Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

Cincy

TAMPA, Fla. - Brandon Phillips was taking batting practice before Wednesday's spring training game against the Yankees when a legend in pinstripes approached.
Hall of Fame outfielder Reggie Jackson sought out the Reds second baseman at Legends Field.
"He told me to keep up the good work and to believe in myself," Phillips said. "He also said to go out there and just play the game the best way I know how and don't ever take this game for granted."

Someone mentioned getting rid of the Lizard earlier, but I can't see that...

He is too young and has options...He could be a main cog in the rotation in a couple years...

I'd take EZ over Lohse and Milton any day of the week. Like you said however he has options and Milton has a big contact and WK has a man crush on Lohse so....

Not so much WK's crush on Lohse as Narron's. He's the one with big woods over Lohse's "stuff"!

Gammons $$

Talks about teams still in need of 2 SP (Toronto, wouldn't be a bad fit for Milton) and RP (How about we send Cromier back to Philly?). It wouldn't even take much to acquire these guys I imagine. That'd free up 10-12 million this year and allow us to persue bigger names at the deadline if we are in contention.

I'd doubt this will get many objections from this crew :) !

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

SARASOTA, Fla. ? Just 10 days after joining the Cincinnati Reds in July, rookie Bill Bray got his first taste of the life of a closer. He entered a game in Houston in the bottom of the ninth inning, with two outs, a two-run lead, the tying runs on base and the roof of Minute Maid Park closed, to keep the noise contained. "It was the loudest game I?ve ever been in," he said. "I just remember thinking that was pretty cool."

Continued....

Good point on who suffers from the man crush. Have I ever told you I don't like Narron one fuck? (you have to see Let it Ride to get that one I guess)

As far as Gammons rumor, I'll have to dig up the quote but when Milton was a FA the Toronto GM was asked why they didn't sign him and his reply was essentially 'He gave up 40 HR's last year and we have a hitters park' so I'd be suprised if thats the fit but you never know.

I've been preaching it but I'll say it again. If you have younger, cheaper guys who can give you similar production(or better) trade the older, more expensive guy, pocket a prospect and the pay flex.

Seems so simple you'd think everyone would live by it but they sure as hell don't. When you here catch phrases like "scrappy vet", "knows how to play the game" or "proven winner" chances are some GM somewhere is violating this simple premise and has a young guy blocked by the Jeff Conine's of the world.

Lost again today...

Arroyo threw 2 scoreless innings...

Bailey got roughed up for 5 runs in 2/3 innings...I am in a way glad that he is getting roughed up a bit this spring just so that he realizes that he has a little work to do to be ready to be on the staff...

Also of note Salmon thru another scoreless inning...And Hamilton had yet another hit today as he was 1-2...

He seems mature enough to realize when he is in camp he is working on things, not working on making the team. I expect to read about how he was working on his new change up in tomorrow's articles.

I was on the Buckeye hoops game and didn't pay any attention to the Reds game.

Salmon and Burton seem to be making their case loud and strong. I hope WK can find a way to work all this out. I know spring stats mean squat, but I like their stuff.

You forgot "professional hitter".

Conine = case # 2 of Narron's "man-love". Before you know it, Narron will have Lohse showing his great "stuff" to Conine in the "cage". A little wine and flowers and who knows where it will lead to next.

BTW Jax, I think I may have read somewhere before where you didn't care much for Narron - :)

I'd love to see us move Milton's 10 mill and donate a portion to Pokey, I mean Brandon Phillips on a 5-year deal on the cheap while he is still under contract. He got the shafter this year.

They usually say "he gives you a professional at bat." See Aurilia, Rich or Hatteberg, Scott as recent examples. To be fair however, RA had a couple of decent years with us.

It really means a guy who lost his power a few years back (if he ever had any) but has a decent BA and doesn't K a lot. Don't confuse them with things like OPS, RC or VORP. A scrappy vet who knows how to win and gives you professional at bat's is worth his weight in gold.

Marty and his type see these guys as being better than oh, let's say the Adam Dunns of the world.

Guys like me then have to listen to this shit AND watch our team suck balls 162 times a year for the past 7 years AND know that the current FO (up till now MAYBE) haven't got a chance in hell of fixing the problems. Top it off with a dumbfuck ex catcher as manager (baBoone, Miley, Narron) to fuck up what little he has to work with on a nightly basis and you have one gigantic Cincy style shit sandwich we've all been taking a bite of for what seems like an eternity.

Not that I'm bitter or anything, I'm just sayin.
