Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

Miami and Arizona are tied 3-3. Alonso's been walked 3 (2x intentionally) times. He also has a K and a run scored (0-1).

Bottom 9 Miami has a runner on 2nd with 0 outs. Alonso is double decking right now.

And to think Cantu was on this roster for pennies and we let him go. He'd look awful good right about now in a Reds uni. Instead of Andy Phillips playing the utility role we'd have Cantu in there getting some spot starts at 1st and 3rd, maybe more.

Cantu over Hatte didn't make sense to me then and makes even less sense now.

Schedule of the next 25 games(projected goal 15-10)
ATL x 1 W
@ PHI x 4 L L W L
@ FL x 4 W
STL x 3
BOS x 3
LAD x 3
@ NYY x 3
@ TOR x 3
@ Clev x 1

Goals should be 7IP 100 pitches
Game 1: Cueto 7IP 100 pitches 14.3 PPI
Game 2: Arroyo 4.1 IP 88 pitches 21.5 PPI
Game 3: Harang 6 IP 113 pitches 18.8 PPI
Game 4: Volquez 7 IP 113 pitches 16.1 PPI
Game 5: Bailey 6.1 IP 89 pitches 14.6 PPI
game 6: Cueto 6 IP 115 pitches 19.2 PPI

Perfect start to the series, playing Ike to their bullpen's Tina. That will pay dividends later in the series.

Part I liked the best was early, each time the Fish scored the Reds came back and scored the next half inning. Thats the type of thing it takes to win that they almost never used to do.

Patterson's chase for his own perfect game (0 for 27) is now up to 0 for 24. He is getting better, it took 4 pitches tonight to strike out iirc.

Keep it up and lets take it to them and their pen again tommorrow.

EDIT********
Schedule fixed.

3 out of 4 would be lovely. All 4 would be a thing unheard of!

Hope we get the good Bronson tomorrow.

And for God's sake can somebody please give Aaron Harang some freaking runs support?!

Feeling good about this series.

Nice win tonight. Hairston, Bruce & Griffey were all productive batting 1-2-3. Hold Griffey together with spit, duct tape & cortisone if you must, and don't move any of them from those spots until it stops working.

I've criticized putting Griffey in the #3 spot all season, but at this point it seems like he's getting on base there and Bruce and Hairston both respond in this lineup. If that's what it takes to keep those guys batting over .400 combined and keep the Reds winning, then freakin' do it.

Another decent outing from Majewski tonight. I'm starting to really root for the guy. I mean, he's sucked out loud for the better part of two years now, but he seems like a decent guy and probably doesn't deserve the crap he has to take from most fans. The Reds could really benefit from him being successful, and it's not as if he's a scumbag like Brett Myers or Sidney Ponson.

Through the games played 6/6/08.

Combines stats of our top 4 starters (Harang, Volquez, Cueto and Arroyo).

307.1 IP
134 ER
3.93 ERA
109 BB
302 K's

Even with Cueto and Arroyo being erratic so far I'll put that up against anyones top 4. The solid starting pitching and, yes this is a compliment, Dusty bakers excellent use of his pen has led to a snowball effect in which our bullpen has become rock solid.

We can tighten up the #5 spot and any bullpen issues in house. WJ needs to find a way to improve the CF and SS positions from outside because all of our in house solutions are nice role players but lack a combined ability to field and hit at the same time. Kepp, Freel, Hariston, Janish all have their uses but none of them are an everyday player that gives you a plus defender and a plus hitter in the same guy.

Go find a CF and SS who are both above average defenders(including great range), who can hit 1-2 with a .350 or better OBP and this team can contend right now.

The trick is filling those two roles from outside without killing the current team or over paying in prospects ad hurting the organizational depth of young talent.

The good news is that we haven't been just a piece or two away in years.

well the fish took pity on us and booted a couple of balls in the top of the 6th. Andy Phillips makes them pay with a bases loaded double and the Donkey scores from first!!

4-4 after 6, battle of the pens from here on out it seems.

Donkey!!!

The Fish had taken a 5-4 lead, until Dunn hits a solo shot in the top of the 8th. Still no outs.

I'd love to steal this one. I thought tonight's game was the only unfavorable pitching matchup they faced in this series, so it would be very good to come away from it with a win.
