Reds Tidbits (2006 Season)

Good to get the win last night, but I'm going to bitch anyways.

How hard is it to turn a damned double play? In the bottom of the eight, a tailor-made DP ball hit to second where Phillips fields and just lobs it to second and the DP doesn't get turned. Perhaps Clayton took long getting to the bag and that's why the toss had to be gentle. Either way, it just about set me off last night. Especially when the next two batters singled and what should have been a four run lead going to the ninth was down to two.

Also, in case anyone is curious, here are Majewski's post-trade stats:

6 games, 1-1 W/L, 4 1/3 IP, 12 H, 1 BB, 7 runs (all earned), and a VERY hefty 14.54 ERA.

I hope they stop to think before they send the guy out in a close game, because he is getting smacked around every time out.

On a happy note, since June 25, Adam Dunn has raised his season AVG, OBP, SLG, and OBPS from .221, .364, .542, and .906 to .261, .388, .566, and .954 respectively.

In those 26 games and 102 ABs, he has 37 hits (.362 avg), 16 BBs (.449 OBP), 6 2Bs, 7 HRs, 26 RBI, a .678 SLG, and an OBPS of 1.127. Pretty damn good.

Well I will try and put a positive spin on this. I was kinda upset about that play too, but from playing second base all my life I know that can be an akward throw and when he turned to throw it, he didnt get any velocity on it.

As for majewski he will come around, alot of the hits have not been real lazers or anything.

If this was a one-time thing, I probably wouldn't have said anything, but these guys just seem to have a knack for NOT turning two. Earlier in the game, Aurilia fielded and threw a ball to Phillips who dropped it while trying to make the turn. Surely not an easy play, and they might not have gotten the batter at first either way, but at least make the turn and see what happens.

It's not really something that will show up in the box score because there are no errors on either of those plays, but they still gave the Astros two extra outs yesterday.

Okay, I'm done crying now. We've got a 2.5 game lead for the wild card and we're playing well. I shouldn't complain TOO much, right? :tongue2:

Clayton and Phillips also failed to turn a DP in the 6th inning two nights ago. Arroyo was cruising along, and instead of getting the DP and having nobody on and two outs, it was two on and no outs, then the wheels came off. On that play, Clayton ran behind the 2nd base bag and underhanded a toss right to Phillips, who was not expecting to receive the ball. That wasn't scored an E either. That play had as much to do with the loss Wednesday night as anything else.

Clayton and Phillips have only worked together for two weeks, so they'll eventually get much better as a pair.

Majewski may just be worn out, and is probably pressing as a Red to prove he belongs. Washington absolutely abused him. The worse he's done as a Red, the worse off he is in his following outing. His numbers since coming to Cincinnati are definitely an anomoly.

Hopefully. I didn't really see the chemistry coming together for Lopez/Phillips either, but perhaps I am being unfair seeing that they only played together for 3 months. It would be nice if, at some point, there is a tandem that gets to play together for several years.

I'll take your word for it. :)

Yeah, he really sucked that first inning. He earned his pay after that though. Good game by Milton, all in all.

Anyone notice how Clayton was under no circumstances gonna flip the ball to Phillips on that game-ending double play? Good job on his part to stick with it, but it's obvious he doesn't trust Phillips to make the turn. I miss the days when the Reds had a stellar and consistend double play combo.

Good to see Grif starting to get hitting again. If we can get him to get hot along with Dunn, thats going to be a big headache for National League pitching. I'm still looking for the Reds to make a deal for the 4th or 5th starter. I know they keep saying that they want to leave Bailey down but I think they should at least move him up to Louisville to see if he can keep his momentum going. Thoughts?

I'll have to defer to the GM on the Bailey thing. He hasn't missed yet so if he thinks he needs to stay put, fine by me. I would like to see another starter but I think Milton is the key. With him you have four, thats marginal, I really don't think you can consistantly win with three but again, I believe the GM thinks you can so, again, I'll defer. 3 1/2 back sounds pretty good though, big games today and tomorrow and a huge home stand around the corner. Go Reds!!!!

