Ezekiel Elliott Says He's Fresher than a Year Ago
After another Big Ten battle last Saturday, Ezekiel Elliott was tired. The running back had just moved into third place in Ohio State rushing history and that takes a lot out of a player.
“Very sore,” Elliott said on Wednesday of how he felt after the game. “Any time you get 27 carries – I think that’s the most I’ve had all season – you’re going to be sore after the game. So it’s important this week to get in the training room and get my body right.”
Those 27 carries tied his season high, which he has done three times in 10 games. Elliott’s also had a 26-carry game to go along with two 23’s and a 21-carry day. The fewest amount of carries the running back has in a game this season is 11, but that came back in week one.
So far this year, Elliott has 53 more carries than he did at this point a season ago and 471 yards. The difference is essentially Elliott’s production in the College Football Playoff last year.
Those extra carries are sure to put a beating on anyone’s body, but Elliott says he feels better than he did 10 games into last season.
“Actually, I think I feel more fresh than I felt at this point last year,” he said. “Last year at this point I was so beat up. I really wasn’t practicing at all and I was just kind of getting mental reps. This year, I feel better.”
As the go-to player in the Buckeyes’ run-first offense, the junior knew he was going to be called upon more than a year ago. This meant Elliott had to be smarter not only in how he plays, but also how he takes care of himself.
“I think I’ve just done a better job of just taking care of my body and taking less hits,” Elliott said.
