Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

I have to disagree with the reason here. The injuries JR has sustained pretty much sidelined him, not the type and competitiveness of the teams he was on.

That was meaning, never being a Red. If he were to have been a Yankee this whole time and obviously avoided injury he'd be at 700 HR's at least.

I also feel that were Jr. on a perennial contender he would play the 5 or 6 more years to pass Bonds. Not in Cincy though.

Well, hell's bells. Glad I fell asleep in the 8th and didn't have to see that nonsense. I guess they have decided (or realized) that they have Weathers and a bunch of mop up guys. Narron has managed the last 2 games like games 6 and 7 of the WS with his team down 3-2. 1-5 on the West Coast is nothing new for this team, just wait until they have to play the Braves and Mets. Without looking it up, it seems they haven't had much success in Cleveland since interleague play began, so I have no expectations for this weekend, or for the rest of this season for that matter. I think the goal of this team is at best to try to break .500 and even that would be a miracle. Hopefully, the long overdue firing of Narron and fire sale aren't too far down the road. It sucks to give up in May, but this team just doesn't have the horses to put together a couple of sustained winning streaks, which is what it would take at this point to get back into it.

With this team fading faster than a pair of cheap jeans, I don't think there is any reason to rush Homer. I'd like to see him up at some point, but I think there are some other bullpen guys who need to get up first so they can start figuring out who is going to anchor this pen next year.. If Milty isn't back in the rotation, I'd also like to see them stick Saarloos there to audition some pen guys.

As for Griff, I think it depends on his health/mental state and not so much on the level of contention of the team as to whether he continues to play past his current contract. I don't think he would stick it out with the Yanks, he's a low key guy and the NY media and Steinbrenner would drive him mad. I think he'd be more apt to play it out somewhere like Atlanta (close to home), but I doubt he plays past next year. I think he wants to have some time to enjoy his kids before they are out of the house. It would be nice to see him stick around long enough to hit HR in a game with Trey (just like he did with his daddy).

Where the hell was that pitch?! Bullshit! Strike 3 all day.

We just find days to lose every night. Unbelievable.

Yeah but I don't even know if it would have mattered. Arroyo threw a hell of a game but that is much longer than he usually goes. As I recall, there have been many games where Narron left him in for the 7th and he got rocked. So to get 8 solid innings is great.

But even if we got the called strike three, we probably would have gotten a textbook ground ball that most teams would have turned into an inning ending double play. However, the Reds would have found a way to mess that up as well.

You just have to feel bad for Arroyo. He has pitched great this year but hasn't gotten the support or any lucky breaks. I love Harang but he has been hot and cold this year and he has a better record than Arroyo.

Another loss for the Reds
BY KEVIN KELLY | [email protected]

SAN DIEGO ? David Ross caught the change-up that beat the Reds on Wednesday, but even he wanted to see the pitch a second time.
A bases-loaded walk issued by Reds starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo in the bottom of the ninth inning handed the Padres a 3-2 victory before 23,856 fans at Petco Park.
?Watching it on replay, it could?ve been borderline high,? Ross said. ?It?s the little things that beat us tonight. It can?t come down to that last pitch.?
But that?s what happened.
A pair of singles started the decisive ninth inning and the Padres loaded the bases on catcher Josh Bard?s groundball to the mound. Arroyo fielded the ball and threw low to third baseman Ryan Freel, who was unable to secure the errant throw for a force out.

Hamilton trying not to sweat his slump
Reds rookie not in panic mode
BY KEVIN KELLY | [email protected]

SAN DIEGO - Josh Hamilton made a quick adjustment Monday after a hitless at-bat against Greg Maddux.
The Reds' rookie outfielder forced himself to not be so upset.
"I thought to myself, 'Hey, man, you're facing one of the best pitchers probably in the game in a long time. Just have fun. Whatever happens, happens,' " Hamilton said. "And you know, it was all smiles after that."

Thankfully WK locked up Harang and Arroyo before now, because the 2 of them are the majority of what this team actually has going in it's favor these days. They might not like those contracts as much now as they did when they signed them. Man, do we owe those 2....

Sobering thought is that Harang has been the beneficiary of some tremendous run support but has been getting hit fairly hard.

Arroyo has buzzards luck so far but is pitching waayy over his head, about the time he starts getting some run support he's going to start getting hit harder to get that ERA back up to the high 3's low 4's at best.

Lohse is a mental midget and needs to be traded while he's hot, he'll be too expensive next year anyway. Let someone else pay him and get the prospects while you can.

Belisle is young, cheap and has good stuff. hard to complain about him as a legit #4 or #5 starter.

Milty...ever seen old 'yeller? Its time.

No exaggeration, when the SP comes back to earth and someone gets hurt then it will start to get REALLY ugly in Redsland. 1982 here we come.

Ughh. I'm still trying to be optimistic that the luck will turn, and it will. The more I think about it though which way will the luck turn? We haven't had any significant injuries yet and we still suck. At which point will we be saying "Who the hell is that in Right Field?"

Exactly. We've had a remarkable number of things go right so far and look where we are at.

If someone told you in ST that Hamilton, Dunn and JR would all be OPSing 900+, that BP wouldn't have some horrible regression and the SP would be doing what its been doing you'd have been pretty excited I would think. I know I would have been.

These guys have found ways to fuck this up before the normal ups and downs of a season take their toll. No bullshit, we're staring a 100 loss season in the face and those are hard to do.

I almost typed the something similar yesterday afternoon. If you would have told me that those guys would hit that well (not to mention Gonzo's hot streak) and the starting pitchers (Milty included) would pitch the way they have this year, I would have thought this team would be a couple of games over .500 and right in the thick of it. I know it is easy to blame Narron, but I think Daughtery's column really hit the nail on the head. Narron may be an alright manager, but not for this team. To hear the way guys like Bronson and Hatte talk the last couple of days, it sounds like the team had kind of resigned itself to losing. I know that last pitch the other night was borderline, but if you are Narron you have to get out there and show this team some fire. His reactions in the dugout are always that same sourpuss face when something goes wrong. Maybe he comes out and has a "chat" with the ump. Simply, this team will continue to be a rudderless ship with Narron as the skipper.

Is the guy on the right available?

I hear he gives a pretty good speech in the shower and isn't afraid to cut the "scrappy" vets when the time comes.

-Well after Jerry's littel mandatory infield practice they come out and play even worse than usual as hard to believe as that is.

-Lohse has officially remembered who he is, glad we spent money on him. Another strike out for WK.

-Gonzalez and his glove are quickly heading to the bad move column for WK as well. Now leads the team in errors IIRC.

-Bob C came out today and gave WK and JN the vote of confidence. Question is now is he a liar or an idiot?

-The SP regression is starting, the pen is still garbage, the defense as bad as ever...we're going to flirt with 100 losses.