MILWAUKEE — Eric Milton got stronger with every inning he pitched.
The left-hander bounced back from a shaky first with six scoreless innings and Ryan Freel doubled home the go-ahead run in the eighth as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 last night.
"I felt my best in the last inning," Milton said. "I just couldn’t get loose for some reason."
The loss dropped the Brewers, who have watched their playoff hopes fade while losing nine of 13, a season-high seven games below .500. Milwaukee is seven games behind Cincinnati in the wild-card race. The Reds have won 10 of 14 since the All-Star Game.
Earlier in the day, Milwaukee traded All-Star outfielder Carlos Lee to the Texas Rangers for reliever Francisco Cordero and outfielders Kevin Mench and Laynce Nix.
Cordero worked a scoreless inning against the Reds. Mench was on the bench late in the game.
Milton (7-6) had allowed four runs or more in five of his last seven outings, but was sharp against the Brewers.
He had a rough first inning when the Brewers scored three runs, but then settled down. He limited the Brewers to one hit in the next six innings before being lifted for pinch-hitter Chris Denorfia in the eighth.
"It was more important for me to throw up six zeros," Milton said. "That was the big key."
With two outs in the eighth inning, Denorfia singled off reliever Matt Wise (5-5) and scored on Freel’s double to left.
"You make a mistake to him and he takes advantage of it," Wise said of his hanging change-up to Freel.
Todd Coffey and Bill Bray combined to pitch a scoreless eighth, but the Reds defense helped when third baseman Edwin Encarnacion’s diving stab robbed Geoff Jenkins with runners at first and second.
Eddie Guardado worked the ninth and put runners on first and third with one out before getting Tony Graffanino to ground into a double play. Guardado earned his sixth save.
"It’s another Reds win," Guardado said. "It’s exciting baseball."
Tomo Ohka, who beat the Reds and Milton in his last start, went five innings and allowed two runs on five hits. He missed more than 2 1 /2 months because of a right rotator cuff tear, but has gone 1-0 with a 2.50 ERA in three starts since returning to the staff.
"Ohka wasn’t nearly as sharp as his last time out," Brewers manager Ned Yost said.
Rick Helling took over to start the sixth, but failed to hold the 3-2 lead as the Reds pushed across one run.
Milton walked with one out. Adam Dunn walked with two outs. Milton scored on Ken Griffey Jr.’s double and Dunn was thrown out at the plate.
Jeff Cirillo doubled home two runs in the first and Prince Fielder’s one-out single scored Cirillo.
Milton got one run back with his sacrifice fly in the second. In the fifth, Dunn doubled, advanced on a groundout and scored on Encarnacion’s grounder to third, making it 3-2.
Ejected
Reds manager Jerry Narron was ejected in the bottom of the second by home-plate umpire Brian Runge for arguing about pitch location. It was his fourth ejection this season.

Excellent job by Narron getting himself ejected last night! Not only did it help Milton get some calls from the 2nd inning on that he didn't get in the 1st, it meant Hume got to manage the pitching staff in the 8th. It was really nice seeing a manager that actually swapped pitchers to get lefty/lefty and righty/righty matchups to record a scoreless 8th, rather than just running Majewski out there to get shelled and lose the game 6-4, which is what Narron would've done.

If Narron hadn't been ejected, the Reds would've lost that game, and big.

Also, a good call by jlb in seeing Clayton turn the DP in the 9th by himself. Clayton and Phillips better get an apartment together in Cinci, and room with each other on road trips. I know they're separated by about 15 years in age and have only been together on the team for two weeks, but there is clearly something going on between the two, and it's affecting their performance on the field. It may have already cost the Reds the chance to sweep Houston, and could've been a huge blow last night too.

If Clayton is part of the Reds after 2006 I'll put a hit out on Krivsky. The future should be Phillips at SS and TBD at 2B.

I still think Kriv overpaid on the trade but to be fair it seems the team attitude has been 100% improved and you can't argue about the record since.

5th starters spot, Jr's slump(hopefully over) and Narrons low IQ are the three most pressing issues to me for the stretch run. Narron being by far the biggest problem as he sets the lineup poorly and mismanages his pen on a nightly basis.
