Former Formula 1 champion and motorsport legend Mario Andretti has shared his insight into the driver lineup for the Cadillac F1 team ahead of the team entering the grid in 2026.

The American outfit is yet to confirm which two drivers will be joining, or returning, to the grid next year. But Andretti has confirmed that Mexican driver Sergio Perez is being considered amongst others. However, the 1978 F1 champion points out the "somewhat limited" choice available to the General Motors-backed organisation.

During an interview with Fox Sports, Andretti, who is on the board of directors at Cadillac F1, explained:

“All I can tell you is that he’s [Perez] certainly one of the drivers that’s being considered. He has to be. I cannot divulge as to where we are with any commitment whatsoever — I think we want to keep that luxury to ourselves until we feel that we have scanned the entire spectrum of availability. I think that’s a prudent thing to do.

“The choice is somewhat limited — let’s face it, a lot of the great talents are already under contract. Fortunately still there are a few out there — three or four; I’ll say maybe three — that certainly deserve consideration, and all of this is being looked upon very seriously. There are some conversations going on somewhere and in some other places. That’s as much as I can tell you to be fair to everyone.”

Multiple drivers have been linked to the team, although nothing is confirmed as of yet. As well as Perez, IndyCar drivers Colton Herta and Alex Palou, former F1 driver Mick Schumacher, Mercedes reserve driver Valtteri Bottas, and Ferrari reserve driver Zhou Guanyu, have all been rumoured to be in talks with the eleventh F1 team.

Although Andretti did not reveal any names, he confirmed the team was pleased with the response to some of the drivers mentioned. He added:

“What’s encouraging is that there is really some good reaction to individuals that want to join. I think that’s a good thing for us.”

Cadillac have confirmed their driver line-up ahead of their debut Formula 1 campaign in 2026.

Cadillac have signed Grand Prix winners Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas to be their drivers when the team joins the Formula 1 grid for the first time in 2026.

The American squad, who are backed by General Motors and will be led by former Marussia Sporting Director Graeme Lowdon, will become the sport's 11th team next season.

Cadillac have opted for experience with their line-up, signing 'Checo' Perez and Mercedes reserve Bottas – who boast 527 Grand Prix starts and 16 Grand Prix wins between them – on multi-year deals.

“Signing two very experienced racers like Bottas and Checo is a bold signal of intent," said Lowdon. "They’ve seen it all and they know what it takes to succeed in Formula 1. But more importantly, they understand what it means to help build a team.

"Their leadership, feedback, race-hardened instincts and of course their speed will be invaluable as we bring this team to life. A big thank you to the team at Mercedes for their co-operation and understanding.”

It marks a remarkable return for the veteran duo, both 35, after they lost their respective F1 race seats at the end of last season.

Cadillac F1 Announces Bombshell IndyCar Driver Signing for 2026

Just a week after the Cadillac F1 team announced its bombshell 2026 driver lineup, comprising Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas, the team has now announced IndyCar driver Colton Herta as a test driver for the 2026 season.

The sport's eleventh team, which officially received approval to enter the premier class early this year, has been gearing up for its debut season, which coincides with the onset of a new era of regulations. Cadillac F1 announced its driver lineup last week and suggested that it preferred F1 experience over fresh talent.

Now though, the team has signed Herta, who drives for Andretti in IndyCar, a team owned by the same TWG Motorsports group that owns Cadillac F1 in partnership with General Motors.

The 25-year-old driver has been linked to F1 in the past. He was a McLaren development driver in 2022 and is also said to have received significant interest the following year from Red Bull's junior F1 team, Racing Bulls (then AlphaTauri).
