RB Maurice Wells (Official Thread)

Ok I went back and watched all of Mo Wells runs and a couple of other plays of his.

1. Went for 4 yds. and he missed the cut.

2. was the option run down by the goalline. Went for 4 yds and he was really running hard.

3. Next play from the 1 tried to power his way in but there was no push.

4. He looked kind of like Ross on this run, he ran straight into the back of line and got tackled. He could of cut it either way for a nice gain.

5. This was the play that was a very creative play call, we faked the reverse to Ginn and pitched to Wells. If Holmes doesnt let his guy go he is running for about 15 yds. He got 4.

6. This was a toss sweep with two pulling lineman and Stan white leading the play. White has his guy hooked and then let him inside and he made the play only 2 yards.

7. He next run was a downer. It was 3 & 2 and He could of got the first down going to where the play was designed instead Datish guy came underneath him from the backside or the cutback probably would of been there, this is one of those where he was just a step slow on the cutback.

8. Draw, best run of the day, he set his blockers up perfectly and had a nice run.

9. The very next play was the one I thought he could of broke for a big gain. He went playside ad tryed to cut it across the grain. There was no one over that way, but the frontside lb came shooting through the gap and made the shoestring tackle, if he makes that cut right away he is gone, instead no one blocks the frontside backer and he is tackled for no gain.

The play after that the option pitch was there for a big gain and Smith held on to it.

Overall he had a pretty good day. I can see him just running lose here soon. He reads his blockers well and has the speed and cuts to make guys miss. Once he is cutting just a split second sooner he is going to be elusive.

He can also picks up the blitzers very well. Mili if you could there is a great block by him with 11:03 left in the 3rd quarter. He completely flipped the d-lineman over.

Also Mili I was wondering what beddie-bye was :).

Not to hijack this thread (but I'm going to). I cannot remember the last time one of our QB's sold the play action well. Most look like half assed attempts that even the safety could see from 20 yards back. Is this not being coached?
I mentioned this to someone the other day when talking about how well VY was selling the fake. Our problems go back to at least the Krenzel days. All of our QB's just kind of stick the ball out in the direction of the RB, who also does a poor job of selling the fake. Nobody is fooled by it, which is the purpose of the fake to begin with.

Tressel has commented how this kid picked up the system extremely quickly, had great hands, work ethic, leadership and could pick up a blitz like a veteran. He's not one to overhype a player. MoWells will be a good one.
I HOPE I"M WRONG .. but so far, I'm less impressed with him this year than I was with PIttman last year. Could I be wrong, yes ... sure he looks fast ...

16 rushes = 42 yards against subpar teams. Not impressed .. but like I said I hope he changes my mind ...
How many carries has he had people? 5 per game or less?

Pittman's first great game was indiana which was much later in the season.
aside from the nice 13 yard run, i would like to see a vid clip of him picking up a blitzing LB, and completely flipping him over... quite frankly, the kid is special... i said it before, and i'll say it again: i would not be the least bit surprised to see him take the starting role before the end of the season...
he had a GREAT block to set up the Boeckman-Ginn TD against Miami.

Check out MoWells picking up an unblocked TE on the Ginn TD

From the Football Press Luncheon on 9/20/05....

REPORTER: Coach, Maurice Wells has gotten real close to doing some pretty fantastic stuff. He ran the option at least once or twice last week, I think as was his style from high school a little bit. Troy took the ball out to him. And also the competition, it seems like that's kind of motivated Antonio Pittman a little bit to find someone like that nipping at his heels.
TRESSEL: I think Mo Wells is going to be a good back. Every snap he gets -- I thought he had a nice little draw play in the ball game and showed good movement. I like the direction he's going and we're counting on him to help.

After a hundred carries or you can draw generalizations about a back, but Wells hasn't had that yet. I liked Crazy40s post and that it draws attention to the blocking - something we don't look at enough. Wells is not a kid who is going to bulldoze an LB and create his own hole. He needs some space and when he has had it there have been good results.

I am really down on this O right now because there are so many kids playing who have three and four years in the program and we shouldn't still be saying that they need time to come together as a unit. But I do think the OL has depth that will produce improvement as the season goes along and am optimistic that the running game in particular will improve - especially considering that Pittman and Wells do not have much time in the program.

The points on selling fakes are also valid. I was struggling in C deck to follow the ball when VY was QB. I NEVER have that problem with Troy - not so far this season. Create a little indecision in the minds of the D and it can create some serious opportunities for a kid like Mo.

Thanks for the props Oh, I also can't believe all the missed assignments by this o-line. I would like to see Rehring take Datish's spot at tackle and Have spoon give rest to whoever needs one. I think sometimes they rotate the o-line a little too much. You have to have cohesiveness and when rotating that many in there, they don't know when to come off and make the blocks.

I also agree with the pa fakes. I would think that Tressel would run the fake to the back and run with Smith or a pa off that. I like the fake option pass that we have ran, but we need to make sure someone picks up the front side backer and doesnt come free.

Now back to Wells. :)

I UNDERSTAND THAT THEY WANT TO USE TO CONVERTED FULL BACK AS A TAIL BACK BUT I THINK THEY SHOULD BE GIVE MAURICE MORE TOUCHES WITH THE FIRST TEAM OFFENSE... EVERY TIME HE GETS IN HE HAS THE SECOND STRING AND MAYBE 3RD STRING OFFENSIVE LINE IN... I WOULD LIKE TO SEE WHAT HE COULD DO WITH THE WHOLE THAT THEY GIVE ANTONIO PITTMAN... BUT I CANT HATE ON ANTONIO PITTMAN HE IS ACTUALLY DOING GOOD THIS SEASON...

I for one don't understand giving Schnitt carries unless we are on the 1 yard line. He hasn't done anything and hasn't looked good at all. Since Pittman seems to take a beating, Maurics should get a few more carries and Haw should be the 3rd back to get a couple here and there. I think we are good at RB but they need to take Schnitt out of the equation.
