Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

The Reds and Yankees ended their game in a 1-1 tie after 10 innings. I didn't catch anything after the 6th inning or so, but the box score says Votto hit a home run for the Reds only run. When I was listening to the game, the Yanks radio team seemed impressed by Livingston and Burton, but they were also talking up Crosby a bit, so I'm not sure we can take much away from their impressions.

Still have 3 more weeks of ST. The picture will be clearer then, I hope.

Honestly the more competition all the way to the end is a better thing...But when you have guys that are unexpected to have the spring they are having then that makes decisions harder...Also we have some guys like Hermanson, Livingston, Wilson that could make the pitching staff a little harder to decide who to keep...

Also remember regarding Votto and Homer, if you call them up before September you start their arbitration clocks. Not fun to consider as a fan but as a GM it is of major importance. We might need Homer enough and he might be close enough to go ahead and do it. I don't see that being the case for Votto. I'll be shocked if he's in Cincy before September.

Good call on the arbitration. I guess I'm just overly optimistic that Votto is going to stick the first time and going back down wont be an issue nor would his confidence. I guess playing it cautiously is the smarter thing to do here. JV is definitely making his case this spring though.

The way this reads is Hopper and Freel together at the top of the order. If it was meant as Freel or Hopper, I didn't get that. Even then, to be at "the top of the order" he'd have to be in as a starter sometime, not the usual location for a 5th OF who would more likely be a PR or Defensive replacement than a spot starter.

Regardless, as I said, you had some good thoughts on your post. I wasn't trying to belittle it or anything.

Didnt take it that way. Sometimes when the brain gets working the typing kind of ...well doesnt.

We are going to end up having one of the deepest pitching staffs in the league this year. How frickin crazy is that?! Except for Milton, who isnt as bad as a 5th starter, the staff has some talent. The bullpen is as deep as I can ever remember it if a little unsettled at this point. The rotation will be fine after about a month into it. I think we'll have to tweak once or twice until June but I'm looking at things from availabilty standpoint and the only guys I'm afraid to have on the mound right now are Milty and maybe Cormier. Anyone else think EZ Ramirez is wearing a different uniform in a month or so?

I agree with Cormier. I know he's a vet and LH, but we have options to fill that role.

As for Liz, do you mean via trade? I can't imagine us moving him when he has options. He's too cheap and fits in nicely as a injury replacement in the rotation.

I think in most simple terms, the guys with options will be sent to AAA if the vets are playing well at the end of spring. I don't think there is any chance Votto starts the year with this team. If they are out of it by July, they will try to move Conine & Hatte but otherwise we will be seeing that tandem this year unless Votto is just crushing the ball down in L'ville. Personally, I think this team is still a year away and Krivsky and Narron know it so they aren't going to push guys or keep around players that will rot on the bench. Plus I'm sure they would like to hang on to both Hamilton and Burton if they continue to look as good as they do so far.

I heard reference to this article about Austin Kearns last night on the radio, his dad doesn't seem to think much of Reds fans:

Washington Post

"I'm telling you, those fans made a difference for him," Dan Kearns said. "They talk about Cincinnati being a great baseball town, but they look for you to strike out so they can boo. Here they were, Washington, in last place, and they cheered everything."

I don't know what he's talking about. Sure, they rail guys on the radio around here but I don't hear it when I go to games. If you listen to sports talk radio around here, you'd think no one likes Griffey but they cheer for him loud as hell at the games and you see tons of Griffey jerseys in the stands. Do the fans boo? Yes and some of them stupidly, but I hear alot more support than negativity. Personally, I don't boo but I don't blame them for booing when a guy whiffs with RISP late in the game. That's about the only time I hear booing after a K, even for Dunn.

They booed Griffey when he dove and dislocated his shoulder for christ sake.

I think Reds fans as a whole have been on the lunatic fringe since the strike to be honest about it. Passions for baseball run deep with our fan base and we've had nothing but bad ownership, bad management, bad teams and bad luck since then save of course '99 which was just an abberration. Add in the voice of the Reds being an old, bitter, negative little man who focuses his fury on an occurence that happens 150 so odd times a year (Dunn K's) and you can se why the average fan gets twisted up pretty easily. Also don't forget the type of fans AK's dad is talking about are the types who call in on the bannana phone, lots of Kentuckian's. Not the deepest part of the gene pool imo.

That said AK was always a little on the prima donna side, so this doesn't suprise me. I was happy he was traded, just didn't like the return.
