Reactions to the 2006 season

It is a sad truth that in this business you are only as good as your last game...

But we can be grateful in a perverse sort of way because when ESPN classics come around the 07 BCS Championship Bowl game will not get much play because there's not much to see. An instant classic it ain't.

And just imagine if the Bucks had outplayed them all night long and lost it on a Hail Mary after blowing a 7 yd field goal that would have iced it. That sumbitch would be on forever.

and our gratitude can be focused on the fact that The Game 06 will get replayed because there is much to see. And Michigan fans will have to sit and watch Robiski make that grab in the corner of the end zone and keep that foot just inside the chalk, or watch the year before and see a twelve point lead melt in the Ann Arbor sunset as Smith spins out of a tackle and hits Gonzo, who holds on despite a terrific hit by the corner.

I have 2 sons, ages 10 and 12. A week or so before Christmas, my sons, my wife, and myself, partake in a random drawing for gift exchange purposes. The only caveat, is that the gift for the person whose name is drawn needs to be handmade/homemade. Great!! What in the hell am I going to make?!? Oh well, it's the thought that counts right?

This year I drew my oldest boy's name. I made him a "book" commemorating the 2006 OSU football season. The cover was a pic of JT leading the team out of the tunnel. Each page had at the top, the headline from the Dispatch's Sunday section for the game, with a couple of pics including captions, from the game. Basically, each game was one page in the book, except of course for The Game, which needed 5 pages due to the number of pics used. The next to last page had headlines of Troy winning the Heisman and some pics as well. The last page had a headline promoting the NC game vs Florida.

Quite pleased with my "creativity", I made three simple holes with a hole puncher, ran some redish colored yarn like material through the holes and tied it off and my 19 page gift was made. We do the exchange on Christmas Eve and he is pleased with it. Nothing major excitement wise, probably cause he knows the mother lode comes the next day complete with a Razr phone, Xbox 360, etc. Eh, it's the thought that counts right?

That "gift" I made for him sits on the nightstand by his bed. It has been there since January 3rd. As recently as last night when I went to tuck him in, I see him with that "book" in his hands looking through it. He shows me one of the pics, where Lil Animal is laying a picture perfect tackle on a ball carrier, and makes a football related comment. Then he closed the book, set it on his nightstand, and said, "Ya know Dad, this is one of my favorite presents I got this year. I remember each game when I look through this book and remember how awesome we were this year. Really cool idea. Thanks."

Little does he know that I should be thanking him for the gift he keeps giving me every time I see him looking at his "book". And for the gift of seeing things through a youngsters eyes, where the greatness of the season isn't diminished by the last game.

It's been my experience that a team is never as good or bad as they looked in a game like that. UT wasn't that much better than Cal last year but they were the day they played. Ditto Arkansas/USC and in my biased opinion, UF/OSU.

I don't think Florida was a better team, and you'll never hear me say they were. Should we have won that game? Absolutely. Did we choke? Nope, we never even showed up.

This is what really bothered me. I could almost feel it coming though. After playing in two #1 vs. #2 games in the season already, the NCG just was not as big of a deal to fans and the team as it should have been.

I even remember a conversation with my dad before the Meeechigan game, saying "As long as we beat Michigan, I'll be happy with this season." That game was the one OSU fans, players, and coaches were preparing for all year. I never thought there could be such a thing as a "letdown game" when a National Championship is on the line, but we saw it.

The 2006 season will always be remembered as a great team with arguably the greatest OSU player ever (yea, I still believe it). But still, I can't help but be disappointed that seemingly no one was ready for the title game. There was a sense of accomplishment before we even got to Glendale that prevented the Buckeyes from being 100% prepared and motivated for a game of that magnitude. Unfortunately, I will always be disappointed with the 2006 season.

Will do. :biggrin2: But make sure Mike here treats his guest with respect. :wink2: Then I will be sure to return the favor.

Thanks for the tip on how to moderate an OSU forum, junior...now can we please get back to talking about "Reactions to the 2006 season"?

As for the Heisman part, I was basically implying I didn't say Tebow will for sure be a super start, but I think he will have a great career.

As for the reaction to 2006 OSU

I wont pretend I am upset they lost the title game. It was still a good season and I would take it in Knoxville. We could use a championship right about now.

I've often heard the theory opined that OSU/scUM's Bowl woes in the 70's were due to the fact The Game was so big and so emotional the winner and loser were both flat and uninspired for the next game.

I don't think its an excuse, but its a possible reason.

I actually had to clean out the cobwebs out after this season; began taking things for granted after the victory over Iowa. All-in-all, a wonderful season & was able to give my 10 Cols. Dispatches away easily to my Gator neighbors here in Ga. Told myself: Self, these are kids here, quit yer monin! Look forward to springball as always. Cannot wait for mid March to arrive!
:oh: :io:

Its True what alot of you said. The game in C-bus took alot out of both teams and then they had to wait almost 44 and 51 days to play again.
Plus Florida got in thru the back door to play the Buckeyes because of
UCLA's upset over USC.

I just happen to think that the N/C game between Ohio State and USC would have been a more intensive game for Ohio State had USC won over the bruins. It was very difficult for me to take the loss in the N/C game because of living here in Florida. I was very concerned about our game with Florida because I knew they had speed especially from the defensive line. I was hoping OhioStates offensive line could handle them but it did not happen.
It was a great season like you all said but I wonder when we will ever get back to a season equal to the one of 2006.

I think my biggest complaint about the season was the lack of response from the coaching staff. As noted throughout this thread, I was very happy with the season and the overall result. We really shouldn't complain about how well this team did all season.

However, I really felt shafted when the coaching staff side-stepped any ownership of the NC game. I truly expected JT to step up and offer some words of explanation and consolation for the team, the university, and the fans. That game was such a drastic change from everything tOSU has done since Tressel took over (except JT's first bowl game against SC and the Iowa game in '03). How and why did we play so poorly and why did our coaching staff fail to modify their game plan at the half.

I think this is my biggest complaint about this season. Since '02 I have always said "In Tressel we trust" but that loss really changed my perception.

As Jaxbuck implied, this was a coaches' loss. For the first time in a long time, I think JT got outcoached. And I think that happened by under-estimating his opponent.

I think he was still in the game until the blown 4th-and-1, and then a bad situation got worse when he called a pass play right before the half and Troy was hammered and fumbled the ball.

That was all they needed.

Just as players learn, I think the coaching staff will learn from this.

Who did the press really, really love before the NC game? That's right, Jim Tressel.

He will be back, smarter and wiser. Go Bucks!
