Herron: I?ve learned from mistakes, still support Tressel

WARREN - Change has come to Ohio State's football program during this offseason, and most of it wasn't exactly welcomed by the Buckeyes.
Coach Jim Tressel resigned on Memorial Day and quarterback Terrelle Pryor announced a week later that he would not return for his senior season.
Even after those bombshells, the Buckeyes are still very much in a state of flux as almost daily revelations about possible NCAA violations pile up. A date with the NCAA awaits Ohio State in August, when the university should learn the extent of impending sanctions.
But Buckeyes tailback Daniel "Boom" Herron - a Warren G. Harding High School graduate and one of the players involved in what became known as "Tattoo-gate" - said Monday he and his teammates will approach the 2011 season the way Ohio State always did in Tressel's 10 seasons in Columbus.
"I still have the same mindset I had right after the bowl game - just come back, work hard and try to win a national championship," Herron said. "We still have a great coaching staff. Losing coach Tressel is a big thing, but I think we can can all pull together and do this."

No. 80: Ohio State RB Dan Herron
THE PARTICULARS: 5-10/205, Sr.; Warren (Ohio) Warren Harding
THE BUZZ: Built low to the ground, 'Boom' Herron is a blue-collar runner with a nose for the end zone. Equally adept at running between the tackles and around the end, Herron will be one of the Big Ten?s top backs but must sit out the first five games for violating NCAA rules. He?ll look to pick up where he left off last season, when Herron had 1,155 rushing yards and 16 TDs He also caught 19 passes for 180 yards.

Herron?s Return Could Help Fill Leadership Void
By Brandon Castel
COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Spend 10 minutes at an Ohio State football practice and the one sound that will rise above the clamor is the booming voice of running back Daniel Herron.
Whether it is joking with a teammate on offense, coaching up a young running back or barking at the defense, Herron?s voice resonates over the buzz of bodies flying around, the smack of pads hitting each other and even the echo of coaches barking out instruction.
?He?s definitely a vocal guy,? center Michael Brewster said.
?That?s his nature and it?s great to get him back from scout team and back in the huddle with us more often.?
The son of a preacher, Herron has always been a fiery guy, but the fifth-year senior might just be the best vocal leader on the Buckeyes this season. Unfortunately, he hasn?t actually been ?on the field? yet, at least not on game days.
Herron has been suspended for the first six games of the year, which has left the Buckeyes without much vocal leadership in the huddle during their 3-3 start.
?There's not someone who just stands out and says, ?you know, I'm the leader of this team,? kind of taking over,? said senior linebacker Tony Jackson, who plays primarily on special teams.
?That's not what we have this year. We have it's more of a collective group.?

Football: Ohio State gets Herron back
Tailback will be eased back into action at Illinois
By Tim May
The Columbus Dispatch Saturday October 15, 2011
Mike Munden | DISPATCH
Daniel Herron, a 1,000-yard rusher last season, missed the first six games this year because of two suspensions.
The forecast for Champaign, Ill., this afternoon calls for temperatures in the low 60s with winds out of the west up to 25 mph, conditions favorable for running the ball.
That bodes well for Ohio State, which will get tailback Daniel Herron back when the Buckeyes play at unbeaten Illinois. The senior spent the first five games on suspension for receiving improper benefits in the tattoo scandal, then sat out last week?s loss at Nebraska after the NCAA determined he had been overpaid on a part-time job.
Just how he will fit into the tailback rotation is the question. Sophomore Carlos Hyde has excelled in recent weeks, including his first 100-yard game last week at Nebraska. And Jordan Hall has been a versatile performer.
But there?s no doubt Herron will play, coach Luke Fickell said. He referred to the leadership Herron showed during the suspension and how that was missed on the field and the sideline in the first six games
?His personality, his passion, his confidence level ? that?s something that we are going to try and ride,? Fickell said. ?And in order to do that, he?s going to have to have a hand in it and have a part of it, and he will.?
