Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

Agree on all points Jax.

If Roenicke comes in and does anything like he's been doing in AAA then we may have something. I think part of Baileys problem may be that he's gotten stale in the minors. He's past his window, of what we thought it would be, and he's not improving. The new look in the bigs is probably just what he needs. He'll be around Cueto and Volquez and get the experience at the level he needs. If he stays around a 3.50 for the first couple weeks he'll be fine. If he gets shelled more than once in his first few outings he may be done. Lets hope and pray for the first scenario.

Per RZ...

The Reds today placed Mercker on the DL and purchased the contract of Danny Herrera. He was the "throw-in" in the Hamilton-Volquez deal. He is 23, left-handed. His velocity tops out in the low-70s and his calling card is his screwball. Should be interesting to see him face Ryan Howard. :tongue2:

He's pretty much been lights out in Chattanooga and Louisville, and I'm glad to see a young reliever that didn't come from "The Trade" get a chance.

The Reds will have to make another move tonight to make room for him on the 40-man roster.

Daryl Thompson pitched 7 innings for Louisville last night, giving up 6 hits and 1 run, striking out 6 and taking a no-decision. In 14 AAA innings, he's given up just 10 hits, 2 walks, and 1 run with 12 strikeouts.

Throw-in shows he also can throw

Bats' 5-6 Herrera truly a short reliever, but he might not be long for Louisville

Danny Herrera is used to being the "short guy," so being the "other guy" in a major trade wasn't new.

The Louisville Bats reliever was the unknown factor the Cincinnati Reds acquired in their December trade with Texas. The Reds sent outfielder Josh Hamilton to the Rangers for starting pitcher Edinson Volquez and Herrera, a 5-foot-6 southpaw reliever.
Hamilton has thrived in Texas, leading all of major league baseball with 50 RBIs going into last night's action. Volquez (7-1) has been a runaway success for the Reds and leads the National League with a 1.33 ERA.
And Herrera?
"He was the other player," Bats manager Rick Sweet said. "Obviously, the main guy (Volquez) is doing great, but Herrera is doing great down here. He keeps moving up the ladder, and we may very well see him at the next level before the year is out."
Promoted from Double-A Chattanooga on April 24, Herrera had two saves and a 0.66 ERA going into last night's game at Indianapolis. He's quietly making a name for himself the same way he always has.
"It wasn't a big deal that I wasn't really mentioned in the trade," he said. "I was a minor league guy just thrown in the mix. I like being kind of behind the scenes to do my own thing."
It's always been that way. Herrera, 23, is the only Bats pitcher under 6 feet tall. The team lists him at 5-8, but he says he's really 5-6.
He almost always has been the shortest pitcher on his team. And usually he's been underestimated.
Herrera is from Odessa, Texas, and went to Permian High School of "Friday Night Lights" fame. When he arrived at the University of New Mexico, pitching coach Ryan Brewer told him he didn't think he had major league potential.
"At the time he was right," Herrera said. "I was an 18-year-old kid with not a lot of stuff. You don't see very many guys with not very much velocity and a small stature make it up there."
As a starter in his final year at New Mexico, Herrera led the team in nearly every major stat, including wins (10-0), ERA (2.24) and strikeouts (104), and was named a third-team All-American by Baseball America.
He said Brewer admitted he was wrong. Herrera credits his former pitching coach for helping him develop the array of pitches he has needed to be effective.
Herrera doesn't overpower hitters but throws several pitches well. Most relievers stick to a fastball and one or two offspeed pitches. Herrera throws what he calls "seven different kinds of smoke."
The best of them is his screwball that, as the name suggests, is quirky and uncommon and leaves most hitters flabbergasted. It also keeps them off-balance and makes his mid-80s fastball more effective.
"His stuff makes him unique," Bats pitching coach Ted Power said. "He knows how to use it against all hitters -- righties, lefties, singles hitters, power hitters. He knows how to mix it up.
"We're not afraid to put him in there at any time."
Most hitters aren't exactly scared to see him coming to the mound, but that's exactly how Herrera likes it.
"I hope they don't think much of me when I first face them," he said. "They know what kind of pitches I throw, but they don't know me. It gives me somewhat of an edge."
Herrera gave up just eight hits and two walks over 132/3 innings in his first 10 appearances with the Bats. It might be hard for him to keep a low profile much longer if he continues to stand tall on the mound.
"If I motivate any other small people to play ball on a higher level, then that's great," he said. "But I keep a simple frame of mind with a simple goal: to make it to the big leagues."

Homer is only 22 iirc. It is WAAAAYYYYY too early to even consider using the bust label or saying this is make or break time.

If he went to college he would be in this years draft or thereabouts. If he's 25+ and still can't stick above AAA then worry, untill then Cueto and Volquez are the exception not the rule.

Never said bust. I just don't know if he'll ever reach his potential if he doesnt at least stay up here a few months this time. IF he's drilled and gets demoted right away again, his psyche will probably not handle it very well. This is all conjecture at the moment and I'm hoping he pulls it together. I'm not looking for him to blow major league hitters away, just get them out more often than not. If he can do that and stay up here a little while at least he has a good chance of remaining here for a long time.

Ok, so whats up with Griff? What are we not hearing. Two mediocre righties in a row and Griff is sitting two nights. With Hamels going Thursday he looks to get that day off as well. So, he's only going to play one out of 4 vs. the Phils? Hmmmm. It sure as hell shouldnt be because Ryan Freel is lighting it up. Hopefully Griff is ok and will be ready to go again. Wether he's slightly slumping or not he's still a way better option than Freel.

Ah, I just found out why he's held out tonight- General Soreness? Please dont tell me they are really going to try and hold him out most of these road games trying to get him 600 at home. Geesh.

Crap. We needed this one tonight to have a decent chance at a split with the Phils here. Volquez goes tomorrow and gives us a good chance in that one but Bailey's up on Thursday against Cole "I eat the Reds for breakfast" Hamels.

I hope Freel is ok. He made an outstanding play in the 5th or 6th, cant remember, to end the inning and save a run. Pulled the hammy running out a grounder and it didnt look good at all.

Danny Herrera, welcome to the big leagues little fella! Wow is he small. Wow does he have some nasty looking pitches! We now have two legitimate lefties out of the bullpen in Bray and Herrera. We have Burton who also has looked good as well to set up Cordero. The staff looks better now than I can ever remember it, if Bailey steps up.

A first for me tonight- class shown by the Philadelphia fans. Junior got a standing ovation when he pinch hit and they actually booed Gordon for not throwing a hittable pitch?!?!? In Philly? Really? Wonders never cease.

Well Bruce only got one hit tonight guess its time to go back to the minors, fun while it lasted though.

Good to see Encarnacion hitting again. That would be great to get him back on track right about now.

Back on track tomorrow.

Game 2: Arroyo 4.1 IP 88 pitches 21.5 PPI
Game 3: Harang 6 IP 113 pitches 18.8 PPI

We've played well the last two nights but just night quite well enough to win. Lots of positives but this young team needs to learn how to win these type of games.

Gotta fight, scratch and claw to find a way to come home 4-4 on this road trip.

Didn't get to see the game tonight. Was busy first at work, and then hiding from possible tornadoes. Gotta score more runs to beat the Phils.

BP's first pitch hacking into a DP style of hitting really bit us in the ass tonight.

Its amazing the heat Dunn has gotten in this town and the free pass BP gets.
