Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

With their win tonight, the Reds moved to 7-2 on the year and 12-3 over the past two seasons when I attend.

They announced that tonight's game was the hottest starting game time temperature (97 degrees) in the history of GABP. I'll go on the record saying that there were many games at Riverfront that were hotter and felt hotter than tonight.

Good to see Arroyo get rewarded with a 'W' after another good performance tonight.

Kudos to the Reds organization for not scrimping on the hot dogs tonight for Dollar Dog night. Those weren't wimpy, skinny hot dogs they were serving tonight. At least there's one thing this organization can get right.

Today's roster moves puts the Reds at 13 pitchers. Without even touching the nonsense of demoting Coutlangus and promoting Majewski, I ask this: With 13 pitchers and only two catchers now, who's gonna catch all the baseballs?

Finally, there was a pregame ceremony where Cintas was giving away a vehicle to one of two employees they had in from out of town. The guy who won got the chance to choose between a Tahoe and a Corvette, and the freakin' weenie chose the TAHOE. :shake: I don't have any kids, but I'd take the damn CORVETTE and tell my kids to ride in the trunk or walk, and to stick the built-in DVD player up their asses.

Arroyo doesn't sweat sweltering first inning

Adam Dunn scores on a two-run double by Edwin Encarnacion in the first inning.

CINCINNATI -- On a sultry summer evening when it would seem possible to fry an egg on a sleeping man's forehead, Bronson Arroyo took the mound for the Reds last night and promptly threw 31 pitches in the first inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The early exertion, with the temperature at 97 degrees and the heat index at 104, would not have been good for a Gila monster let alone a slender right-handed pitcher.
But during 6 2/3 shutout innings on the hottest night in Great American Ball Park's five-year history, Arroyo refused to wilt, melt or otherwise disappear during a 4-0 victory over the Dodgers.

Guardado, Freel going opposite ways

The Columbus Dispatch

CINCINNATI -- A tale of two seasons unfolded yesterday at two ends of the Reds' clubhouse while two players dealt with vastly different medical news.

The team announced that center fielder Ryan Freel will undergo arthroscopic surgery today on his right knee to repair torn cartilage. Freel talked quietly in front of his locker. He said he understood the procedure could put him on crutches for four to six weeks and end his season.

Well once again, the combination of Aaron Harang and Brandon Phillips just continues to impress me. Just think what they could pull off if they were even in a hint of a pennant race.

I am simply still watching baseball just because it's on, and in less than a month it won't even be a consideration.

BTW, with the shutout tonight, I believe this makes 28 or so straight innings that the Trolley Dodgers have failed to score a run. Ouch.

Phillips 2 web gems were magnificent! Harang might be the best pitcher in the National League. Yes Peavy, Webb, Penny and some others are having great seasons but Harang is doing what he's doing for the Reds! Don't even think about getting run support or have a chance to win you a game you should lose. For cryin out loud the guy pitches 10 innings of 1 run ball and gets a no decision. He's definitely the shit and with any help at all he could be a 20 game winner, no bullshit. Alas, he'll struggle to get 15 but he'll look great every time out.

Jr looks like he has really started to get better in Right Field also. The defense the guys showed tonight behind Aaron was the kind we hoped they would show all season.

Harang's pitching frustrates Dodgers
Low-key ace keeps L.A. in funk

The Columbus Dispatch

CINCINNATI -- Fame on the national level has yet to lay a finger on Aaron Harang, even though he seized the role as ace of the Reds pitching staff almost two years ago.

Being the big fish in a second-division pond such as Cincinnati always comes at a cost in endorsements. Yet the low-key Harang seems content to be another one of the guys in the clubhouse.
"He doesn't ever get any credit nationally," catcher David Ross said. "But that guy is one of the best pitchers in the league."

The amazing thing about harang is he does it in GAB. Think what his numbers could be like in Chavez Ravine, Shea, RFK or if he had stayed with Oakland.

Umpire Paul Emmel ejects pinch-hitter Adam Dunn for arguing a called third strike in the ninth inning.

CINCINNATI -- The seventh- inning moment had "ready or not" scrawled over it yesterday afternoon in colors as bright as the red seats and green grass of Great American Ball Park.
Cincinnati Reds interim manager Pete Mackanin needed a relief pitcher to protect a 3-2 lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers and to help bridge the gap to the ninth inning, where closer David Weathers waited.

Dear Mom,
How am I supposed to win in this job ? I spent 10 years slaving away in the crappy Minnesota system working my way up from the mail room, and I finally get a GM's job in Cincinnati. The fan's here got a new stadium a couple of years ago, and now they want to WIN all of the sudden, and everyone's on my case....No one here listens to ME, all they want to do is TELL ME what to do, or WHAT NOT TO DO....I fired half the "Scouting Department" last year because they wanted to disagree with me all the time about trading for Eddie Guardado and Gary Majewski....how did I know that their AGENTS would actually LIE about them being injured ? No one gave me any training- I didn't know they actually had medical reports you could ask for....All scouts do is drink beer and watch baseball games anyway, who needs them...- I KNOW- I was one, and I never found anyone that was any good. That damned Jim Bowden tricked me too....and now all the other GM's keep calling and asking if I want to trade for some more relievers, and laugh and hang up....
They said I was CHEAP...so I raised the payroll $20 million. I thought I got a great bargain on Adam Dunn at $13.5 million, he just wouldn't sign unless I gave him all that no-trade whatchamacallit, and now- NO ONE WILL TRADE FOR HIM.... we needed bullpen help, and Mike Stanton was just playing shuffleboard in the retirement home- I got him for $2 mil A YEAR, and everyone in Minnesota told me Kyle Lohse was a really good player and didn't want to trade him to me, but I got him anyway....and I found a really cheap drywaller that was an ex- major leaguer and signed him for peanuts. I claim EVERY CHEAP RULE 5 player out there, and they say I'm NOT doing anything to help this team...there just isn't any loyalty anymore..Mr. Castellini makes me bring all those old Big Red Machine guys back to shake hands with season ticket holders, and they won't even give me an autograph. Someone let Pete Rose in the other day and all he could do was gripe about me too. They are all jealous, I think.
Now Mr. Castellini is calling his old buddy Walt Jockety in St.Louis all the time.....I work my butt off and no one helps me. My free fantasy league team is in 3rd place - I know what I'm doing ! The problem is we have all these guys that have been used to being in the majors, and they don't appreciate anything. I wish everyone here would just leave me alone....and in a couple of years we would have all Rule 5 and waiver claim players and old guys that would thank me for giving them a job when no one else would...isn't that the nice thing to do, Mom ? You told me winning isn't everything. Well, it sure isn't...
Can you call Mr. Castellini and ask him to stop interviewing all these GM's ? I'm trying to listen to that Marty Brennaman griping about me on the radio....and you know what ? Mr. Castellini told me I CAN'T FIRE Brennaman, and he won't shut up about how bad the team is...I think he's trying to get my job too.....If I do get fired, can I move back in my old room for a while ? I'm thinking about running for President. No one argues with the President. Or maybe a cowboy.
Love, Waynie.

No, I wish I could take credit for that masterpiece but alas I cannot. Seems I'm not the only one a little less than impressed with ol' Special K.
