mets bullpen. There was no poetry in their game but admirable amounts of patience and power.
It will serve them well over time. But first they need to get their breath back.
For all the blows they landed last night, the Reds were floored by a gut shot in the ninth inning. Closer Francisco Cordero allowed six straight hits and four runs, including a two-run home run to David Wright, as the Mets overwhelmed the Reds 10-8 to start the unofficial second half of the season.
"That hurts big time because we played so hard, we fought," manager Dusty Baker said.

Tonight's game was fun. Phillips was awesome. Arroyo was QUALITY tonight. He got hit hard a couple times in the 4th, but other than that he was about as good as you could ask. The Reds will have a fine second half if Arroyo can pitch with that kind of efficiency and get into the seventh inning consistently (provided he's not traded).

That double play to end the game - that was one of the few plays I've seen from the Reds over the past few years that was not a routine play and was a "smart" baseball play. It just seems that's the kind of thing the Reds usually screw up or don't take full advantage of. Good job by Phillips to force the rundown instead of flipping the ball to SS, and nice job by Votto to remember to get the force play at first in the midst of the rundown.

The Reds had a nice crowd tonight. I guess all it takes is playing a decent opponent, warm weather, a Friday night, free fireworks, a free gift, and a ceremony featuring 3 HOFers to get people to the ballpark around here. I think they tried every promotion they had tonight except for dollar hot dogs. I was pleasantly surprised by the giveaway. It was a print depicting Junior, Morgan & Bench in honor of being selected as part of the all-time Gold Glove team. I was impressed that they bothered to give it away already in a frame instead of giving out a poster that would just get beat up carrying it around at the game. It has some sponsorship logos on it, but they're small enough that you hardly notice. It's the kind of thing I wouldn't mind displaying with a lot of my other memorabilia. Not bad for a freebie.

It was good to see the Reds bounce back from last night's game. That one was the kind of game that usually cripples the Reds for a good 2-4 weeks. Now, they're in a good position to get a split with the Mets and have a good homestand.

By the way, I wanted to make this a separate post so it didn't get lost for anyone who wanted to come back and find it. The Reds in April & May ran a promo with UDF for half price tickets (mostly upper deck and outfield). That had expired, but in the meantime I did find a coupon code for Reds.com that's good for half price tickets all season, except for premium games.

The code is: 78RTN0344. It is case sensitive.

You can find it on the Reds' website here:
Cincinnati USA Ticket Special | Reds.com: Tickets

The promo is apparently designed to promote tourism to Cincy and the Reds' games. I'm coming from Butler county, so I guess that makes me a tourist, right? Anyway, I used this tonight for some good seats. Enjoy.

Burton to the DL, Coffey up...

Not in anyway the news this team needed...

We need Hairston and Burton if we want to be successful...They are two of the most important players to this team the way that they have been playing...Lets hope they are short stints and they will come back ok...

I would of much rather of given Josh Roenicke a shot over Coffey, but lets hope that Coffey throws decent...

I would go with Bray more in late inning situations now with Burton down, like in the 8th inning...

Livingston is getting the promotion from Sarasota to Louisville as Maloney is going to the DL...

Also Carlos Fisher and Ben Jukich are getting the promotion to AAA...Two guys that could figure into the bullpen or maybe starting rotation next year...

If Arroyo's disaster in Toronto was a "come to Jesus" moment, it worked. Now, I really don't think the Reds should put him on the block-there are plenty of young arms in the minors-unless thye can get a legit leadoff hitter in exchange for him-I have Hairston on my fantasy team ,but I'm just riding the wave, and I think Reds management is thinking the same.

Really with Bailey and Thompson we are looking like a guy like Arroyo is expendable if we can get someone in return...

Also sell while he is hot and we have Fogg and bailey throwing well right now, so the season isn't really lost without Arroyo and we aren't going to win a World Series if we were lucky enough to slide into the playoffs with Arroyo, so to me sell why the return for him is high...

Much like Billy Beane just did with Joe Blanton...THe A's are still in the race, but he knew he could get some good return and they weren't ready to compete at the highest level with him...
