RB Jaamal Berry (Transfer to Murray State)

After watching some highlights of Cal hero Jahvid Best, I began to realize that Jahvid and Jaamal have similar running styles. They are both slash backs with exceptional speed.

Let's hope Jamaal can explode in Ohio State's rushing attack.

Cal and Ohio State have fundamentally different blocking schemes. It's interesting - even though Ohio State's zone blocking attack should benefit slashers like MoWells and Jaamal Berry, we seem to have had more success with bruiser-types. In Cal's system, we take mostly slashers, but utilize a drive blocking scheme (even mostly out of the one-back), but have had great success over the last few years (Echemandu, Arrington, Lynch, Forsett, Best (and to some smaller extent Vereen who is a great #2.

Berry I believe is almost as physically talented as Best, and his running style is very reminiscent of Cal backs of late - there is no reason why Berry should not be able to put up the numbers that Best, Forsett, and Lynch had in the past 4 years.

I think I might be alone in this, but after watching him in the UA game, I was not impressed. He went down easy. Reminded me much more of Mo Wells than Stationary Bike Mike.

I think the best RB in this class is Hyde. I don't think Berry ever starts. I'll happily be wrong. Just don't see the magic y'all do. :wink2:

 If you're not alone you are real close. I think tOSU needs to become more athletic overall as a team and Berry is HUGE get. Add T.P. and the other young guys we have picked up over the past 2 years and I think we are talking about some great potential. Berry can bring an added dimension and some athletic depth we haven't had in a while and can be used in a number of different ways. I'm excited to see him on the field.

Welcome Jaamal and enjoy the Game today!

Berry faced much stronger competition in high school than Hyde. Miami-Ft. Lauderdale football is a whole nother ball game from SW Florida, Naples/Ft. Myers. Nothing against Hyde (and Hyde has proved himself in getting his team to a state championship for his class), but Berry had a subpar offensive line his junior year when he really lit up his national ranking. Give him arguably the best o-line in the NCAA, which happens to be based out of the wonderful city of Columbus, Ohio and I only see him doing more damage.

let's hope this is eventually the case instead of wishful thinking.

i think berry is going to be a very good RB for us, and a lot of the trepidation that people have about him is a result of their perception of smaller RBs (specifically mo wells). if boom has a big year next season that might change somewhat, but despite being smaller RBs, their running styles are totally different so who knows.

i also think there's a good chance hyde redshirts. berry won't.

Hyde I think has the power. If I had an all-star team of HS kids out of Florida last year, he'd be my FB for sure, and you're going to need a guy like that in the Big 10 (make that anywhere in the country).

Berry just had to do a lot more running, twisting, turning to deal with the quick defenses that exist down here Dade County. They say if you can run down here, you can run anywhere. However, there are a lot of running backs in Miami that benefit from a great o-line. Berry's line last year at Miami Palmetto was very good unlike his junior year, and most of those kids will now be seniors next year with arguably the best o-line in the county. So he had his work cut out for him while he played in high school.

I just think coming out of that background, it's tough for me to fathom how Berry doesn't perform well at the next level.
