I thought they had already done this...

I agree it is a great move if he can come back strong from his surgery and if not we didnt waste much money...

He could be one of those guys that you look to aquire at the trade deadline, but we will already have ours if he pans out as he will be coming off the dl mid season hopefully...

no, and there was actually some talk of not being able to resign him. some of these other teams are willing to step in and pay a guy a big 2 year contract in a hurt year for the potential payoff in the second year (ala Chris Carpenter with the Cards). I am just glad to see him wanting to play for us.

Good find CB. People tend to take note when Marty says something. Maybe this is his attempt to motivate AD. I agree we missed the bus on trading him. I recall an offer from the A's for a big prospect package at the 05 deadline. At any time he could stand up and prove to be the monster masher we've all hoped for, but what he's doing right now isn't enough. Hopefully the new hitting instructor will help.

Just for the record Dunn led the Reds in BB, Runs Scored and Total Bases to go along with the HR's and RBI's. I'm not going to rehash the argument about K's and their impact on run production. There are many threads/discussions of it all over the web if anyone cares to look it up.

Bottom line to me is the the past few years Dunn is our best offensive player and Marty is just an old, miserible, bitter man who can't see the forest for the trees.

Great thread on this over at Redzone by the way.

So you are CONTENT with his production?

I am content in the knowledge that he is among the top 5-10 offensive players in the NL. I don't walk around like Marty saying stupid shit like he should hit 50 HR's and drive in 130 every year.

To be clear, I put very little stock in Batting Average as an indicator of offensive prowress, I prefer OPS. I also don't go crazy over Strikeout's, I look at a players Runs Created to tell me how valuable he is, or isn't, to his team. Value Over Replacement(VORP) is also a great indicator.

I started to really get more enjoyment out of baseball when I started to look into sabermetrics and discovered how the traditional triple crown stats(BA, HR, RBI) we have all been indoctrinated with since tee-ball just don't tell much of the story.

If you put the prejudices against K's and BA aside, instead look at OBP% and SLG% which together give you OPS, then you get a completely different picture of Adam Dunn. He's not Pujols and he's never going to be. I would trade him or any Red breathing for more pitching, that said he certainly isn't the waste of space Marty, or many casual fans, makes him out to be.

Ok, first off, throwing out the VORP thing is not going to impress anyone. We all read the article on ESpIN a few days ago. And, let's face it, what really is his VORP. If we commited 10 mill to any other OF, what kind of production should we expect? Maybe fewer HR and Walks, but you'd expect more RBI and a better BA. Likely better D.

Second, I have never said he is a waste of space. He continues to be my favorite player. Only that he has some obvious improvements that would benefit him and the team greatly. I don't beleive he should hit 50 and 130 ever year, but I do think he should be close. You can't tell me he doesn't have the ability. I also don't believe a .234 ba for a season is something that can't be improved on. I appreciate his Walk totals. And he gets them without as many intentional walks as Bonds and Pujols gets. But that is only one piece to the picture.

IMO he is just not a guy that really strikes fear into opposing pitchers, b/c they know if they can make some decent pitches they can get him out...

If he would be able to widen his zone with not so long of a swing he would become a deadly hitter IMO...

Right now he is our best offensive weapon, but could become even better...

Chill. I don't read anything from ESPN so if they did something on VORP I'm sure it wasn't a god article. The great thing is you can go look online and find a lot of places that will explain it clearly along with many of the other stats the Saber types use. Again, I just bring it up because I came across it a few years back and it really enhanced my enjoyment of the game. Maybe it will for others, maybe it won't.

As far as Dunn goes, obviously we all feel he can do better or would at least like to see him do better but when you look at what he does I don't feel it warrants the contstant wailing and nashing of teeth from Marty and company.

Agree 100%, he has a hole in his swing the size of Charlie Weiss's ass. Last sentance says it all for me. Good post.
