RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

The article writer omitted one of the biggest positives for early commitments, one which obviously helps both the individual who commits and the team to whom he is committing: Recruitment. The earlier a player KNOWS which direction he is going, the earlier he should commit. Then, he can play an active role in controlling his future prospects on a successful team by contacting other players with whom he would like to play (obviously culled from a group of those targetted by the coaching staff) and try to persuade them to join him in what can become something great. Anyone who follows recruiting knows this. Even though we lost him due to other circumstances, our verbal committment from Kevin Bemoll last year should be a prime example of this phenomenon at work.

Let's hope Chris can take this class into his own hands and persuade a stud or two to join him in Columbus.

Thus Quoth BuckeyeFromsCUM: Have we officially ushered in a new era where responsible journalism is not only passe but frowned upon for its lack of potential in ratings?
Yep - and Nope.

We were already there a fair time ago. We are however, certainly in that age.

Shame this type of nonsense has to be foisted off onto the public - let alone a kid who is making (very) good for himself.

To those journalists looking to milk column inches from each sneeze and twitch Chris Wells has between now and '06 NLOID -- Let Chris sleep Well at night fellas! He's not part of your recruiting soap opera drama game anymore - instead, he is of his own volition part of our beloved Buckeyes.

Don't forget how important it is to his HS teammates that he is totally concentrated on winning the state championship with them.

I can't believe anyone would think that Wells will not be a Buckeye especially because in an article I read, he said that he was going to help OSU with recruiting and try to get some guys to come to tOSU. That being said, there is no way he would recruit for OSU, and then go to another school... it just wouldn't make sense

This makes me feel 100% positive Chris will be wearing Scarlet and Gray in 2007

No one was saying that Wells was wavering or anything like that. The point was that the guy who wrote the article should spend more time praising Chris for being such a fine athlete and garnering such early offers rather than pointing out the flaws with the timing of the decision he made. But hey, that's journalism...

I was never once even the slightest bit concerned about Worthington. Same goes for Wells...he is 100% Buckeye.

The article doesnt condemn Wells for the early decision but it points out many things that give us and possibly Chris Wells pause. We want it to be over with him. We want him to recruit others to come to OSU like Schoenhoft and Zwick did. However, the writer makes it seem juvenile and early for someone to already commit. He does not point out the positive merits of the this. He does not state that Wells will no longer have a barage of coaches, internet gurus and reporters calling him on a daily basis.

This writer needs a player of this calibur to focus on.They don't come aroung Akron every single year; at least not players that are this nationally hyped. He wants to get inside with Chris so he can have a scoop on LOI day. He wants to be someone who can be an insider, a trusted member of team Wells. He is stirring the pot and trying to gain some noteriety in the process. It is a shame but most media is this way today.

Hell, his name even sounds like a true buckeye running back.

Thanks for the link FKA. I loved the following comment:

” It didn’t hurt that Chris’s mother, Paulette, was consistent in her interest in seeing Chris at OSU. During several reports she stated that she wanted to see Chris play, so the college had to be close to home, and she felt that Ohio kids should stay in Ohio.
What a wonderful woman Chris's mother is!

Gosh I love that she pulled the "Ohio kids stay in Ohio' card. Is it against NCAA violations to have Mrs. Wells start using her clout as Chris' mother and start swaying other Ohio mothers (Boren, etc)? Any woman that can bring a beast like this into the world and raise him to be a good kid has to have one commanding presence

On a different note, has anyone ever heard of a statistic tracking which state retains more of its top players? It seems like we'd have a pretty good shot at this statistic... I guess top players is very subjective, so its hard to track something like this, but I don't think any other state can claim they keep as much talent as we do.
