RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

Beanie Wells looking to audition for 'the 31 other teams that's watching'

Beanie Wells, left, certainly doesn't feel like celebrating these days.

After another disappointing season in which he averaged 2.7 yards per carry but still managed five touchdowns in eight games, Cardinals running back Beanie Wells is looking to the future -- a future that doesn't include Arizona.
That's why he's looking at Sunday's season finale against the 49ers as an audition for the rest of the league.
?That's my mind-set,? Wells said, via the Arizona Republic. ?I'm just going to go out there and put my best foot forward for all the 31 other teams that's watching.?

Good. Shouldn't have opened his mouth.

Yep. Not smart at all. If I'm the Cardinals I would've benched him.

Beanie did himself no favors today. Those other 31 teams saw what he said, too.

Well if he was told he wouldnt be retained after this season, who cares what he says? The Cardinals know they were going to release him, so they are just benching him because he understood he was going to be let go and was vocal about looking for his next employer? Thats some cry-baby bullcrap.

Why is it okay for a coach to go take interviews with other teams while still remaining a current HC, but its frowned upon for a player to voice that he is looking at other teams for his future?

Beanie will get a chance but he's only a two down back and not very sturdy..he'll have to be on a team with multiple backs so his options will be limited. Coming out of HS the sky was the limit but injuries have left him a shell of what he was at tOSU.

Whether Beanie is justified in speaking up and whether it's wise for him to do so are two entirely different questions.

Finale? Arizona Cardinals? Beanie Wells sits on sidelines
Running back benched after ?audition? remarks

SAN FRANCISCO -- The audition Beanie Wells spoke about last week never materialized. On the final Sunday of the 2012 regular season, the Cardinals running back never left the sideline. His uniform stayed clean.

Surprised?

?Yeah, I was a little,? Wells said after the Cardinals fell 27-13 to the 49ers at Candlestick Park. ?But it is what it is. It was coach (Ken Whisenhunt?s) decision.?

This could be it for Wells in Arizona, the final page of an underwhelming career in the desert. Even though he?s under contract through the 2013 season, the running back?s relationship with the team may be beyond repair. In a Dec. 23 loss to the Bears, Whisenhunt benched Wells after a first-quarter fumble near the goal line.

A day later, Wells told reporters he expected to be released or traded in the off-season.

?Oh, without a doubt,? he had said when asked if his days were numbered in Arizona. Then he said he planned to use Sunday?s contest against San Francisco as an ?audition for a job somewhere else.?

Perhaps teams around the NFL took note of his body language.

For what it?s worth, Whisenhunt said Wells? benching had more to do with scheme than anything else.

?I just felt we were mixing so much sub-package in there today going against these guys that Beanie hasn?t been a big part of that particular package of our offense,? he said. ?And the way (William Powell) was running it early, I just felt like he was going at a clip, and we wanted to stay with that.?

Powell rushed 14 times for 52 yards.

?I would like to be back playing in Arizona,? Wells said, sitting in a cramped locker room. ?I like living here. My family lives near here, but who knows how things are going to unfold??

When questioned about last week?s comments, Wells didn?t back off.

?I never said I was ready to get out,? he said. ?I was just saying what I expected.?

Beanie Wells seeks second chance with Bruce Arians
By Chris Wesseling
Published: Jan. 25, 2013

Beanie Wells' future with the Arizona Cardinals has been in doubt since declaring in December that he was auditioning for the other 31 teams in the league. Now that Bruce Arians has taken the reins, though, the Cardinals running back is excited about starting fresh under a new coaching staff.

Wells concedes that 2012 was a difficult season, due in large part to the dissonance between himself and ex-coach Ken Whisenhunt. "We definitely had our fair share of disagreements this season, and I've never been in a situation like that before," Wells explained. "I respect coach Whiz a ton and I wish him all the best, but we didn't see eye to eye on some things, and I don't know what sparked it."

It's not difficult to hazard a guess on that spark. Wells let it be known that the final few games would be a showcase to help him "get film out there." Instead, he was benched for fumbling in Week 16. "I didn't agree with it all," Wells said at the time.

Wells ended up following Matt Leinart, Tim Hightower, John Skelton, and Todd Heap in the line of veterans banished to Whisenhunt's doghouse after falling out of favor. He may not fair much better under Arians, who ignored Wells while showering Ryan Williams with love at his introductory press conference.

Beanie Wells triggered an escalator in his rookie deal, raising his 2013 salary from $1,157,500 to $1,407,500.
It's not a massive increase by any means, but with Wells' salary increasing and skills decreasing, it makes it easier for the Cardinals to cut ties with him. Wells toted the rock 88 times for just 234 yards (2.7 YPC) and five touchdowns in 2012, a year after rumbling for 1,047 yards and ten scores. Wells is entering the final year of his contract. Jan 30

Thoughts on Beanie and Ryan Williams
Posted by Darren Urban on February 21, 2013

Both Steve Keim and Bruce Arians talked about the Cardinals? top two running backs today. As you can imagine, injuries were at the center of their analysis with both Beanie Wells and Ryan Williams.

?I think Beanie had a tough stretch this year because of the injuries,? Keim said. ?He showed a lot of grit, a lot of toughness late in the year when he was able to. Some of the lower extremity injuries, his ankles, his knees, his feet, he?s had a tough time with his cut ability and his lateral movement. But Beanie is still a big horse who can finish runs and create yardage after contact, which is something that excites us.?

Arians didn?t get around to Wells, and it would still seem that Beanie?s future ? even though his salary is a manageable $1.4 million this season (assuming he is a main back) ? is up in the air. He still remains a work-in-progress as a pass protector, and that is a prerequisite for Arians. As for Williams, there is something to work with ? as long as he can get on the field. Keim spoke generally a couple of times about availability being as important as ability and that certainly applies to the 2011 second-round pick.

Former Buckeye RB Beanie Wells (@BeanieWells26) has just announced that the Arizona Cardinals are releasing him today.

Somewhat a surprise, but not a complete shock. As a Beanie fan, i hope he catches on somewhere else and reaches full potential. As a Cardinals fan, hopefully they can find a dependable back.

Hopefully he can stay healthy and find a good place, needs to go to a place that has a speed back in place and desperate need of a power back

If it weren't for the salary cap issues, Redskins would be a great fit. Morris for the speed burst, and Wells to pound it.
