</IMG> AL BEHRMAN ASSOCIATED PRESS Reds outfielder Josh Hamilton makes a diving catch on a fly ball hit by the Tigers? Magglio Ordonez on Thursday in Sarasota, Fla.

SARASOTA, Fla. ? The first pitch from Detroit Tigers reliever Fernando Rodney was a change-up, and Josh Hamilton swung too soon. Strike one. One pitch later, Rodney threw a fastball, and Hamilton waved at it too late. Strike two. For a moment, Hamilton looked like a player who had been away from the game for most of the previous 4? years.

Reds report
1x1.gif

Injury report: Second baseman Brandon Phillips was scratched from Friday's starting lineup because of a sore left shin. He fouled a ball off the shin during his fourth-inning at-bat Thursday.
Seen and heard: There is a very happy group of Girl Scouts running around Sarasota these days.

Reds get a 5-2 win today. Paul Wilson actually looked good in his 3 innings. No hits, one walk, one HBP. His fastball was up around 85-86 which is pretty close to where it was pre-surgery. Did a nice job of changing speeds, too. I didn't see a ball hit well while he was out there. If he can stay healthy, he could at least contribute to the rotation.

Didn't get to see the rest of it. Some basketball game on CBS stole my attention.

Reds' Wilson bounces back
Pitcher has solid outing after shelling
BY JOHN FAY | [email protected]

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Paul Wilson knows the pressure is on every time he takes the mound.
That's a difficult thing, especially when you're relearning how to pitch, as Wilson is, as he returns from shoulder surgery.
That made Saturday's outing - three innings of no-hit, shutout ball - very sweet in the Reds' 5-2 win over Cleveland.

Anyone have a projected lineup? It seems like we have a boatload of OF's who are capable and producing. Would it be:

C: Ross/Valentin
1B: Hatteberg
2B: Phillips
3B: Encarnacion
SS: Gonzalez
LF: Dunn
CF: Griffey?/Crosby
RF: Freel/Griffey/Crosby/Conine

To a degree that is what their website has listed. But I question our CF and RF positions. Frankly, all of our OFs have a weak spot that someone else could fill.

WLW was talking about the Reds desire to try Griffey in RF and also how he was "delaying" his return so that he couldn't be placed in RF. Any thoughts on this issue?

Enquirer projecting the 25

(also some trade talk to relieve the log jam on the pen in the news and notes)

We're going to take a weekly look at how the Reds roster shapes up:

PITCHERS

In: Bronson Arroyo, Aaron Harang, Kyle Lohse, Eric Milton, David Weathers, Mike Stanton, Rheal Cormier, Bill Bray, Todd Coffey, Kirk Saarloos.

On the bubble: That leaves a lot of people competing for two spots - if the Reds go with 12 pitchers. Matt Belisle will almost assuredly get one of them, but he has options. If Dustin Hermanson's back is good, he'll get the other one. All bets are off if Paul Wilson wins the fifth spot.

INFIELDERS

In: Juan Castro, Jeff Conine, Edwin Encarnacion, Alex Gonzalez, Scott Hatteberg and Brandon Phillips.

On the bubble: The Reds could go with six. Mark Bellhorn hasn't helped himself with the way he's played defense with nine strikeouts in 20 at-bats.

OUTFIELDERS

In: Adam Dunn, Ryan Freel, Ken Griffey Jr. and Josh Hamilton.

On the bubble: Very tough call between Bubba Crosby, Chris Denorfia and Norris Hopper for the other spot.

CATCHERS

In: David Ross and Javier Valentin.

On the bubble: Chad Moeller. This is a roster question - two or three.

WRAPPING IT UP

We've got 10 pitchers, six infielders, four outfielders and two catchers. That's 22. Assuming the Reds go with 12 pitchers - and we think they will - that leaves one spot for a position player. Our best guess is one of the three outfielders gets it. Crosby doesn't have options. Denorfia and Hopper do.

At this point imo:

CF: Freel
1B: Hatteberg
RF: Griffey (Narron can't resist moving him out of the 3 hole)
3B: EE
LF: Dunn (If he has the type of year he's projecting even Narron can't keep in 5th for long)
2B: Phillips
C: Ross
SS: Gonzalez

EE improving his D

Could be a nice infield D if EE has really improved. He showed some really great plays but inconsistant last year. If he is improved, add Gonzalez, Phillips and Hatte and we have a very nice IF D.

A common refrain amongst some of us when marty was calling to move him to fiirst base last year...rookies tend to make mistakes. EE's were all in the mental category ie. bad throw due to bad footwork from rushing. EE's range and arm at 3B are not MLB average, they are well above.

The funny thing to me is not more than a year removed from seeing David Wright have the same issues (almost the exact same number of E's as a rookie iirc) people were screaming about EE's defense as a rookie. I hope someone's got the sound bites to play back to Marty when EE wins a Gold Glove.

Its going to be very difficult for Narron to keep Josh Hamilton off the field. Not only is he the media darling right now with his muddied past but he's absolutely crushing the ball. Again we say "Its just spring training" but everyone else is just in spring training also and if its happening only because it is spring training, why isnt everyone batting .550? The guy is hustle all the way also with some fantastic fielding ability. I can totally see the ability to trade a couple of guys for a 4th or 5th starter coming up.

Our bullpen is going to be stellar this year. We won't have one guy dominate ala Trevor Hoffman or Mariano Rivera but our "committee" is going to be solid. We also have enough depth for injury coverage. I haven't been this excited about the Reds in a while, but I'm trying to be cautiously optimisitic.

I've been burned by spring training stats before, but I agree. It is hard not to be a little excited about our team. We know there is going to be bumps, but we actually have the depth for the first time in years to drive on. There are 9 pitchers who would have been a starter for us anytime over the last 5 years. We have 2 quality starters at the front. We have depth in the pen. And we have a dramatically improved D (all reports have EE and Dunner having spent the time to make major improvements in addition to a full year with Phillips and Gonzalez) which will only make our pitching depth look even better.

On top of the D, Hamilton has sure proved to be our CF of the future. Along with Hamilton, we have some good looking young talent on the roster (I know our overall depth isn't good at all, but hopefully we can hold on long enough with this roster to build the depth). We should have Phillips, EE, Votto, Hamilton and Homer as cornerstones for years. The long-term deals with Harang and Bronson Aroyyo ensure we'll have 3 affordable starters for a while.

Hard not to be excited for this year and beyond.

So Okinawa, seems like you changed your tune since you took a swipe at my reputation with this comment:
Unless you are in the DEEPEST of all keeper leagues, there is no way Hamilton is any type of Fantasy option. He hasn't even made the club let alone have a position where he will make a fantasy dent. You need some help dude. O1B
