Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

When I first started collecting baseball cards, I would get a pack, and throw away all non-Reds players. Now, I have about seven hundred cards of...

10. 1984, NICK ESASKY

Well, if it wasn't for that vertigo thing he may have had a heck of a career. He had his best year after he left for the Red Sox (traded for Benzinger). Then went to Atlanta and that vertigo thing came up.

I know the numbers didnt look bad for Bailey today and it was the errors that did him in, but, if he doesnt use the curve more he'll get shelled. Dont know why the velocity is down but 93 was the fastest I saw today and he threw only 2 curve balls in 5 innings. The changeup was decent but not spectacular. The fast balls he was throwing had pretty good location but almost zero movement. Thats not good. What have they done to him to improve his consistency that made him lose his explosiveness and movement? I hope it was just a planned outing today to throw mostly fastballs for location and not that he's lost his stuff.

The only other thing I can say is that Corey Patterson blows and I hope I never see him in a Reds uniform again! Put Bruce in center and leave him there until we get a bonafide replacement. Never let Patterson see the field again! I truly believe that he's part of the reason Bruce has slowed the past few days.

Up coming series with the fish is big. We have the pitching in our favor 3 out of 4 and need to come out of this 3-1. They are playing well enough to do it but the first two pitchers for FL are slop throwing lefties. :(

Friday: Cueto vs Andrew Miller advantage Reds
Sat: Arroyo vs Scott Olson advantage Fish
Sun: Harang vs Burke Badenhop big advantage Reds
Mon: Volquez vs ??? doesn't matter who, advantage Reds

Sorry, but I give tomorrow a push. 3-1 would be great. 2-2, ok. Anything less and hope fades again.

If Cueto gets back to working the outside corner and dropping that slider down and in, its all she wrote for the fish. It almost seems to me that he's challenging the batters more than he did in the first two outings. I'd like to see Ross or Javy catch him once and see if they can get him going in locations again. I know Bako has the experience with him, but it seems that when he's in trouble its coming over the plate too much with the fastball and they ding him. He's got crazy movement that when he paints or keeps the ball down, he's nearly unhittable. Getting ahead of the batter seems like a winner for him most times as well. He's due for a big game and I'm hoping tomorrow is it.

The pitching matchups I would say all favor us in this series...But there are 3 soft tossing lefties that hopefully we can touch up...

If we score runs this series like 5 or so a game I think we will take 3 of 4...

Gotta find ways to win on the road...

The Reds' 5th Rd. pick Clayton Shunick is about to take the mound for NC State. The game is on ESPN.

In addition, the Reds' top pick Yonder Alonso and the Miami Hurricanes will be on ESPN tonight at 7 PM. I might have to flip to that one between innings tonight.

Shunick looks sick...

He has a fastball, change, curve, and split...He has induced 2 double plays and his splitter is tough to pick up and has him 2 k's already...

Cueto just worked out of 5th inning, bases loaded jam to keep the lead at 8-3. The last pitch he threw was just plain filthy. It was great to see his enthusiasm to get out of it while simultaneously chastising himself for getting into it. He has all the stuff and is learning.

And to think Cantu was on this roster for pennies and we let him go. He'd look awful good right about now in a Reds uni. Instead of Andy Phillips playing the utility role we'd have Cantu in there getting some spot starts at 1st and 3rd, maybe more.

Good for Cueto today to get another W. Quality start through 6 innings with the 2HR being most of the damage against him. If he continues to fight he'll get more W's than L's for sure. Early on he definitely wasnt getting some borderline pitches that I'm hoping experience will gain him in the future.

Another Patterson sighting. Make the bad man stop!
