Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

You aren't going to be a legit WS caliber team with those two guys in CF and SS. As much as I like them both offensivly their range at two premium defensive positions is terrible. Also, Frazier probably won't be ready to help by '09.

I am not talking anything about World series next year...I just want to be competitive...Maybe win the division, make the playoffs...I agree Frazier is probably a midseason call up next year and doesn't start the season there...Cumberland, might be an option in CF as he is putting up really good numbers in AA, and is said to have a solid arm and solid speed in CF...

We need players who are both an offensive and defensive asset at 4 of our 8 regular fielders positions right now assuming Dunn's gone. Thats a big task that doesn't take into account any pitching or bench needs whatsoever.

If we can put Hairston on the bench and have a solid CF with defense, and can sign a one year guy to man LF that can put up solid numbers...I think we get solid production from Bruce, Votto, LF, EE, Phillips, Kepp to where we really don't need a huge amount of power...Defensively we would be pretty good, other than just a lack of overall ground the team can cover, but EE makes up some range in the hole between 3b and SS, and Bruce is above average in RF...

The more I think about it as this season goes on the bigger the task I see facing WJ. We are probably still a couple of years away unless he works some magic.

I think 2010 is the year we really compete for the WS...When Alonso, Frazier, Stubbs, Mes, and a couple other are ready to really make an impact...

Exactly why I'm in favor of moving some bigger names that people might not like to hear, like Harang, Cordero and Phillips. I'd add Arroyo to the list but he's near worthless and I assume that a no brainer.

Harang-Cordero-BP could bring you the motherload package of near MLB ready prospects to add to the core of Bruce/Volquez/Votto etc. That gives you a young and hopefully complete team that you can sprinkle some vets/role players into and have a CONSISTENT winning franchise for years to come.

Only problem is the trend in MLB seems to be going away from desperate contenders selling the farm for that one missing piece to a playoff push. I'd be prepared to move any or all 3 of those names if you did find someone who'd empty the farm.

Well at least as bad as we have done this year, we took 5 of 6 from the Indians :)
That got me through a lot of lean years back when I was a kid "Hey, at least we're better than the Indians!" but the recent ... uh ... millennium has just been brutal.

No reason a professional sports franchise with this proud a history should ever be this bad (well, other than the sports teams in Cleveland, of course).

The gut wrenching part is knowing how close this team is. The rotation and pen are good and suddenly the bats go to shit. And you just know that by the time they find 8 guys who can hit half the staff will be gone and we'll be back to running fucking Paul Wilsons and Eric Miltons out there hoping they just give up fewer homers than our 3-4-5 guys can hit.

Hell the way they have played this season has been a microcosim of this exact thing. They look like they have it put together one series, and then the nexr series it's like they replaced them with the local high school team.

I gonna do some of the game thread thing again tonight while I work on re-doing my music collection. I've been a little busy/disenchanted lately so it's the first time I've been able to muster an effort in a while. Hopefully Harang has a solid outing tonight and kicks off a monster second half. I think this team (as presently constituted) can still get to 80 wins by the end of the season if they get some quality results on this homestand. At the halfway point a few games ago they were on pace for 72-90.

Sanchez strikes out swinging.
McLouth strikes out swinging.
Bay strikes out swinging.

Hairston doubles to LF.
Keppinger singles to CF. Hairston to 3rd.
Dunn grounds into 3-6 fielder's choice. Hairston holds at 3rd.
Phillips pops out to SS.
Votto grounds out to 2B.

PIT - 0
CIN - 0
end 1st.

1st & 3rd, no outs. What a waste. Phillips killed that inning with his first-pitch hacking.

Doumit doubles off the top of the wall in RF.
Nady grounds out to Votto. Doumit to 3rd.
LaRoche sacrifice fly to LF. Doumit scores.
Mientkiewicz singles to RF.
Maholm strikes out looking.

PIT - 1
CIN - 0
mid 2nd.

I agree with Welsh. I wish Harang would put a pitch through the batter's box every now and then.

I know Dunn is heating up but why not Bruce in the 3 hole and Dunn 4th? The time we were streaking it was Hairston, Kepp and Bruce all batting together wreaking havoc on opposing pitchers. Bruce has a better chance of moving the guys over or in in that situation and then Dunn has to see good pitches to hit if Bruce walks. Dusty's a tool!

Encarnacion singles to CF.
Bruce pops out to 2B.
Ross strikes out swinging.
Harang lines out to pitcher.

PIT - 1
CIN - 0
end 2nd.

edit: I originally put in "Ross grounds into 6-4-3 double play" before he completed his at-bat, just to see whether my prognostication skills were tuned in tonight.
