Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

This is just sad. The Reds are getting their heads kicked in by emergency call-ups from AA, converted relievers and 4th outfielders.

I didn't end up going to last night's game because I had to go to work instead. So, I went to tonight's game. The Reds got taken behind the woodshed both nights, but at least I would have got the Griffey and Nuxhall swag had I gone yesterday.

That was the longest 2:16 game I've ever seen. Apparently it was taking way too long for Reds batters as well. Looper only needed 98 pitches to dispose of the Reds in nine innings of work. That's just under 11 pitches per inning. That's just over 3 pitches per plate appearance for the Reds. This is the second straight series where the Reds have faced a patchwork rotation being held together by string a duct tape, and they're refusing to make them labor. Just to put in perspective how little the Reds did to make Looper work, he only threw 17 more pitches than he would have if 27 Reds batters went up to the plate without bats and struck out looking on three straight pitches. I guess I should give Looper credit for pitching a helluva game - the best he has ever and probably will ever pitch, but this is also indicative of a poor approach on the part of Reds hitters.

Meanwhile, Cueto walked 8 batters - and none of them were Albert Pujols. I was out in the bleachers so I couldn't really tell if he wasn't attacking the hitters or was just wild tonight. It seems to me the only time he was really determined to throw a damn strike was that get ahead meatball he threw to Ankiel that started the bloodletting.

I hate the Cardinals. I swear on any given night they could take the waitstaff from a local Steak n Shake, put them in Cardinals uniforms, and they'd beat the Reds by four runs.

At least the weather was nice and I got some nice pictures at the ballpark.

Well, I figured this team would have a shot this year because they were in a limp dick division. The division has not been limp dick while this team has. I hang my hat on the bright future of of Volquez, Votto, Bruce, Cueto, and company. I hope Bailey starts showing some signs of life and the braintrust punts and moves the rest of the vets.

The franchise needs an organizational enema. I remember listening to them on the radio as a kid and it seemed every night you would hear Marty and Joe calling "This one belongs to the Reds." God what happened to them.

We need to bring in "new blood." Clean house and wave a white flag for this season.

While I think Griffey is one of the greats, he is not a winner. The teams he has been on has not won CONSISTENTLY. He has the numbers but not the rings. Send him to a contender and give him the opportunity to win a World Series. He deserves that because he has been through HELL with the Reds. Get rid of Dunn, Harang, Bronson, and Phillips for prospects. Dump the old turds (Mercker, Weathers, Coffey, etc) and bring up some young arms. Those guys suck. This team needs an overhaul and Dusty is not the guy to mold a young team. I have no answer for who to bring as a coach BUT Dusty is not the answer.

We have a decent core of players with Votto, Bruce, Cueto, Volquez, Encarcion, and Keppinger. We need to build on that before those guys get the some fucking disease that Dunn and others have.

Ok it is official, Dusty has to go...His fuckin' man love for Corey Patterson has fucked us tonight...

He is the one guy that gives a flying fuck on this team...He is in the dugout on the edge of his seat, and you know it has to suck watching Corey Patterson ground out to the second baseman on the first fucking pitch everytime up...

Your 1-2 hitters are hitting a combined 200 or something stupid like that...Our pticher had more hits than them 2 combined tonight...

I like Janish, but he is not a 2 hole hitter...He has come up twice tonight with chances to do some damage struck out the first time and drew a walk the second time...

Griff in the 3 hole is also killing this team...

Can't wait for Kepp and Hopper back, as that means that we have a solid bat at the top of the lineup in the 1 hole and Patterson is gone...Hopefully for good...

Any way you slice it...It was great while Bruce was hot, but we are still in the cellar and we ain't getting out anytime soon playing the type of ball we are against the teams that are coming up...

