RB Maurice Wells (Official Thread)

If professional football doesn't work out, I hope he uses his degree (if attained) to the best of his ability.

He was a good teammate during his four seasons and looked like he supported the other tailbacks.

Way to go out a Winner Mo. You are a true Buckeye, playing with class and effort your entire career, no whining or belly aching, just hard, determined work.

Absolutely! A true team player his whole career. Teams need guys to play their roles...for every Pryor or Beanie there are 3 guys sitting the bench behind them. Mo seems like a good kid and I sure hope he succeeds in whatever he does in life.

Although I still wished we could've found some more ways to get him the ball in some space...he's just not an off tackle runner. But that's already been discussed to death! :)

Way to go Mo...show off all those gold pants hangin' around your neck!

Buckeyes' RB Maurice Wells eyeing NFL
By Carlos "Big C" Holmes

When you hear the name Wells associated with Ohio State running backs, the first name that comes to mind is Chris "Beanie" Wells, of course. But before Beanie there was another talented runner named Maurice Wells who the Buckeyes held in high regard.

Senior Maurice Wells was considered one of the top running backs in the country coming out of high school, rushing for career totals of 5,955 yards and 55 touchdowns. However, that type of production never translated onto the playing field in college for whatever reason.

Wells seemingly got lost in the shuffle behind Beanie and Daniel "Boom" Herron and became a forgotten man. Now the one-time High School All-American will take the long road to fulfilling his dream of playing in the NFL.

During a phone interview with Wells on Monday, he expressed his desire to play in the pros and why he never lived up to his ability performance wise while at Ohio State.

Beanie 'better fit'

"Beanie came in as a pretty high recruit and fit their style of offense a little better than I did," Wells said. "He's a power runner with speed who can run up the middle and run the safety over for the score. Whereas I was a one-cut get- up-the-field type of runner. When Antonio Pittman left school the job was his to do what he wanted to do with it. I guess you can say I got lost in the shuffle."

Wells was highly recruited himself taking official visits with Georgia Tech, Maryland and USC before settling on Ohio State.

It was hard for the former high school star running back to get used to being in a back-up role. In fact, it was a major disappointment to him.

"It was difficult at first," Wells said. "I looked at it like I could rebound from it my junior and senior year. I was just trying to stay positive. You want to talk about handling adversity. I was actually getting ready to transfer after my sophomore year, but I talked to the coaches and they convinced me to stay around. The coaches said they would find ways to utilize me and Beanie to help with the offense."

I bet his chances in the NFL are better than most think.....he picks up the blitz pretty well, smaller RB's are having success in the league (MJD, Sproles, Leon Washington, Jamaal Charles, etc.)

tOSU never really utilized his strengths, although he did an excellent in pass-pro when that was duty. It'd help if he had shown more explosiveness in retruns, as most of th elisted guys above have excelled in that capacity before getting much action on the field, but then again, maybe he becomes a decent return-man at the next level. For whatever reason, tOSU hasn't been able to break any returners loose, and our return average was one of the worst in the country last year. Not sure where we ranked this year...

Anyways, good luck Mo....thanks for sticking around, and showing the young guys how to handle some adversity.

Difference being that Turner was a beast in college. Maybe someone like a Ryan Grant who didn't see a whole lot of carries behind Darius Walker, or a Willie Parker.
Yeah I agree, I don't see any similarities at all between Wells and Turner. Maybe similar in height but they have totally different body types, running styles and as mentioned production in college.

Sure. Give him a decent line behind which he can run, then he could be a decent #2 back, carrying the ball 8-10 times a game to spell the starting RB.

Plus the added dimension of catching balls out of the backfield.

I think there is a definite niche in the NFL for Mo! Good luck!

I think people cut the RB's too much slack for the poor line play. Obviously, there were plenty of times when Maurice met a d-lineman just after taking a hand-off. But there were also many frustrating plays where he just didn't have the vision to bounce a play outside. See his carry in this Fiesta bowl where (I think) he should have seen there was no hole in front of him but he had space towards the sideline to work. Maurice never seemed to improvise if his hole was closed (which it always seemed to be).

I think he can at least make a practice squad where he can work on a specialized role. But, with such tunnel-vision in college I can't see him making it work in the NFL. Hope I'm wrong.
