Garfield easily handled Firestone 42-6 in a City Series game on a Saturday afternoon that was rainy enough to turn Kenmore's field into a brown-green Slip 'n Slide. Senior back Chris Wells led the way, scoring all four of the Rams' first-half touchdowns.
In a typical performance by the 6-foot-2, 240-pound Ohio State recruit, Wells rushed for 131 yards on 10 carries. All the Falcons could do was hurl tacklers at Wells, who sometimes would drag two or three along for lengthy rides. In the first two of Wells' four rushing touchdowns, he barrelled through defenders. In the last two, he broke free for 36 and then 27 yards, respectively, while leaving no chance of anyone catching him.
In the first half, the Rams had a 100 percent third-down conversion rate, but that was mostly due to the fact that they had to go on third down just once.
``The weather was terrible so we figured we'd get in the old T and run the ball,'' Garfield coach Bob Sax said.
Rams (3-4, 2-1) senior halfback Cortez Jones added a third-quarter touchdown, and had 112 yards on eight carries on the day.
``I was real happy with the offense as a whole, our line had a good time picking up their blocks, and Cortez did a nice job of balancing out Chris,'' Sax said.
In addition to his 6-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, Jones also had a brilliant punt-return touchdown that was called back on a penalty.
Rams quarterback Kyle Shaffer optioned right and reached the end zone on a 12-yard run in the third quarter.
The Falcons (0-7, 0-3) went to the air on several plays and found success in the fourth quarter on a 27-yard touchdown catch by senior running back Avery McCullough on a pass from Alexander Paul.
Sax said he expects that Wells, whose production is already up in the 1,300-yard range, will keep scoring. But he's not counting out Jones, who averaged a team-best 14 yards per carry, from making a difference.
