Phillips' slam sets tone for Reds in win

Brandon Phillips connects on a grand slam in the first inning that gave the Reds the lead for good.


NEW YORK -- With do-it-all cleanup batter Brandon Phillips leading the way, the Cincinnati Reds are playing much better than a last-place team under interim manager Pete Mackanin.

Phillips hit a first-inning grand slam and drove in six runs last night, sending Aaron Harang and the Reds to an 8-4 win over the New York Mets.

NEW YORK -- Oliver Perez was back on the mound for the New York Mets, and for one afternoon at least, their offense showed signs of returning to form, too.
Jose Reyes homered, Perez won in his return from the disabled list and the Mets got another big hit from Lastings Milledge in a 5-2 victory yesterday over the Cincinnati Reds.

Games in Atlanta, Florida could set tone for season

NEW YORK - Pete Mackanin's job was never easy.
But it just got a lot harder. The Reds went into the All-Star break 5-1 under Mackanin. They had a little momentum on their side. There was talk of a looser clubhouse. Players said they were having fun again.
Losing three out of four to the New York Mets could put a crimp in all that good karma. The Reds closed the series at Shea Stadium with a 5-2 loss to the Mets before a crowd of 52,186.

ATLANTA -- Ken Griffey Jr. passed Frank Robinson for sixth place on the career home run list, and Cincinnati pitcher Bobby Livingston went 4 for 4 with an RBI in the Reds' 10-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves last night.

Griffey's 24th homer, a three-run shot into the right-field seats in Turner Field, came off Atlanta reliever Oscar Villarreal in the second inning and gave the Reds a 5-0 lead.
With 587 homers, Griffey moved 15 behind Texas' Sammy Sosa for fifth place. Griffey gave Cincinnati a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the first.

Bailey staying in Triple-A for now

ATLANTA - When the Reds sent Homer Bailey back to Triple-A Louisville, it was to keep him on his regular turn.
But general manager Wayne Krivsky made no promises about it being a one-start deal. Now, it's an open-ended deal.
Bailey struggled in his first start for the Bats on Wednesday. He allowed six runs on six hits in 31/3 innings. He fell to 6-2 with a 3.06 ERA.

Hamilton's injury of concern
Outfielder will wear cast until at least July 27

ATLANTA - Josh Hamilton's wrist injury seemed relatively minor when he first suffered it -- the Reds waited five days before putting him on the disabled list.
But it is beginning to sound serious.
Hamilton's sprained right wrist was examined Monday by hand specialist Dr. Andrew Markiewitz, who confirmed the original diagnosis of a sprain.

When the ball left Andruw Jones' bat, I admit I threw my hat to the other side of the room, believing it was gone.

Nonetheless, as hard as Stanton tried, the Reds hung on for the win 6-5. This now makes 3 out of 4 series won for Mr. Mackanin, with the Reds once again packing the brooms, just in case, for tomorrow's nooner. Bronson deserved the win, but even 7 shutout innings and a 6 run lead almost weren't enough.

Stanton isn't going anywhere. We are the only team that would have him coming out of a major league bullpen. Hell, the Braves don't even use a lefthander out of the pen. Get rid of him now!!

Reds 6, Braves 5: Arroyo sharp, then bullpen barely holds on

ATLANTA -- Bronson Arroyo finally was back on top of his game against the Atlanta Braves.
Arroyo shut out Atlanta for seven innings, Jeff Keppinger capitalized on a rare start by hitting a two-run double and the Cincinnati Reds held on to beat the Braves 6-5 last night.
"It felt nice to come out and feel good while putting up a lot of zeros," Arroyo said. "I hadn't done that in a long time."

The way the cameraman was following the ball, I thought for sure it was gone. This was the perfect opportunity to get Stanton an inning or two in front of a team that needs a lefty. Gotta figure Atlanta would have a least some interest in him if he was pitching well. Way to blow it, you fat bastard.

Even if we could manage to get rid of him, we'd still end up eating most of his contract next year. What a waste of money.

And it's no wonder Arroyo has appeared disinterested most of the season. When he pitches well, the bats disappear and the bullpen implodes...so why worry about it. Get the same result if he gets smoked out there. Nobody else gives a damn, why should he?

I see I'm not the only one that thought that ball was gone. Good thing they were in Altanta and not GABP (guess who's the "Launching Pad" now). I can't believe Mac just left Stanton out there. New manager, same team, a little better luck and attitude is about the only difference I see.

I've become convinced that the Reds are a dysfunctional family. I've studied family systems theory. Families are interesting. They tend to have certain "roles" which get fulfilled no matter who is around. If there is an overcontrolling mother and she dies, usually a daughter will just take over. Just like most familes have a "drunk uncle" or a "crazy aunt", the Reds have the "bad manager" the "underachieving bullpen." The organization needs some family therapy or maybe an enema, which is what should have taken place when Castellini bought the team. I don't think its going to happen now.

I can't figure out what is going on with Edwin. I mean, either the organization has essentially given up on him or they just have no clue how to best utilize his bat. I don't understand batting someone with a solid OBP and BARISP in the bottom of the lineup. Especially, when you bat Freel at the top who doesn't do either well. The only way was this is justifiable is if they are showcasing Freel for trade bait. We'll see. Listening to Pete Mac right now. His love affair with Norris Hopper has no limit. For that reason alone, I don't give him the permanent job.

Adam Dunn broke his mold of being the exact opposite of clutch, and stroked a 2-run mammoth shot into the right field bleachers, giving the Reds a 2-1 lead, with Harang pitching a gem. If Pete learned anything from last night, Harang stays in, and we just might steal this one....

EDIT: ughhh, sac fly and this one's tied up....Here comes Pete, and here comes Coutlangus. Looks like the Reds were doing just find without my commentary....
