RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

MililaniBuckeye;1627121; said:
No where did I say the Cardinals need to significantly alter their offensive schema...they just need to have Beanie as the starting RB, and use him a tad more often, especially when the situation dictates (e.g., when leading in the fourth quarter and not throwing on first, second, and third downs).

Prime example from yesterday's game:

  1. 1st & G from STL 3 (:27) 13-K.Warner pass incomplete short right to 15-S.Breaston.
  2. 2nd & G from STL 3 (:24) 13-K.Warner pass short left to 81-A.Boldin to SL 1 for 2 yards (31-J.King).
  3. Timeout #3 by ARZ at 00:16.
  4. 3rd & G from STL 1 (:16) 13-K.Warner pass incomplete short right to 11-L.Fitzgerald.
  5. 4th & G from STL 1 (:13) 12-M.Nugent 19 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-82-M.Leach, Holder-5-B.Graham.

Rookie Focus: Beanie Wells a big piece of Cardinals' puzzle

Beanie Wells led the Cardinals with 793 rushing yards this season.

Chris Wells was called "Beanie" by his older brother, Ray, because he resembled a string bean when he was growing up.

As one of 11 children ? six boys, five girls ? Wells decided the smartest course of action was to live with the nickname. It stuck, even if it no longer applies.

His rugged build and his ability to pick up hard yards led the Arizona Cardinals to draft him 31st overall, and he's making an impact for the defending NFC champions. He had 793 rushing yards (on 176 carries, a healthy 4.5-yard average) and seven touchdowns in helping the Cardinals (10-6) to retain their crown in the NFC West.

Wells' seven scores paced all rookie rushers; he trailed only the Denver Broncos' Knowshon Moreno in rushing attempts and yards. Moreno carried 247 times for 947 yards.

USA TODAY takes a closer look at Wells, whose Cardinals host the Green Bay Packers on Sunday in an NFC wild-card matchup:

THE PLAYER

? Ht.: 6-1 Wt.: 228 .

? Hometown: Akron, Ohio

? College highlights: Carried 585 times for 3,382 yards and 30 touchdowns in three-year Ohio State career. Ranks fourth in school history in rushing yards. With 17 100-yard games, tied Keith Byars for third on all-time list. Piled up 1,197 yards on the ground as a junior despite missing two games with a foot injury.

? Scouting report: Strong inside runner who is extremely difficult for one defender to bring down. Excels at producing yards after contact. Difficult to overtake in the open field. Durability and toughness were questioned before draft. Must work at pass protection and becoming more of a factor in passing game.

? Quotable: "We've seen what he can do with the ball in his hands ... He just has to continue to improve on the little things, continue to become more well-rounded as far as the passing game and picking things up. That's going to make him even more effective." ?Cardinals QB Kurt Warner

THE PERSON

? First realized in NFL when: "We had a preseason game in Denver. I was talking to coach Whisenhunt and I said, 'I can't believe I'm here in this stadium.' "

? Best advice: "My father (James) told me, 'Don't try to overdo anything. Don't go out and try to be a superstar right away. Just have fun.' "

? Role model: "My parents (Paulette and James). I watched their hard work and dedication to us, raising 11 kids."

? Big household: "Something was always going on in the house, a window gets broken or somebody is not doing his homework."

? Ohio State career: "One of the funnest times of my life. Off the field, it's an incredible experience. The students and the fan base there is so great. On the field, it's unbelievable to play in that environment every week."

? Kurt Warner: "He's a great leader. You can definitely tell his passion for the game. He's a great competitor."

? Life after football: "I definitely want to get into teaching. It's something I always wanted to get into. My mother was a teacher (in elementary school) and I've seen the impact she had on kids."

? NFL dream: "I played for 10 years in the NFL and I was eventually a Hall of Famer. Most importantly, that I was a winner."

Hauling the Rock: Arizona?s Wells Gets a Grip on His Game

Beanie Wells was greeted by teammates after scoring one of his seven regular-season touchdowns. He averages 4.5 yards a carry.

TEMPE, Ariz. ? In his second N.F.L. game, Arizona running back Beanie Wells fumbled twice against the Jaguars, resulting in one turnover. The Cardinals escaped Jacksonville with a victory in September, but Wells was not off the hook. At practice the next week, safety Adrian Wilson scribbled Wells?s name on a football and made him tote it around while his teammates tried to strip it.

The exercise reminded Wells of a high school home economics class in which he was assigned to carry an egg everywhere as if it were a baby. ?It was silly,? Wells said Friday, ?and it didn?t work.?

As the middle child of 11, including five foster children adopted by his parents, who have since divorced, Wells is accustomed to shouldering a heavy load. When it comes to his responsibilities, he prides himself on not dropping the ball.

In early-season phone calls to his mother, Paulette, who was home in Akron, Ohio, Wells, 21, sounded homesick and a little lost. For the first time, he was outside the shelter of his family?s warm embrace. His mother offered encouragement and preached patience. His time would come, she said, and so it has.
When the Cardinals drafted Wells at No. 31 over all in April, he and his mother exchanged mournful looks. ?My heart just crumbled,? Pauline Wells said.

After a productive career at Ohio State, Wells expected to go higher, possibly in the top 10. His mother expected him to play somewhere closer, preferably Cincinnati or Cleveland.

Almost every weekend during Wells?s three years in Columbus, his mother made the 1-hour-45-minute trip from Akron to visit him. ?And now I?m a 30-something-hour drive away from home,? Wells said. ?It?s definitely a difference.?

In a typical short pregame montage of the teams' star players they showed Rodgers, Grant, Driver, Warner, Fitz, and Beanie... Glad to see he's garnering the attention of the media. Hopefully he'll make a statement today.
