RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

Beanie Wells, Cardinals RB. Listing Wells in this spot guarantees I'll receive a mocking e-mail from Seifert stemming from our 2009 debate about whether Wells or the Vikings' Percy Harvin would prevail as rookie of the year. It's still not clear how many carries Wells will share with Tim Hightower, but multiple important factors point to a big year from Wells. The Cardinals should become less pass-happy without Kurt Warner and Anquan Boldin. Their personnel almost assures more prominence for the ground game. Wells had 176 carries for 793 yards and seven touchdowns last season. Give him 300 carries and the other categories project to 1,351 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. Arizona drafted Wells in the first round. Time to give him the ball.

I think Hightower starting can send a message.

I clicked on the link to see if the author elaborated on this, but there's nothing. I can't help but think that the message is weak. IF Beanie is a better RB than Hightower; then does that mean that Beanie is less of a person somehow? Would have been helpful to get an explanation.

Only message I can think of that needs to be sent to Beanie is to watch the fumbles.

But Hightower struggled with fumbles last year too, so that message is even unclear.

I don't get what message it would be. Hightower is probably running with the first-time offense because he's a better blocker. He sure as hell isn't a better running back.

The message isn't to Beanie. Hightower is probably the hardest worker on the team. By keeping him installed as starter I guess it promotes hard work amongst the other guys.

Beanie will get more carries this year. I wouldn't worry about who the "starter" is.

Beanie Wells: ?I want to be the top back in the league this year"
By Sports Radio Interviews

When he was at Ohio State, the two biggest knocks against Beanie Wells were that he fumbled far too often and he was injury prone. Well, after being the third running back selected in the 2009 NFL Draft, Beanie came to Arizona last season with a chip on his shoulder looking to prove the doubters wrong. However, both of those issues showed up right away and because of that Wells didn?t have the kind of immediate impact he was looking for and lost carries to Tim Hightower. It wasn?t until the end of the season that Wells finally got his chance and ran with it. He finished with over 700 yards rushing, he averaged 4.5 yards per carry, found the end zone seven times, and made people forget about Tim Hightower in the desert. Now, as the 2010 season approaches and the Cardinals move on without Kurt Warner, I expect the former Ohio State star to have his breakout season one year later than expected and apparently he does too if you listen to the interview.

Beanie Wells joined KTAR in Phoenix with Doug and Wolf to talk about what he learned last year, what his goals are for this year, and how much confidence he has in Matt Leinart.

On what he thinks he has improved on from last year:

?Um, for the most part, it?s not physical, so you have to improve on the little things like my quickness. I definitely think I?m a lot quicker. I feel a lot faster, plan to lose more weight, get quicker and more explosive, and it allows me to be more comfortable with the plays. That?s something I wasn?t last year until later in the season and even then I wasn?t that comfortable because I still had a sense of reassurance. I had to have that sense of reassurance out there on the football field. Now I?m completely comfortable and I know what I?m doing. I think now I can just go out there and play full speed without thinking. That?s the most important part of the game to be able to go out there and play the game without thinking because if you run with a heavy head, your legs are gonna be heavier. I?m out there running a lot lighter.?

RB ? Tim Hightower. Ahh, the most ?controversial? of the starting calls. Will I be shocked if Beanie Wells is starting in St. Louis? No. Could Hightower start Game One and then have Wells move in? Sure. Might they stay Hightower-Wells all season as last year? Yes. Have I mentioned before it doesn?t matter? I am feeling pretty good in saying Beanie will have more carries and be the leading rusher. The other details are window dressing.

Wells was offered scholarships by big-time football schools such as Michigan and USC, but Wells said ?I think I came out of my mother?s womb wanting to go to Ohio State.?

?I had committed to USC, but by the time that plane landed, I de-committed to USC and I knew I was going to Ohio State,? he said.

?I was sad and excited at the same time to leave OSU,? he said. ?I loved being a Buckeye, I still am a Buckeye even though I?ve moved on to the NFL. There?s nothing like running out of that tunnel at ?The Horseshoe? (nickname for Ohio Stadium) in front of 105,000 fans. There?s nothing like playing in the Michigan game, especially my freshman year when it was No. 1 vs. No. 2. But it was definitely a dream to play in the NFL, and I want to make the most of that opportunity I have right now.?

Blimpie Goes Running Back To Catch Up To Subway For 'Lighter Stuff' Debut
Monday, July 19, 2010

ChrsWellsBlmpAd.jpeg

July 10, 2010: Subway has relied heavily on sports figures to tout its foot-long sub sandwiches and low-fat "healthy options" menu, including Michael Phelps, Michael Strahan, CC Sabathia, Laila Ali, Blake Griffin and Nastia Liukin.

Rival Blimpie is just now introducing what it calls "The Lighter Stuff," a six-item menu line "encouraging healthy, active lifestyles." To get the word out to consumers, the Scottsdale, Az.-based chain has called upon Chris "Beanie" Wells, now in his second season with the NFL's Arizona Cardinals, to appear in national marketing.

Wells, a running back who rushed for nearly 800 yards during his rookie season in 2009, will appear in marketing and act as a spokesman, ala Subway's Jared Fogle and that chain's roster of athletes. Blimpie has very infrequently used athletes as spokespersons but did star Nascar driver Jeff Gordon in Blimpie marketing in 2005.

?Being a professional athlete, nutritious, wholesome meals are an important part of my daily routine,? Wells said in a statement. ?Now with The Lighter Stuff menu, Blimpie has made it even easier and tastier for me to stay on point with my health and fitness goals."
