RB Maurice Wells (Official Thread)

Breakout year coming from Mo Wells. You can just see it coming.

I'd like to see Mo get 2 carries for every 5-6 that Beanie gets. Keeps em both fresh and allows them to stay into the flow of the game. Mo should also see at least one catch in there between his and Beanie's carries if possible.

So far Mo Wells reminds me a little too much of Eric Metcalf. Too easily knocked down to run between the tackles and dances around a little too much looking for the holes. I did notice that get better during the year last year, especially against worse opponents, but I'll be looking for more improvement from him. I'm hoping he works his way up to around 10 carries a game. If Beanie can get 20 and Mo 10, that will be a solid spread. I know Saine (or Herron) are going to be stars, but I'm pulling for Mo to earn the #2 spot.

I have this aversion to Buckeyes not doing well so I am hoping like crazy that Mo Wells excels this year. Anyone who works hard should get his just rewards.
:oh:

I really think he can. He just needs open space. He should be an exceptional 3rd and long guy out of the backfield, and I bet he could torch a blitzing defense if we set up some good screens for him. He's not a between the tackles runner (as we all know), so the offense needs to find creative ways to get him outside so he can do his damage. So far, we've mostly seen him playing in mop-up time with the backup O-line. If we get some serious NFL-style rotation with these two, they'll both do a lot of damage. Beanie up the middle, Mo in the flats... let's just say we should have no problems converting on 3rd down, long or short.

Oh, and :io:

Wells has had a couple good runs between the tackles...he's a little better now at finding the holes quicker than when he first got here. He'll be noticeably better this year all around with his increase in size, strength, and experience...

i don't get the whole "he isn't big enough to run between the tackles" argument. how big is Warrick Dunn? he's been running between the tackles in the NFL for eight years...

Most runners of his size don't like being between the tackles and are over-cautious to hit holes between the tackles......look at guys like lorenzo booker, eric metcalf, also our own Maurice Hall, and about a million other "smaller" backs who try and hit everything outside. It's not to say smaller backs can't be in-between the tackle runners, it just takes a lot of guts and balls most players don't have

It will be great to see if we can get Maurice out in open space this year....there's a reason he was as highly touted as he was, and I truly believe we haven't seen anything near what he can contribute......it's up to the coaches to bring out Maurice's best skills

Maurice is so fast!! He showed what he could do once he got some space in the open field. I was impressed with him yesterday and it looks like he has put in the needed work to be a very important piece to our offense this year. He, Beanie and Saine are going to be a very formidable groups of RBs and could possibly be the top unit in the country by season's end.

I am reading the Blade account of the game and noticed that Mo Wells actually was the most productive of our RB's with"
8 carries for 45 yards.
Beanie had 46 yards on 16 carries,
and Saine had 42 yards on ten carries.
Mo also had 3 catches for 23 yards.
All in all A good job MO!

lol, that just proves that for some reason people just tend to overlook this guy. I'm betting that in a few weeks people will no longer be overlooking him.
