Smith works to make impact with Buckeyes
He hasn't played yet and has competition for tailback.
By Pete DiPrimio
of The News-Sentinel
Rod Smith gets nothing but Ohio State football opportunity. Guarantees are for other programs and situations.
The former Harding standout faces a tailback logjam that reflects Buckeye depth and heritage. Potential is fine, but results count. He understood that when he came a year ago. Nothing has changed.
?I'll give it all I've got,? he said. ?It's all about competing, winning games and trying to get to that next bowl.?
Winning is a Buckeye mandate. They've won sixth straight Big Ten titles, in part because of a powerhouse rushing attack. The latest competition comes from veterans Jordan Hall (169 yards, two touchdowns last season), Jaamal Berry (267 yards, one TD) and Carlos Hyde (145 yards). Smith's numbers still come from his high school days, when he set the SAC career record by rushing for 6,625 yards and 66 touchdowns, although he did rush for 36 yards in last month's spring game.
Running backs coach Dick Tressel has said a tailback rotation is likely. Smith understands that even while shooting for more.
?I want to be an all-time back. I'm working on everything.?
Competition hasn't bred animosity.
?We hang out together outside of football,? Smith said. ?We know it's a competition and a spot is open, but at the same time we're all friends. We all want to be the best, but nobody is going after each other too serious.?
Smith hasn't played a competitive game in nearly two years. He's paid his dues, gotten his academics in order, and learned the Buckeyes' system.
?I'm anxious and ready to get out there and see what it will be like for the first time in college,? he said. ?When I do get my shot, it will be fun.?
Smith reported late to last preseason camp because of summer academic obligations from high school. He eventually redshirted, which worked to his advantage.
?I got a good fresh start academic wise,? he said. ?I've been doing real well there. It gave me an opportunity to learn the plays more and get a better feel for the Big Ten level.?
