RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

BEANIE MEETING WITH STEELERS
Running back Chris ?Beanie? Wells could have a chance to resurrect his once promising NFL career in Pittsburgh.

On his Twitter account (@BeanieWells26), Wells confirmed that he was heading to meet with Steelers officials.

A 2009 first-round draft pick by Arizona, Wells has battled injuries throughout his four-year NFL career. He was released earlier this week by the Cardinals. His best season came in 2011 with a 1,047-yard rushing campaign with 10 touchdowns.

If signed, the 24-year-old Wells could potentially become a Steelers starter. Ex-Steelers starter Rashard Mendenhall signed earlier this week with Arizona.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette first reported that Wells was meeting Thursday with the Steelers. -- Alex Marvez

Man, I always thought Beanie was a surefire future All-Pro...big, fast...just a beast and workhorse his first two years in Columbus. I expected him to have an Eddie George kind of career in the NFL. Something happened to him in 2008, though. He's never really been the same since. I can't believe he's only 24. He's still young, so there's time to turn it around, but he seems like one of those guys that can never really stay (or get) fully healthy.

There is no "sure thing" when it comes to running backs in the NFL:

"The shortest careers among NFL players tends to be those who hit and get hit the most during games and practice. Running backs have the shortest average careers of just 2.57 years".

So far he's been in the league 4 years, he's already beat the average.

Report: Jaguars bring in RB Beanie Wells for workout
By John Breech | CBSSports.com
June 6, 2013

The Jaguars reportedly worked out former Cardinals running back Beanie Wells on Thursday. (USATSI) The Jaguars reportedly worked out former Cardinals running back Beanie Wells on Thursday. (USATSI)

Former Arizona Cardinals running back Beanie Wells has resurfaced. Wells, who worked out for the Pittsburgh Steelers in March and hadn't really been heard from since, worked out for the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday, according to Jacksonville's Florida Times-Union.

With Maurice Jones-Drew still recovering from December foot surgery and also possibly facing legal issues, it makes sense that the Jaguars are looking to add depth at running back. MJD's foot problem limited him to only six games in 2012.

Wells, who was released by the Cardinals in early March, has dealt with injury issues of his own. Thanks to a lingering toe injury last year, the former first-round pick played in only eight games for the Cardinals. Despite the brief playing time, Wells still led Arizona in rushing touchdowns last season with five.

New Jaguars coach Gus Bradley is somewhat familiar with Wells. He was a defensive coordinator for the Seahawks 2009-12, and his defense faced Wells and the Cardinals five times. In those games, Wells totaled 200 yards on 55 carries and three touchdowns.

If Wells were to end up in Jacksonville, he'd compete for snaps with veteran Justin Forsett and rookie Denard Robinson. With Jones-Drew not participating in OTA's, Forsett has been taking most of the reps with the first team.
