Reactions to the 2006 season

Hi everybody, I just registered here but I'm a long time Buckeye fan. ( Thanks dad. )

The 2006 season had FAR more ups than downs, and I'm coming to terms with our performance in the National Championship more and more each day. But, at the same time, I feel its partially my fault. I was one of " those " fans, I was so confident in our team that I honestly thought we couldn't be beaten. After the Texas game, I wrote off every opponent we came against, often not expecting them to keep it within double digits, even Michigan. In otherwords like most people here I was riding the wave on what I assumed would be one of the best seasons in the history of Ohio State football. I was wrong.

After our performance against Michigan and Troy Smith winning the Heisman, I saw no reason how or why we could lose to Florida. I was cocky, arrogant, and showed no respect towards their program, and to be honest I think a lot of our fans were that way. Needless to say, I learned my lesson and once again got slapped in the face by the " Any given day " philosophy.

I don't think Florida was a better team, and you'll never hear me say they were. Should we have won that game? Absolutely. Did we choke? Nope, we never even showed up.

Most of all, I would like to give Troy Smith a pat on the back. I've seen Ohio State " fans " give him the shaft after his performance in the NCG, and its just laughable. He was 3-0 against Michigan, won a Heisman trophy, passed for over 70 TD's and ran for 1500 yards in his career. Until someone better comes along, he will always be -the- QB of The Ohio State University.

I just woke up so slap me a few times if I'm babbling about nothing. :P

Focus: I'm not going anywhere and I'm not changing my tune about this team, I love what these guys did and one game doesn't change that.

Thanks for the post

Thank you for the post. It seems that you have a great attitude about the team and people here on the board will appreciate that. You are right, people have generally displayed too much angst over what was a great season. It's also surprising how much criticism the Bucks have faced considering they almost won the f-ing national championship.

But hey, we all love the Bucks and it's still great to be a Buckeye Fan. Just look at the departing seniors on the top of this page and how can you not smile with pride.

Take a good look around this board and take advantage of some of the great things people are willing to do and share about the bucks.

:oh: :io:

One game, even a National Championship game, does not erase a season of greatness!

We won 12 straight games.
We won our conference outright.
We beat TSUN in one of the best, if not THE best game of the year.
We had the first Big Ten QB to win a Heisman, in a landslide vote!
We went to the BCS Championship Game.
We finished #2 in the country.

And the coaches that got us to 2 BCS Championship Games in 5 years are coming back!

If at the start of the season you told me "You're going to win the big 10 title and beat scUM, but lose a BCS Bowl" I would have said "Our season will be a success" and I still feel that way.

I think the main thing that has made this loss so tough is that we didn't even compete, we were completely dominated on both sides of the ball and what makes it worse is that it wasn't a talent issue. If we go out there and go 0-12 trying our damndest against every team we play, I wouldn't be mad in the least. But, that performance was inexcusable. BUT, its also necessary to look at the positives of this season and what our seniors and juniors who are departing this year have accomplished.

Honestly, its going to be pretty hard for me for the first few games next year without Troy Smith lining up under center, I really grew attached to him not just as an athlete, but as an outstanding young man.

This was a great season and one that produced a Heisman Trophy winner. Alot of coaches would take that and a #2 rating, not too shabby by anyone's standards. Now, in typical Buckeye fashion lets bid our departing seniors and underclassmen a fond farewell, and get ready to GET IT ON next season!!!!!

Peace, and GO BUCKS!!

The fact that we kept scUM out of the title game by itself makes this year a success in my books.
In the words of Tommy Smyth: "It may not have been a vintage championship, but believe me it will taste as sweet to these ... supporters as any they have ever secured, because they have stopped [damned piece of shite team that wears blue] from taking the penant and all..."

YNWA motherfuckers...

I have three expectations for our team EVERY year--

1. Beat TSUN

2. Win the Big Ten Championship

3. Win the National Championship

If they accomplish number 1 on the list, the season was a success. The other two are the icing on the cake. So it was a very successful campaign this season, as all but one have been under Tressel.

That said, I still don't understand what the hell happened in the NC game. One thing is for certain, it will never truly be a NC game until there is a playoff. Whatever happened on Jan 8 would not have happened if we played a first round playoff game on 12/1 or 12/8. This is a game of precision timing and execution, that is where speed comes into play, and clearly it was no where to be found in January. That is why we all are still wondering what happened...there is no connection between the way our team played all season and the way they played in the NC game...and how about real home field advantage...OHIO in December...hell yeah!

GO BUCKS!

I have to be honest, I still have an empty feeling after that loss, but I have moved on. To me, the loss was about the extraordinary time between the TSUN game and the NC game and I hope the coaches learned something about that. Teddy went down and we went with him and that was that.

That said, I am very proud of what this team accomplished. They truly weathered the greatest storm to ever hit Ohio State football during their careers. I have nothing but respect for what they accomplished and I am just sad that they didn't close down that last link.

We are very lucky to support one of the most successful teams in organized sport. We are lucky to be Buckeyes.

Future style of play changes

I know this may end up merged with the 2007 season thread., but I was hoping to chew on this for a little bit with fellow bucks. If anything, it will cleanse the salty wounds I still feel from 1/8/07.

Changes I hope to see. Defense - I hope Tress learned from that and will blitz, spy, stunt and basicly get the defense on par with the 85 Chi. Bears !:wink2:

Hitting - I want to see some filthy hits. No more dancing and shirt pulling to the ground. I want the attitude adjusted to come in like a junk yard dog with AIDS ! Hitting over and over can drive a team to submission.

Offense - change the #*&% I-formation predictable calls. split back,.Y., I would love to see different run plays from offense.

Game time adjustments. - If something isn't working., change it !!!!!

I have vented this to friends and family., but does anyone honestly think any of the above will change after Tress watches the film from 1/8 ?

Sincerely,

Salty dog in Cincy right now. :(

P.S. Regardless of what they do; I'll always stick by them., but please somebody give me some hope !
