Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

OK, Reds guys... question for ya.

I've got Hamilton on my fantasy team and the problem I'm having with him is not knowing for sure if he's gonna play. He's played every game this past week, even against lefties, so it looks like Narron wants to have him be an everyday guy. Yes? Can I simply put him in my line-up and forget about him? Cause that's what I wanna do, but I'm never sure he's gonna play again. Take today, for example, I'm sitting him against the Pirates because I figure he's played every game this week and is due for a day off. And, it pisses me off, cause if he starts, he might as well go Yard twice and score 3 runs...

So, anyway... any of you guys that keeps up to speed on the Reds a lot more than I do... any ideas what the plan is with JH? Thanks in advance.
From the looks of it, Hamilton will play everyday. He will spell Dunn in LF or Griffey in RF when either needs a break or is out with illness (both have occurred already this month), or he will play CF in lieu of Freel if both are in the lineup. Freel, I think, is back to his utility role. Hamilton has got the bat, a cannon for an arm, and speed on the bases. He's already proven that he is the best non-pitcher on the roster. IMHO, he's done platooning/sitting for any extended period.

Agree 100%.

If Hamilton sits its just for the occasional day off but at his age and needing the AB's I'd guess those will be few and far between. Everyday CF/RF for the next 140 some odd games imo.

Yes, lets not forget in our applause of DFA'ing Cormier that WK shipped a prospect, had to extend the contract a year to get a guy who obviously has very little value to anyone else in MLB.

Kudos for doing the right thing now, but its just cleaning up a mess of his own creation.

I am still very leery of WK's abilities but he is active, I'll give him that.
Grande mentioned during the broadcast last night that there was speculation that the Cards were working on a trade for Cormier, so the Reds move was also to block since both were in contention at the time of the trade.

Reds fans have known for far too long, and the Yankees are reproving, that it doesn't really matter how many sluggers you have or what the starters can do if your bullpen is crap. I don't fault WK for stockpiling all the bullpen arms that are on the market and sifting through to find eight decent ones.

Also, while I partly agree with your suggestions that the team needs to stop chasing pennants every year and needs to refocus on building a foundation for sustained success, I have to concede that the team doesn't exist in a vacuum. Nobody is going to buy tickets to see a 100 game loser. WK has to put butts in the seat, so it helps if the team actually appears to attempt to be competitive. He inherited a mess and nobody knows how much control he really has right now. At least he's not shopping Sean Casey for Dave Williams or trading seventeen Boone's and Mike Cameron for Griffey, so he's a step up from all previous regimes in this decade. It appears to me he's balancing a complete overhaul while also keeping the team at around .500 to maintain fan interest, and that's not that easy to do.

Grande's speculation is 100% correct, the Cards got involved and jacked the price up on frenchie. It was known at the time but WK didn't have to say yes. Bowdens M.O was dumpster dive untill the kids arrive and I see a lot of that with WK. Not a big fan of it personally.

I agree with you on the need to fill seats. Thats why I said the rebuild would have only worked when WK and company first took over. They could have done a big PR blitz, blamed it all on the previous regime and assured everyone it was the only way to build a long term winner. I think people would have been ok with it then. As soon as they extended Arroyo and Harang, that window shut forever. They must now build a winner in the next 3-5 years at the longest.

At this point WK has improved the depth and youth of the organizations relief corp. There still isn't any overwhelming talent, but deep and young is the best you can be if you can't be good, deep and young. Sure as fuck better than old and thin.

Also, I agree that WK inherited a franchise who essentially had shut down minor league operations for a decade or so. It will take a long time to recover from that.

All in all I think he's just o.k. at best right now but he does some good stuff here and there. He is better than Bowden and Dan O but The Trade and extending Narron still make me doubt his judgement.

Former Red, current Cardinal, Josh hancock was killed in a car accident this morning. :(

Terrible news, I was just ripping on him a few pages back too. :!

No doubt sad news, but when my dad told me about this a few minutes ago, he accidentally said 'Josh Hamilton' first. Needless to say, I freaked out..what a terrible twist to his incredible story that would have been.

I just read the ESPN article, and they said Hancock's vehicle 'struck a truck that was assisting a disabled vehicle.' Hopefully he wasn't intoxicated. Regardless, RIP Josh Hancock.

Well shit, not what I wanted the first thing I read on my birthday to be.:(

I hate when this kind of thing happens. We make our sports heroes out to be invincible and find out all too often that they are more than mortal but mortally flawed, just like the rest of us. I'm not saying that Hancock was a super ball player or everybody's hero, but being a ballplayer kind of elevates him to that status by association. Times are pretty shitty around the world right now and most of us could use something to cling to like sports heroes. Thats probably the biggest reason people hate Barry Bonds right now because he was placed so high on that pedestal that his fall from grace not only hurt us but embarassed us because we put him there. Him being an ass on top of it is just a slap in the face really.

RIP Josh Hancock. May you find your heroes in heaven.

What a bummer.

Some have overreacted. Of course, he has had some fat pitches to hit the last 2 days. That always helps.

Said all off season the offense would ga as EE and Dunn went. We have to have both healthy and productive.

Only one I heard say anything about sending EE down was Marty and we all know he's a fucking idiot.

Considering Harang hasnt had his best stuff today we'll definitely take this kind of hitting. Its a damn shame though that the Reds basically wasted Gonzalez blazing start to the season. If the other bats would have just been average this month we would definitely be over .500.

What kind of bullpen help do we have on the horizon? Salmon coming up is going to definitely be a help over Cormier. Who's next? We have Eddie back maybe in a month so where is Bray in his timetable, June? July?

Can we keep it together until then is the question.

I understand letting Belisle get his 1st career CG last night, but there was no reason for Harang to be out there in the 9th with a 5 run lead. Narron has no clue how to handle a pitching staff. Utterly clueless.

He was at 107 pitches and had a 5 run lead. Narron let him try to finish the game and as soon as he labored with the first hitter he went to the pen.

I have no issue whatsoever with this one.

The RH bats are coming around, the dp combo is getting smoother and the starters are still going strong. Lots of positives to take from this series.

I didnt think that HR in the 9th was a bad pitch. The guy just went down and got it. That will happen once in a while. Overall I would have liked to see Harang come out for the 9th though just to prevent any freak thing happening to him.
