- Losing games the other team tries to give away.
- Losing games that Harang starts (I know, they won tonight)
- Losing 60% of their games inside the division.
They won't suck me back in this year but this is how close they are for '09 imo.
#1 get a CF who can be a true leadoff hitter and above average glove man.
#2 get one more MLB caliber starting pitcher
#3 Sign Dunn to LTC, say goodbye to JR
#4 now it gets tricky, move BP to SS and let Kepp play 2B
Now you have:
CF glove man with >350 OBP
2B Kepp
RF Bruce
LF Dunn
1B Votto
3B EE
SS BP
C whoever
P Volquez/Harang/Cueto/x/Arroyo
If the glove man in CF is the type of leadoff hitter I envision those first 5 guys will flat work a pitcher to death. Bruce and Votto appear to be able to hit lefties quite well so if Dusty had a brain and could read stats/splits etc and maybe just put his best hitters in a spot to get more AB's. I know, its heady stuff.
2 things I know to be true
#1 they won't move BP over
#2 Dusty would sooner die than have 3 lefties in the middle of the lineup regardless of the fact they are his best hitters.
Since they won't move BP over you now have to acquire a SS who can hit and play above average defense or choose to be deficient defensivly at SS with Kepp. By not making thsi simple move you are essentially wasting Kepps value to the team.
Not sure who they could move to get a MLB quality starter and at this point I don't see that being Homer.
Not sure if the CF solution exists in house or not, the minor league guru's over at RZ seem to think he may.
WJ gets paid to figure out the how but to me the what, as in what they need, is that simple and that short of a list. One starter, a CF and a position switch.
