Patterson should have been bunting. At least make his out productive. He did manage to see as many pitches in this at-bat (5) as he had in his previous three at-bats combined.

Crappy camera work tonight by FSN.

Nice play by Votto to track down that foul pop. It wasn't pretty, but he got the job done.

Nice outing by Bray. He pitched well enough to get all three outs. He's struggled against lefties and did a good job vs. Utley & Howard, Dunn's error notwithstanding.

Good to see Dusty finally make a smart move tonight by bringing in Cordero to finish the 8th. He shows an understanding of high-leverage situations for a change.

Wow. Phillips stole second standing up on a pickoff move to first base. The Phils just pulled some serious Reds shit on that one.

...And this one belongs to the Reds!

Great game tonight by Votto and Volquez. Dusty Baker - not so much.

Volquez is having an epic season and should be the starter for the NL in the All-Star Game.

I know Jack Armstrong went like 12-0 and started the All-Star game in '90, but I'll be damned if I've ever seen a start like Volquez is having.

I just stole this from RZ, who stole it from Baseball Prospectus. Kinda puts Volquez's season into perspective:

It's difficult to overstate just how well Volquez has pitched thus far. He has yet to allow more than two runs or pitch less than five innings in a start, closing in on the modern record for such a streak of 14 straight, held by Mike Scott and Greg Maddux. He also has a remarkable 1.46 ERA, especially impressive given the bandbox the Reds call home; Volquez's park-adjusted ERA+ is 305, meaning his ERA has been 205 percent better than league average. That is the best mark in history for all starting pitchers who have thrown at least 60 innings in a season. Of starters who qualified for the ERA title, the highest ERA+ was posted by Pedro Martinez (191 percent better than league average), whose 1.74 ERA was produced at the height of the "steroids era" offensive explosion, in the DH league, and in a premier hitter's ballpark. Like Martinez, Volquez is a relatively slight Dominican right-hander, measuring 6'1" and 190 pounds, compared with 5'11" and 170 for Martinez.

FYI on the consecutive starts string noted above... tonight was Edinson's 12th such start in a row.

Armstrong actually started the '90 season 9-3, now that I looked it up.

The only comparison I can find that I recall was Clemens in 1986, when he started 14-0 with a 2.21 ERA.

Roger Clemens 1986 Game by Game Pitching Logs

From a pitching dominance perspective, I'm reminded of Kerry Wood in '98 before he blew out his arm. I was at his 20K game and I still get chills thinking about it. I've never felt that kind of electricity in a ball park before or since.

Great win tonight. This team is playing excellent baseball overall. You can't say enough about the pitching in the first 3 games of this series.

The Phils came in avg 10 runs a game at home or something sick like that. we have held them to 8 total runs in 27 innings. The pen still hasn't given up a run.

Also in the non statistical stuff, this team is picking each other up when someone does make a mistake instead of letting it be an excuse for failure. Dunns drop in LF would have imploded this team not that long ago.

I wonder if we can not pick up Jr's contract next year, then sign him to a smaller one and get him to be the big bopper off the bench for us? I could really dig a bench with Freel/Kepp/Hariston/Janish/JR and a big RH bat.

Now for the stuff that concerns me. Bakko is in full regression to the mean, that means with a pitcher and Patterson in the lineup we have 3 auto outs and Hariston might be remembering who he is as well. NOBODY has 5 guys so good that you can carry 4 out machines.

Speaking of Patterson, its almost criminal that Dusty insists on running his useless ass out there. Its not fair to the rest of the team to have to overcome that useless POS. I'd have to go look it up but I'm pretty sure his first 3 outs came on no more than 4 pitches. I'm also going to venture a guess he hasn't reached base safely in his last 20 or so MLB AB's.

I'm running out of words to describe my hatred for Dusty and his allegience to a guy that simply cannot hit MLB pitching and will not take a walk.

How this team improves at SS, CF and C from here to next year will determine how far we go imo. Those 3 spots are just killing us.
