Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

If not for Freel yesterday we don't win the game against the Braves because no one else on the team scores that run he scored...

Also he has cut two balls off in the gap tonight to lead to the out at home, and another to hold Jimmy Rollins to a single...

yeah he makes some bone head plays, but he is a solid player, and I have no problem with him in the 2 hole tonight...

  • Lidge (RHP) relieves Gordon.
Dunn strikes out swinging.
Encarnacion strikes out swinging.
Votto lines out sharply to 2B.

PHI - 5
CIN - 4
F/9

If you had told me the Phillies would only score 5 runs tonight, I would have said the Reds would have won. They really hit into some bad luck tonight.

Encouraging sign: The back end of the bullpen pitched scoreless baseball in a 1-run game on the road (in CBP, no less.) With Harang & Volquez going next, the Reds are still in good position for a split.

Schedule of the next 25 games(projected goal 15-10)
ATL x 1
W
@ PHI x 4 L
@ FL x 4
STL x 3
BOS x 3
@ NYY x 3
@ TOR x 3
PIT x 3
WSH x 1

Game 1: Cueto 7IP 100 pitches 14.3 PPI

Would have liked to have stolen that one but other than Arroyo a very good all around game by our guys.

If Majewski and Bray can throw well for us then I think that we will be in business....In terms of the pen...

Offense is coming around...

Starting pitching if we can get some good stuff out of Bailey which I believe we will, we will continue to win ball games...

I think the main thing to watch for now, is how we can play on the road...Along with the month of June...Very tough schedule for any team...

Honestly going into tonights game I thought we were up against it. BA has had back to back fantastic outings and he was due to struggle once. That lineup gives you no room for error and he didnt have his curve going early on. Still...

We had a chance to win that game. Jlb and I are totally on the same page with regards to Freel. I do not want him ahead of Bruce in the lineup unless its from the bottom of the order. Hairston and Bruce and doing great together lets leave it alone. Freel's wheels are needed but he needs to not be a table setter early on.

The bullpen has been very good for the most part lately as well. Bray has been lights out and so has Cordero. Maj scares the hell out of me and stormy is just that. I'd love to see Thompson/Maloney up soon if we can trade BA and Bailey gets his head together, then Belisle becomes the missing link in the bullpen. It could happen.

The bats are humming. We need to ride the wave as far as it will take us. Joey Votto got completely screwed tonight but he's tearing the cover off. Those hits will come and we'll light up the scoreboard as long as everyone else keeps hitting. Gotta get tomorrows win.

I was at the game last night, great weather for a ballgame, but yeah, the wind was definitely a factor. I was sitting right by the left field foul pole.

Was hoping to be in attendance for Griff's 600, of course on the radio on the way to the game I found out he was a scratch!!!!!!

Majewski and EE came up huge on that DP. I will be the first to say I was ready for a really bad inning once I saw Maj trotting onto the field. But he made the pitches needed even though the crowd was amped.

Bruce has made believers out of everyone. All of the Phillies fans around me couldn't stop talking about "the phenom" (I heard that term at least 10 times) the entire game.

Would have been nice to come away with the W but it was a great game, minus Arroyo.

I like the two leadoff hitter concept if both guys are capable of acting like a leadoff hitter. Freel will not work a count or take a walk. When he gets on base its because he's seeing the ball well and he gets a hit. I wouldn't mind using him as the #9 hitter and let the pitchers hit 8th but overall when JR is out I think last nights lineup is the best way to go.

Belisle could be the long reliever but the importance of that position is overrated. Burton has looked like a very solid set up man now for a while. Roenicke(sp?) is on his way up and Bray/Weathers/Majewski and company are all there for the front end of the pen.

CL Cordero
RP 1: Burton
RP 2: TBD
RP 3: TBD
RP 4-7: We have guys all over the place to fill these roles

We just need two guys beside Burton currently in the system to step up and be truely effective set up men or get two guys to fill those roles from outside.

I want to trade BA because of his contract and his possible value this year. Then hopefully we can fill both the #4 and #5 spots from within and at least one of the guys develop into an above average MLB pitcher with the other being no worse than average.

Those scenarios fall into place or WJ trades some prospects for proven MLBers to fill the above slots and our pitching is going to be solid as hell.

Bruce has provided and emotional lift and his completely on fire but the bigger picture Reds improvement has coincided with the Donkey's excellent play over the past month and a half.

He is a force to be reckoned with when he's going well and has some protection in the lineup (Votto). earlier this year I said let him go because I just wanted a change around the team, now that winning may be here a year or two earlier than we thought I think you have to try and sign him to a LTC. You just can't replace the offense he brings.
