Boclair: By George!

By David Boclair
So Eddie George is headed to the College Football Hall of Fame.
Two outstanding seasons at Ohio State, capped by a Heisman Trophy his senior year, separated him from so many others who have played the game at that level.
It?s tough to say it?s an honor he does not deserve. It?s tougher to say whether he belongs in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
George has been out of the game for more than five seasons, and therefore, he?s eligible for induction. He did not make the list of 26 semifinalists for the 2011 class, which means he?s a long way from actually getting there.
Still, the debate over his merits is an interesting one.
Numbers don?t immediately seem to warrant his selection. He ranks 23rd on the NFL?s all-time rushing list with 10,441 yards, and it?s not as if the top 25 are surefire Hall of Famers. For nearly every Jim Brown in that group, there?s also a Corey Dillon. Yes, Marshall Faulk is among them, but so is Ricky Watters.
The thing that distinguished George during his pro career is the thing that also tainted his legacy: toughness. He is one of only two who rushed for at least 10,000 career yards (the aforementioned and unquestionably legendary Brown is the other) and started every game of his career ? in George?s case that was 142 of 142.

Eddie George takes Ohio State's offensive coordinator to task
Staff report Sporting News
It was surprising to see Ohio State?s offense held scoreless for over 59 minutes in the team?s 10-7 loss to Michigan State at the Horseshoe last weekend. Who to blame here? Former Ohio State RB Eddie George points the finger at offensive coordinator Jim Bollman, the Heisman Trophy winner said on his SiriusXM radio show, per The Columbus Dispatch.
?It appears to me that Bollman is out there, he?s totally exposed,? George said. ?It?s his offense to lose, and clearly he has no idea or concept what to do with them at this point.?

George says the team is not playing to Joe Bauserman?s strengths.
?When I was watching the (Michigan State) game and I saw Joe Bauserman trying to execute the read-option and get nowhere, there?s a problem. There?s a lack of understanding what his strengths and weaknesses are. He?s a pocket quarterback.?
George also doesn?t think freshman Braxton Miller is ready to take over, because he?s more concerned about the pass rush than finding his receivers.

COLUMBUS, Ohio --
Eddie George, the Heisman Trophy-winning tailback who holds the single season and single game rushing records for Ohio State and ranks second only to the great Archie Griffin in career yards, will be honored at halftime of Ohio State?s Oct. 28 Homecoming game against Wisconsin. The Ohio State University Department of Athletics will recognize George for his pending induction into the National Football Foundation & College Football Hall of Fame in December, and his official enshrinement this summer in South Bend, Ind.
George, who will be on the Westwood One radio national broadcast team calling the game against the Badgers, will become the 23rd Ohio State player to enter college football?s Hall of Fame. He is one of only six individuals with his name honored in lights in the north end zone of Ohio Stadium.

Heisman running back honored for induction into hall of fame

The Columbus Dispatch Sunday October 30, 2011
Eddie George took a trip down memory lane last night, and the 1995 Heisman Trophy winner felt a few goose bumps along the way.
Ohio State honored the former running back at halftime of its game against Wisconsin for his selection as a member of the 2012 class in the College Football Hall of Fame. He also provided analysis for the Westwood One radio broadcast of the game.
The mental flashback, though, was courtesy of the combination of a crisp autumn night and football in the air.
“It’s typical Big Ten weather, and it takes me back to a time when I came here for my recruiting visit (the fall of 1991), and I stood in the middle of the field and said to myself, ‘I am going to do great things in this stadium. I can feel it,’ ” George said. “And I committed to Ohio State right there on the spot.
