Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

As far as Dunn goes, obviously we all feel he can do better or would at least like to see him do better but when you look at what he does I don't feel it warrants the contstant wailing and nashing of teeth from Marty and company.

Really, we just travel a different path to get to the same conclusion.

Krivsky just locked Arroyo up for a 2 year extension for a pretty damn good deal money wise!!

That means we have Harang and Arroyo under control through 2011, if Homer pans out thats a decent 1-2-3 in the forseeable future.

Fuck me running, a ray of hope in Redsland. I was beginning to wonder if we'd ever see it again(still a lot of work to do and a lot that has to go right but its legit hope none the less).

Harang's was the longest contract that any Reds pitcher has signed since Mario Soto. They signed these guys at Jeff Suppan/Ted Lilly type money. I'd much rather have this pair than Suppan and Lilly. If Bailey lives up to the hype, all the Reds really need is a closer. Hardly anybody has a stellar 4th or 5th starter. I saw that the Reds are checking out Dustin Hermanson. He could be a solution in the bull pen if his back is healthy.

CINCINNATI (AP) ? Right-hander Bronson Arroyo and the Cincinnati Reds agreed Thursday to a $25 million, two-year contract extension through 2010.

WOW! Finally the Reds appear to be getting the idea! Now I think we may only be one big hitter away from making some real noise in the very near future. Who knows, maybe Votto or Bruce will break in and become that surprise stick in the middle of the order and Dunn will "see the light" and away we go! Just please stay healthy!!!!

To have a very good team:
-Baily, Bruce and Votto all have to make it big soon.
-Dunn has to maintain/improve but we know what we have with him imo.
-EE needs to become the stud I think he will be.

You then have thunder at all 4 corners which allows for a defensive minded c/ss/2b/cf setup. You also have a legit 1-2-3 starting rotation assuming Arroyo doesn't remeber who he was his whole career before getting off the plane in Cincy.

IF all this happens all we need is a bullpen and a legit closer and we're set.:ohwell:

(p.s. If anyone thinks all that shit is going to go exactly that way, then I have some tickets to sell courtesy of Bernard Rubble)

Not sure that Bruce necessairly has to step up, it is usally the easiest to find a good outfielder via Fagency.

I do agree with Votto tho...It would be great to get a good young 1B, any idea how his defense is?

We also have Ross for a couple years and he brings pop from the catcher spot and if we could let guys like Phillips, Freel, Denorfia lead off, steal bases and make plays on the basepaths why these other guys drive them around the bases we should have a nice little offense.

Then with pitching I think we are devoping a nice staff with Harang and Arroyo and Bailey.

I think Coffey is going to be a stud in another year or two, as he is an innings eater and just a hard ass worker.

Would also be nice to pick up another stud for the bullpen somehow, free angency or maybe draft(4 year college guy)...

Brey could be that guy. He was a #1 pick a few years back. I am sure there was something Kriv saw in him to move the heavy hitters he did.

What is Votto's upside? Hasn't he been in the minors for a while before his big season last yer?

Bruce, Denorfia or even Hopper, if any one of them could add some major league production life would be much improved. But, as Jax said, EE does need to bring some big time corner type production.

Mike Schmidt, somewhat out of the blue, dogs Dunn and Pat Burrell for their K's.

One quote from the article:

"Schmidt said that with a game on the line pitchers don't mind facing guys like Dunn and Burrell because they know they can strike them out."

Schmidt also explains that he was a 135+ K guy and that really bothered him and really worked on it. He also said he wished he would have not given into pitchers so often and choked up with 2 strikes and put the ball in play.

I absolutely get what he is saying. I watch the Reds 4-5 times a week. I see exactly what he and Marty are talking about with Dunn. Dunn is not a clutch hitter. His stats (except RBIs of course) are better with no runners on base. I looked at Dunn and Pujols' stats over the past 3 years. Now I don't expect Dunn to be Phat Albert. They had very close to the same number of plate appearances and nearly the same split between bases empty and men on. Dunn stikes out a ton more than Pujols, but he also walks more. The translation is that Pujols put the ball in play 212 more times or 70 more times per year with runners on base. It's not even so much the strikeouts that bother me the most about Dunn. He often goes up there looking for a walk. He strikes out looking way too often for a power hitter. Bottom line: he is not aggressive enough at the plate. And he does dog it out to his position. In Bull Durham terms, he's a LOLLY-GAGGER.

Now, I love the Big Donkey and I know Marty does as well. The "giving up" isn't on giving up on him as a player, it's giving up on him ever improving. He's been through at least 4 different hitting coaches since he has been here and nobody seems to have made a real dent with him. His RBI to HR ratio is pitiful. When you factor in his HR with men on, he produces virtually no RBIs without hitting a HR.

There is a reason Rich Aurilla was voted team MVP although he had nearly 20 less HR and 20 less RBI than Dunn. When games were on the line and the team needed a hit, Aurilla stepped up. If the situation did not force the pitcher to pitch to Dunn (i.e. bases loaded) he is often all to content to try to draw a walk, let the count go deep, and only get one good swing or strike out looking. Dunn hits most of his HR early in games with nobody on or late in games when the score is lopsided. That is the frustration. That is what many of us who are Adam Dunn fans would like to see improve.

I heard on the radio this morning that Dunn is already working out and Narron is pleased. That's good news. Let's hope it pays off. I would hate to think this kid peaked at 24. I still think he was really bummed about Kearns getting traded last year and that had a big impact on his second half. Hopefully that is behind him.

The guy is 26 years old, hits 40 HR, 100 RBI 100 BB, scores 100 Runs and OPS's .900ish like clockwork and Reds fans are all over him to improve. OooooKaaayy.

How about we all come to grips with the fact he's going to K a lot(sluggers tend to do that), it doesn't affect run production and find a way to live with having one of the top 10 offensive players in the NL playing left field for us?

Seriously, whatever you think of Dunn the fact remains he is the Reds best offensive player and has been for the past few years. I am amazed at how fans of a team this bad turn one of the few bright spots in the entire organization into the whipping boy.

Anyone notice that 8 or 9 of the 12 pitchers we will carry this year are completely fucking worthless? If changing who you are as a player is so easy why don't some of these stiffs miss some bats instead of pitching to (hard ass) contact? Do they get a pass from Marty if they run out of the bullpen and show emotion when they get another meatball smashed into the stratosphere?

Quit comparing him to Pujols. Dunn is a very good offensive player if he never improves 1 bit. Enjoy his talent's while they are here.