Glad Phillips got that hit but its was pure luck. Once again he's swinging from the time he gets in the box til he's out. He jogged out of the batters box as well and I screamed at him throught the tv. Its official, everyone on this team not named, Cueto, Bruce, Votto or Volquez is trying to quit on this team. No enthusiasm. No hustle, other than those other guys and Freels psychotic ass. There is a cancer festering in our dugout.

Why not bat Jay Bruce 4th and move Phillips down in the order a while? With the way Jr. is getting walked these days why not get Jay up there with a runner on nearly every time? Fuck it put Jr. 2nd and bat Jay 3rd. Do something, do anything.

Dusty's ass has to go! I almost broke my new tv already throwing stuff tonight when Arroyo got yanked for Affeldt in the 7th. The guy is mowing em down and saving our bullpen then Dusty pulls that shit?!?!?! Of course Affeldt is going to give up the tying homerun, that shit is just Karma. Unless Arroyo was hurt there is no excuse.

I cant mention the Patterson thing or I might have a stroke while I'm typing.

12 games back already. Disgusting. We have a weekend date with the Red Sox coming and the Cubs continue to pull away with that mediocre club they have. AAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!

I need a drink.

Apparently, Arroyo's forearm was cramping and he couldn't go back out there. I was pretty pissed until I read that this morning.

2 on with 1 out and you use Patterson as your pinch hitter?

Wasn't a pinch hitter. He was due up. 0-4, 6 pitches. Unreal.

OBP's for the lineup last night. Two lowest OBP guys batting 1-2.
1... .232
2... .300
3... .365
4... .318
5... .397
6... .326
7... .347
8... .365

I wouldn't mind Dusty pulling a Larussa and batting one of them 9th in the order. Especially if he's going to leave Bruce in the leadoff spot.

Sorry I missed all the fun the past couple of nights. I was on the road and made myself take a Reds sabbatical. Had a feeling after that first Cards game that the boys were getting ready to quit and looks like I was right.

People always say I'm nuts to want him gone because of the 30/30 stuff and good defense but I'd trade BP's ass in a new york minute for a fair return. I will say that when he's going good/bad or indifferent. His OBP is completely BA driven and when he loses the ability to hit his way on the man just can't take a walk. He and Pokey Reese will be fishing together sooner rather than later.

Given our managers insistance that he bat 4th just makes it worse. Even when BP is hot his complete lack of discipline at the plate hurts us from the point ov view that a good disciplined team can get a tough starter out of the game quicker by taking a lot of pitches per AB. BP rarely goes past 3 pitches in an AB regardless of outcome.

Dustys use of BP and others....what can I say? I'll use the same line for him that I did for Boone, Miley and Narron. I don't blame a moron for being a fucking moron. I blame the guy who hired him or continues to employ said moron.

So we are at that magic point in every season when its obvious this festering pile of shit for a team needs to be blown to the 4 winds save for a select young core of players. Now we will all debate it who and what we could get back to mold the team going forward all the while knowing they won't do shit.

This sad game will play out for a couple more season's and before you know it the window will have closed on the current young core of talent and they will be the ones we are talking about moving to hopefully build a winner in the distant future.

WJ has a chance to break that cycle but if he doesn't start doing something besides reorganizing the minor league system he's going to miss the chance. Probably not fair but I think he's going to get an even shorter rope than the last GM. I know he will from me, I am not one to sit back and take losing/mediocrity well at all. This shit needs to end.

Phillips, Arroyo lead Reds to win

CINCINNATI ? A day of rest is apparently what Brandon Phillips needed ? 24 hours of sitting and thinking and watching.
After watching his teammates get torched Wednesday by 10 runs, Phillips was back in the lineup Thursday, June 12, and provided the coup de grace to the St. Louis Cardinals.
His three-run triple that plopped near the right-field foul line in the seventh inning helped lift the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-2 victory and avoid a three-game sweep.
"The day off really helped me out," said Phillips. "I had a lot of energy today and felt a whole lot better. I didn't really do anything yesterday. Now I can go out and be myself and not try to do too much."
