RB Daniel "Boom" Herron (Official Thread)

"Boom" Headlines Bowl Bound Buckeyes

Mobile, AL. (Jan. 9)?The North offense in this year?s Senior Bowl will feature a bevy of Ohio State Buckeyes. Four Ohio State seniors have officially accepted invitations to the 2012 game, it was announced today. Running back Dan ?Boom? Herron, wide receiver DeVier Posey and offensive linemen Mike Adams and Mike Brewster will represent the Buckeyes in the senior showcase event later this month. The North squad will be coached by Leslie Frazier and his Minnesota Vikings staff.

The 63rd Senior Bowl is scheduled for 3pm (CT) on Saturday, January 28th in Mobile?s Ladd-Peebles Stadium. The game and all practices will be televised by NFL Network.

?This will mark the eleventh straight year that Ohio State University has been represented in our game,? Senior Bowl President and CEO Steve Hale said. ?All four of these players are deserving of this opportunity to showcase their talents in front of the top decision makers in the National Football League.?

Herron was an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selection in 2011 despite only playing in seven games for the Buckeyes. He finished second on the team with 675 rushing yards, averaging 96.4 yards per game, and scored three touchdowns. He had three 100-yard rushing games this season and added eight receptions for 34 yards.

?I definitely am going to have a chip on my shoulder,? Herron said. ?With missing six games this year, it was definitely hard on me and with me playing in this game I feel like it can definitely help me. It?s a time for scouts to see me perform against a lot of great talent out there, so I think it?s definitely going to help me out a lot.?

For his career, ?Boom? rushed for 2,869 yards, which ranks tenth all-time in Ohio State history. He added 33 total touchdowns (32 rush., 1 rec.)?eighth-best in school history?and 44 receptions for 309 yards. He enjoyed his best season as a junior, totaling 1,155 yards on 216 carries and scoring 16 touchdowns.

?I?ve talked to a few guys who have actually played in the game and they definitely say it?s all business out there. It?s a time to go out there and show your talents, just go out there and work hard and it?s definitely a business trip,? Herron added.

Ohio State RB Dan Herron's pass protection will be an issue to watch. He did not fare well in position drills or in one-on-one matchups. Pass protection will be a vital skill for the 5-10, 205-pound Herron on the next level. Let's see if he makes some technical adjustments and shows improvement later in the week.

Former Michigan State defensive back Trenton Robinson, Ohio State running back Daniel Herron and Boise State running back Doug Martin were interviewed by the Lions this week. Detroit is conducting several interviews each night prior to Sunday's game. The Lions will continue interviewing players during next month's NFL Scouting Combine.

Former OSU running back Daniel "Boom" Herron carries the ball on Senior Day against Penn State Nov. 19, 2011, at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. OSU lost the game, 20-14.

Amoung the beaches, dining and nightlife in Mobile, Ala., there are plenty of distractions for former college football players participating in Saturday's Senior Bowl.

Former Ohio State players Mike Adams, DeVier Posey, Michael Brewster and Daniel "Boom" Herron all received invites to the annual NFL prospect showcase, and Herron said his approach to the practices leading up to the game, as well as the game itself, is strictly business.

"I've talked to a few guys who have actually played in the (Senior Bowl) and they definitely say it's all business out there," Herron said. "It's a time to go out there and show your talents, just go out there and work hard and it's definitely a business trip."

The last year could hardly be considered business as usual for the 5-foot-10, 205-pound running back.

Herron, along with former OSU quarterback Terrelle Pryor, defensive end Solomon Thomas and fellow Senior Bowl North team invitees Adams and Posey, was suspended for the first five games of the 2011 season for selling Buckeyes memorabilia in exchange for improper benefits in the form of tattoos. Herron was then suspended for an additional game after he was found to have been overcompensated by former team booster Robert DiGeronimo for work he did not complete during a summer 2011 job.

Despite the suspensions, Herron's return to action for the Buckeyes' Oct. 15 game against Illinois was business as usual.

Herron rushed for 114 yards and a touchdown in the game, eventually finishing 2011 with 675 yards and three touchdowns in seven games.

