Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

Hopefully we are seeing the beginning of another Adam Dunn hot streak. Multiple hit games in a row and 0 K's today. I swear sometimes that guy just seems like his concentration isn't there and others he looks like you couldn't throw a BB by him. If he is zeroing in and Hamilton is getting his wind back, we may get some consistent offense for a couple weeks barring injury. Bray's situation is improving as is everyday Eddie. I'd like to see Livingston back up and get Dumatrait a few Major League innings to see if he can handle the call up. IMO, we will be selling at the All-Star break. The funny thing is, unless Griff is one of the guys gone, selling will probably improve the immediate team and with any luck the return will improve the future as well. I like the fact that Ross is coming around and some of the other guys are finding a groove before the deadline such as has been mentioned previously. This miserable piece of crap season may very well open the door for alot of future winning if we get someone to put the pieces together, someone to manage the pieces and some way to keep them all motivated.

Moving Stanton, Santos, Castro, Moeller and Majewski for Bray, Guardado, Livingston, Dumatrait and maybe Joey Votto would make me very very happy.

My thoughts have always been that the better Junior is playing, the worse off the Reds have been. I could be wrong, but it certainly holds true today. This is the ultimate sell-high if you ask me. I love the guy, and love seeing him get hot like this, because it actually makes the Reds worth watching, but this kind of a surge is what's going to get him a ticket out of town, IMHO. Not that there's anything wrong with that. The guy deserves to win. Somewhere. He's obviously not the reason that we keep losing, and his contract would pay for a lot of help in other areas.

It just seems that way because when Jr. is going good like he has been, the deficiencies in the rest of these clowns is magnified. I actually believe that over the past week Jr.'s surge has brought a couple of the other struggling guys over the hump with him. According to Hamilton also, Griffey has been his "Angel in the outfield" on his left shoulder to help him adjust to balls hit to center so far this season. Only good things can come from Griffey mentoring him the rest of the season. I really hope we don't move him at the deadline, unless an outstanding pitching prospect or major league ready reliever is in the mix. Maybe a future star at 1st, 3rd or catcher.

A blast against the last
Homers keep Reds ahead of majors' worst team
BY BILL KOCH | [email protected]

The Reds and the Texas Rangers are the two worst teams in Major League Baseball, but for entertainment value they feature two of the game's three most prolific home run hitters.
One of them put on quite a show Saturday night.
With Sammy Sosa needing just one home run to become the fifth player in major-league history to hit 600 for his career, he was upstaged by the Reds' Ken Griffey Jr., who moved two steps closer to that threshold himself by belting his 580th and 581st homers in the Reds' 8-4 victory at Great American Ball Park.

Reds notebook
They're losses, but not blowouts; Narron optimistic about a turnaround
BY BILL KOCH | [email protected]

When you're 16 games under .500 midway through June, you grasp at any shred of hope you can find.
Asked Saturday to come up with reasons why the Reds can expect to be better during the second half of the season than they have been in the first, Reds manager Jerry Narron pointed to the fact that his team has not been "getting blown out."
"We're in every game," Narron said. "We've lost a lot of games where we were either tied or within one run going into the seventh inning.

Right now he and Griffey are both in some kind of groove. Too bad the pitching can't put it together. Bronson wasn't awful, but he was far from good today. The D was absolutely horrible behind him. I'm finally worried about him, he looks like he needs to shut it down for a couple of weeks and come back fresh. He's still not finishing all of his pitches and seems fatigued mentally as well as physically. He needs to work on his approach too. He has a tendency to throw one right down the middle on the first pitch trying to get ahead and opposing teams have him scouted and are up there hacking. Harang looks tired also. The bullpen was pretty lousy again today, but it was the usual suspects. At least they didn't have a lead to blow. The D has to be better behind them though. The errors today were on routine plays and a couple of other mental mistakes that don't show in the box score didn't help either. At least Dunn's trade value should be on the rise.

This streak Dunn is on is absolutely awesome to watch. This is the type of hitter he can be, but it's never quite long enough to put him into that next tier of "elite" players.....that said his average is up nearly 30 points this week alone, that's crazy.

Now if he could remain consistently in the .275-.280 range, think of the OPS, not to mention RBI and Homer numbers he'd get

AND, I might add, if this streak can continue for another week or so, he'll be below the 200 Ks projection for the year :P

Lohse loses grip, game
Tide turns against Reds starter as A's build insurmountable lead
BY JOHN FAY | [email protected]

OAKLAND, Calif. - Kyle Lohse seemed to have it going. He wiggled out of sticky situation in the first inning with minimum damage.
But, as has been the case with Lohse all season, he can go from really good to really bad really fast.
It happened again Monday. He gave up five runs in the fifth and the Reds lost to the Oakland Athletics 6-1 in the opener of their three-game series.
The Reds are 0-7 against the A's in interleague play.
The Reds are going to need good pitching performances in this series to have a chance to stay in games.
Lohse was doing that right up to the point where he allowed Mark Ellis' three-run home run with two outs in the fifth inning.

Dunn has week to remember
NL honors Reds slugger, whose stock soars as possible trade bait
BY JOHN FAY | [email protected]
1x1.gif

OAKLAND - If the Reds are trying to trade Adam Dunn, he did them a favor. He pushed his stock up in the last week more than any player in the National League.
Dunn was named the NL player of the week Monday after going 12-for-24 with four home runs and eight RBI. He had a whopping 1.042 slugging percentage.
So what was responsible for the week that was?
