RB Roderick Smith (Official Thread)

Put in a name...

Hyde....Smith....Dunn....Ball....

ALL these guys are special and when given the chance are going to excel (as Hyde already has). Ball? Could be the best of the bunch by the time he ends his career. Just sayin...

But if Smith can hold onto the ball he's going to be really special imho.

Carlos is the better north/south runner of the two but make no mistake about it the better back as far as making big plays IMO is Rod Smith. I always perk up when I see #2 out there but now it's just can he hang onto the ball?

I too have always been a fan of RS. It's funny that after 2 years of playing time if a kid isn't nationally known you figure he doesn't have what it takes to be a stud. Rod could turn into an excellent back, time will tell. Sort of like Curtis Grant, he hasn't shown us anything yet but if the light bulb does come on they have fully half their time in C Bus still ahead of them. They both just need to take advantage of the opportunity.

Once Hyde recovered from injury and claimed a lock on the job, over the last seven games of 2012 he rushed for 812 yards and 14 TDs. With a healthy season, CCG, and bowl game, Hyde could have been a 1500 yard/25 TD back this year.

Rod Smith is good, but he's got some big shoes to fill. Carlos was a beast by seasons end.

Agreed, but RB is a position where we can afford attrition.

Rod Smith and Brionte Dunn will bring plenty of power; Ball is a great balanced back and the '13 class has plenty of speed (also with Hall) to give the OC the same options we would have had with Hyde. I'd much rather have him than not have him, but the affect of this loss is not similar to that of what losing an elite CB would be...

Agree. Hyde was a sledgehammer and someone OSU needed in this offense to balance it out. He could've been an All American if he had stayed healthy and played to his potential.

Smith is good, it just depends on how consistent he can be. I didn't realize this, but his game high for carries in 2012 was only 6. Is he going to be able to carry the ball 30 times if needed? He definitely has the ability, but that has to be hard as a player to go from 32 carries for an entire season to being the feature back in an offense where you might need to have that many carries in a big game.

That's what the difference is between Rod and Hyde. Hyde was not afraid to just attack someone in his path and while Rod also is a physical guy because of his height it allowed people more opportunity to trip him up. However, with that said because of Rod's Height I wouldn't be shocked if he's a little better with a straight arm.

Either way as it's been said RB is a position I'm not worried about. It'd be better to have Hyde but it doesn't change our seasons goals.