For his performance in the 2011 season, Herron received an honorable mention All-Big Ten and was named co-captain of the team after the season.

For his career, Herron ran for 2,869 yards ? the 10th-best career rushing yardage mark in program history ? and 33 touchdowns, the eighth-most for a Buckeye back.

Heading into a week's worth of Senior Bowl practices against top defensive players from around the nation, Herron said he isn't satisfied.

"I definitely am going to have a chip on my shoulder," Herron said. "With missing six games this year, it was definitely hard on me and with me playing in this game, I feel like it can definitely help me. It's a time for scouts to see me perform against a lot of great talent out there, so I think it's definitely going to help me out a lot."

Solidifying his status as a quality running back is the main goal this week, Herron said. He also wants to show his versatility.

"I want to show them how good of a running back that I am," Herron said. "How I can catch the ball out of the backfield and do all the little things that they would want to see out of a running back."

Ohio State RB Daniel "Boom" Herron is another player generating some momentum. He has impressed several RB coaches with his combination of speed, quickness and agility, and one NFC North offensive assistant cited him as the top runner in the game. I love his gritty running style, but he has been most impressive as a receiver out of the backfield. He catches the ball well with his hands, and shows surprising polish as a route runner in space. Herron will be an ideal fit in an offense that features running backs prominently in the passing game.

Mel, where do you see Boom Herron of Ohio State being drafted this year? thanks

Mel Kiper
Not having the full year impacted him negatively. Late in the year, he did do a good job. Against Wisconsin he had 33 carries for 160 yards. He can carry the ball 30 times a game. He's a good solid RB. He gets positive yardages. You could get him in the 4-5 round.

Herron, Posey ready for NFL challenge

NILES - With their college careers at an end, former Ohio State football players Dan "Boom" Herron and DeVier Posey are ready to take the next step to the National Football League.

The duo made an appearance Saturday signing autographs at Everything Buckeyes in the Eastwood Mall and both reflected back on their turbulent senior season and looked ahead on possibly being drafted by an NFL team.

Both had their senior seasons shortened due to selling memorabilia for cash and tattoos, suspended for the first five games of 2011. They had additional time added on for being overpaid on a summer job, Herron for one game and Posey for five.

The absence of Herron and Posey (as well as quarterback Terrelle Pryor, offensive lineman Mike Adams and defensive end Soloman Thomas) resulted in a 6-7 season for the Buckeyes, including losing their last four games.

"It was definitely a learning experience," said 2007 Warren G. Harding graduate Herron, who turns 23 on March 21. "I've definitely grown from it. I look at things different, make better decisions."

Herron Looks to the League -video interview

Dan "Boom" Herron went straight from the turf at Warren Harding to the Horseshoe in Columbus, but as great as his Ohio State career started, breaking NCAA rules cut about half his senior season; an obvious mistake he regrets, but also has used positively.

"Learned so much. Just making better decisions and things like that. My teammates and my family, they were there to just let me know that everything's going to be alright; just keep working. I think I've grown from that whole situation, and now I'm just trying to get better from that and move on," said Herron.

Boom's looking to move on to the NFL. He's currently training in Pensacola, Florida, gearing up for the combine at the end of the month.

"I'm one of those guys who just wants to get better at everything, working a lot on my different techniques. I just want to be an all-around back who can catch the ball out of the backfield, run the ball, play special teams, do whatever it takes for the team to win," Herron said.

Herron's reached out to a former Raider teammate who knows about winning, Super Bowl star Mario Manningham, who has passed on words of wisdom.

"Just really focus, really focus. Really work hard and just take every minute seriously and try to get better every day," said Herron.

The man at OSU who helped get better as a freshman is also a guy who's helping him prep for the NFL, Chris Wells.

"Beanie, who was one of my best friends, talk to him once or twice a week; sometimes more than that a week. He gives me all the great advice and all the past players, they always give us a call and give us great advice. So I have great people in my corner," Herron said.

And if asked why Dan "Boom" Herron should be in an NFL team's corner, he's got the answer.

"Great player and leader, leader on and off the field. A player who loves to win and loves to do the right thing and win games," stated Herron.
