RB Chris "Beanie" Wells (All B1G, All-American)

I respect Wells played with Pittman, and Antonio was a great back without a doubt, but reading those four names together ... my first thought was that little jingle from Sesame Street, "One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just doesn't belong!"

I thought the same thing, but then again, they (Wells and Pittman) were very close. Pittman *mentored* Wells. They were also roommate, no?

So I think Beanie is just giving props to his "big brother". Nothing wrong with that...

Had Pitt stayed for his senior year without Beanie taking some of his carries, he may well have been deserved of inclusion in that group. I think he's one of the more underrated Buckeyes of all-time. He just happened to be overshadowed by a lot of stars.

As far as Beanie going pro, if he does win the Heisman and is a guaranteed Top-10 or Top-5 pick, I have a hard time believing JT wouldn't tell him to go get paid. With Boom and Zoom, we'll still be in pretty damn good shape too.

Beanie is probably the best Runningback in the Nation this year. I know some people (especially most SEC fans) will say Knowshon Moreno, and I know he is a fantastic back. But Caleb King, another runningback on Georgia's team may be even better, so it's hard to call Kno-Mo the best back in the Nation, for me anyways.

You guys seem to always have great backs though, and we can't seem to find one since Freddy T. Graham was good but nothing special. I expect around 1,800 yards and 15-20 Touchdowns for Wells this season. Should have a great season.

Florida has all the "speed players"; so it's only fair that Ohio has all the great running backs.

I don't know if we have a GREAT runningback on our team this year, but between Moore, Moody, Rainey, Williams, James, and Demps (who just recently rain a 10.17 100 meter), we should have enough backs to get some serious production from the runningback position this year.

If I had to guess, I would say Moore or Moody will start and get around 10 carries but also Rainey will get 10-15 touches whether it's on the ground or through the air, because he can catch the ball.

But it would be nice to have one back that could carry the load (and hold onto the ball).

A Steve Markey article in the Blade

2007 was good but not good enough for Wells

At a place where the premium running backs have been a parade, not a rarity - Archie Griffin, Eddie George, Keith Byars, Antonio Pittman, Robert Smith - Wells put up the best sophomore numbers in Buckeyes' history - period. He had 1,609 rushing yards, scored 16 touchdowns, and tortured the opposition to the tune of 5.9 yards per carry.

From all indications though it sounds as though Beanie doesn't want the money (yet). He's got his eye on one thing, and they don't hang the names/numbers of juniors who left early to get the biggest signing bonus in the Ring of Honor.

Kids like Beanie get insurance against potential injury. You look at some situations like what happened with Willis McGahee, with modern sports medicine these players can come back from some pretty gruesome injuries in one year, and/or will get drafted high regardless just on potential. Beanie will get his money regardless if it's in April '09 or April '10. You only get one chance to play college ball, though.

Spring Football Player Profile: Chris 'Beanie' Wells Courtesy: OhioStateBuckeyes.com

Release: 04/05/2008

[...]

The inevitable junior season. It's the year in many collegiate football players' lives to make that one decision that will affect their entire future.

Following the 2007 season, a total of 53 athletes made that life-changing decision to leave college a year early and declare for the National Football League draft. However, for one member of the Ohio State football team, the decision that looms in the future isn't a hard one to make.

"In order for me to be the best running back I can be, I have to stay here for four years," Chris 'Beanie' Wells said. "It is not going to be my last year at Ohio State."

[...]

With a resume that is continually being dressed to impress, speculation of his future is and will always be a constant. However, Wells remains firmly focused on the season ahead and the goals of the team.

"Playing football at Ohio State is the kind of experience that I will never get again," Wells said. "I want to do what is best for the team. We want to win a national championship and I will do what is needed to help my team win."

You just have to love his drive. While 99% of me would love nothing more than to see Beanie back for the 09 campaign, the other 1% says I want to see the Buckeyes break the record for first round draft picks from a single school.

What scares me (or should I say, the opposition) is that he knows his body the best, and Beanie states he was at "70%". Fuck that, I would not want to be the one trying to tackle him. I just can't image this kid at %100 though. What would that be like? - 8 ypc and 25 TD's?

Beanie is probably the best Runningback in the Nation this year.

Beanie is hands down the most talented Football player next year, just not only at running back. Moreno is good, so is Devine from WVU, Sam Bradford, and a slew of others are also great. However, when I look at moreno for example he has vision and speed much like beanie does, but he doesn't have the ability to play power football. Now i'm not sayin you have to be able to play power football in order to be the best, but IMO beanie is the most complete football player in the nation.

The speed, vision, moves, agility, and strength beanie has is an unmatchable combo. For example Devine from WVU certainly has beanie is speed but what about the rest of the attributes that beanie presents? Yes, I'm a huge buckeye fan but I think questions wether he is the best running back is craziness. The guy is 230ish can outrun any defense if given the shot, he can go through a defense, he can go around a defense, or weave in and out of traffic. Whoever has the #1 pick next year would be crazy not to pick beanie because this type of a talent doesn't come around very often. Next year with a healthy beanie we should see even more out of him that we didn't get to see this year and that has to scare the opposing offenses.

On him leaving after next year... I heard on here that he wants to stay all 4 years and if he does man he's hands down the #1 pick whenever he comes out wether next year or in 2 years. However, if he has one injury next year I hope he leaves because this kid deserves what his future beholds.

Sam Bradford

Last I checked bud, Bradford was QB .... or perhaps he's just that good to switch positions?

Beanie is a running back, plain and simple. Devine is a half back (spread option back) try to have him line up in the 'I' or a single back formation and power ahead. It wont happen because he can't run in between tackles and shed would-be defenders.

I will agree, beanie is more complete player without question in the list you've mentioned.

looks like more of a linebacker than a tailback to me. didn't seem to be the natural tailback, i don't know if it was the instincts or a bad game or a good defense or what but i thought linebacker despite something like 120 yards when i saw him.

delbert ferguson seemed like a better tailback junior year compared to junior year.

found this comment about wells on page 3 of the thread and thought it was funny. man how time flies....

That is ironic since Delbert is a LB at Cincy...
