Ohio State commitment Chris Wells is arguably the best running back prospect in the country but he’s not the only Ohioan that can carry the football. Anthony Elzy, Delone Carter and Lance Smith are all solid ball carries. However, that is not the only position of strength for Ohio according to Chris Pool, Midwest recruiting analyst.

From Connor Smith and Justin Boren to Bill Nagy and Bob Gulley, there are several road graders with scholarship offers," says Pool. "The two biggest movers in Ohio are Hudson (Western Reserve Academy) tight end Brendan Mitchell, the son of former Michigan wide receiver, Alan Mitchell and Cincinnati (Colerain) linebacker Tyler Moeller. Big Ten recruiters are calling Moeller the most aggressive outside linebacker in the Midwest."

Garfield won't go to Wells too often
Friday, August 12, 2005
From staff reports
Don't look for Akron Garfield running back Chris Wells to get an abundance of carries during the Rams' scrimmages.

The Rams go against visiting Youngstown Chaney on Tuesday at 5 p.m. and Canal Fulton Northwest at 10 a.m. Friday at the Rubber Bowl.

It's not that Garfield coach Bob Sax is trying to protect his star.

"We know what Chris can do," said Sax, who plans on using the scrimmages to evaluate senior Cortez Jones, sophomore Marcus Davis and others. "Chris will play on both sides of the ball and he will work on his blocking, but I see no sense in having him run the ball 20-25 times."

Wells, who has committed to Ohio State and is regarded as the nation's best running back by several publications, has rushed for 3,098 yards in three seasons.

He's not going to plummet based on not getting reps at a scrimmage. I would expect his rating to stay pretty high, as this kid is going to have an instant impact at OSU, and they want to look as good at possible once that happens. For comparisons, see Sanchez, who seems like the next great QB at USC, but committed somewhat early.

The kid has been hailed as an elite back by every recruiting publication, and tons of ones that just throw in occasional recruiting tidbits (like SI). Maybe he'll slip 5-10 spots. But there's no way he loses his 5-star status. Not that it matters anyway... someone forgot to tell Holmes that 3-star ratings are bad karma.

It's just scrimages, big deal, he will still thrash every team he plays against once the season starts. The coach obviously wants to get some other players some experience. There is such a thing as injuries. He'll get every hand-off in every game until it's out of reach. Why make such a big deal over nothing? That's a Bucknuts knee-jerk reaction.
